Moon lays a wreath at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir Memorial
As his first schedule of visiting the US from 28 June to 3 July, President Moon laid a wreath at the memorial commemorating the Battle of Chosin Reservoir at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Washington, D.C. The battle is recorded as one of the most difficult battles in the US ware history and the memorial serves as an important symbol of the Korea-US Alliance.

Moon was received by Robert Neller, Commander of Marine Corps, and Robert Blackman, Chief Director of the Heritage Foundation and said “I made haste to be here as soon as I landed.”

General Neller said “I’m honored and it is honorable that you visit this memorial where the histories of the US Marine Corps and their families remain.”

Moon said to Colonel Ferguson, grandson of General Almond who helped ‘Hungnam evacuation’, “Hungnam evacuation was possible thanks to your grandfather and I am here today as a result” and added to Ned Forney, grandson of Colonel Forney, who saved many lives during the evacuation “I would like to show my gratitude to your grandfather. 91,000 people saved their lives and my parents were among those refugees.”

The 40 minute planned visit to the memorial passed well over an hour and Moon shared stories with the war veterans and members of the bereaved families.

Moon talks with economic delegation over a tea
Moon had a talk with the Korean economic delegation over a tea on 28 June at Washington D.C. Moon showed his gratitude for their accompaniment and their effort in pioneering markets, expansion of investment and job creation.

Moon emphasized on job and innovation-centered growth to solve low growth, low birth rate and economic gap and asked them a transparent and win-win management. On the talk, Kim Ju-young, the leader of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions also attended.

The meeting hall was arranged according to each section: automobile, aviation, energy, environment, electronics and IT. Moon moved around the five round tables and exchanged opinions with industry officials of large, middle, small, venture and female-owned businesses.

Moon receives Celina Jaitley
President Moon received Celina Jaitley, the Indian Minister of Finance, at the Blue House on 15 June. Moon greeted Jaitley with saying “I would like to show my gratitude to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi who tweeted me his congratulatory message with follow up phone call and letter afterwards. Talking over the phone especially was an opportunity to reaffirm the cooperation between the two countries in building friendship and trust.”

Moon continued “I would like to praise the leadership of Mr. Modi and the ministers’ ability to implement the reform that has drawn the surprising 7% economic growth and India is rapidly getting into a global economic power as a result. And Korea will take part in this remarkable economic growth as a partner country. I also hope that the two countries will deepen our special strategic partnership in years to come.”

Jaitley in response said “Thanks for your warm welcome and I would like to congratulate your inauguration. Mr. Modi wished me to deliver his special thanks for sending an envoy to India. There are about 400 Korean companies operating in India with strong presence in the market at the moment. To support these Korean businesses, the Indian government launched The Korea Plus and also raised the number of flights to Korea. But the reason Mr. Modi sent me to Korea is more about widening the cooperation scope in the area of national defense. India has a will to open this area and hopes active participation of Korean companies. India has been supporting Korea’s denuclearization policy and will keep standing alongside it. Mr. Modi is positive that Moon’s creative approach to the North nuclear issue will surely make contributions to bringing peace in the region and he sincerely wishes you a success for it. Meanwhile, Mr. Modi is looking forward to meeting you at G20 next month and also to greeting you in India near future.”

Moon appoints head of government policy coordination and vice ministers
President Moon appointed a new head of government policy coordination and 27 vice ministers at the Blue House on 15 June. In his congratulatory speech, Moon said “I congratulate you all and ask you to do your best since many of the minister’s positions have not been filled yet. Of course you will lead your department with professionalism after the appointment of the ministers and you are the driving force of running the country as a whole. The reason I give letter of appointment to you but not by the ministers or the prime minister is because I would like to make sure that the Korean people do not need to worry about the administrative vacuum as great vice ministers like you are here today to start the work. I never considered about your background or personal connection but only about your reputation, trustworthiness and record of your previous performance in appointing you to each position. In other words, I and my chief secretaries also do not know about you.”

Moon added “We are in the same boat. Your performance is directly affecting the performance of the Moon Administration and the Moon Administration’s success is your success. This new administration is built by the people who stood with candles in their hands at Gwanghwamun Plaza. So it is now at your hands whether we can fulfill the people’s wish of making ‘A Country Like A County’.”
