지난 2016년을 자신의 커스텀 주얼리 브랜드 ‘엘바문’ 탄생에 오롯이 바친 아티스트 ‘엘바’ 문미희 작가는 2017년을 ‘공존’을 위한 해로 만들기 위해 구슬땀을 흘리고 있다. 그동안 시기별로 일월도 시리즈를 비롯한 아름다운 복록기원의 그림과 독창적인 앤티크 주얼리를 번갈아 제작했다면, 올해는 그림과 주얼리 모두를 위한 작품전과 영감을 얻기 위한 여행, 다정한 동료들과의 소중한 시간으로 가득 채우기 위해서다. 매혹적인 작품세계만큼이나 더욱 성숙한 면모로 팬들에게 다가설 ‘엘바’ 문 작가가 꼼꼼하게 짜 놓은 올해 후반기 계획을 정리해 본다. 

고전과 현대 추상의 오색 창연한 랑데부, 입체적으로 빛나는 일월도와 십장생
19세기 영국의 미술가 윌리엄 모리스는 사진, 복제그림으로 위기를 맞은 순수 미술의 시대에 캔버스가 아닌 다른 소재에 채색하거나 미술용 물감이 아닌 안료로 채색하고, 방을 장식하는 다른 앤티크 물건과 몸을 장식하는 장신구까지 진출해 예술의 생활화, 앤티크 미술의 새로운 문을 열었다. 일률적인 예술로부터 숨통을 틔우길 원했던 위대한 예술가의 흔적이 21세기 한국 최초로 화가와 앤티크 커스텀 주얼리 아티스트를 겸하는 ‘엘바’ 문미희 작가의 예술혼을 빌려 다시 나타났다. 한때 ‘소설(흰눈)’이라는 호를 사용하며 베이징올림픽기념 중국 심양아트페어의 대상을 수상하고 뉴욕 갤러리에 진출해 금빛 찬란한 화폭의 아름다움을 세계에 전하던 문 작가는 동양의 정서와 독실한 종교관, 그리고 가족과 동료들을 향한 깊은 축복과 사랑의 메시지를 ‘일월도’, ‘십장생’ 시리즈에 담으며 자신의 역량을 아낌없이 쏟게 된다. 모델 활동, 영화연기, 패션디자인을 거쳐 온 다재다능한 문 작가는 2000년 초부터 서양화를 그리기 시작했고, 원과 구를 기반으로 한 세계관을 오색찬란한 화폭에 담기 시작한다. 시트린 빛의 선명한 노란 톤, 노랑에서 에메랄드를 거쳐 모스그린으로, 그리고 아쿠아 블루의 선명함으로, 원색에 기반을 둔 강렬함을 사랑하는 문 작가는 이러한 색들을 사랑, 행복, 행운을 기원하는 메시지로 표현하기 위해 동양의 일월도를 연구했다. 여백이 있는 수묵화를 닮았으며 자연으로부터 출발한 고즈넉한 공간조차 우주의 창대함을 담도록 압축한 가운데, 문 작가는 그 사이를 뛰노는 신성한 존재인 십장생들로 시선을 사로잡는다. 문 작가의 그림들은 윤곽선이 있는 민화를 닮았으며, 불규칙한 표면에 그려 마치 판화나 부조의 색다른 질감을 보여주는 데 집중하는 것 같지만, 더 깊이 들어가 보면 파격이라는 터널을 지나 정통성을 띤 품격으로 귀결되어 이 시대의 고전이 지녀야 할 미덕을 비범하게 보여주고 있다. 일반적인 오봉의 채색을 벗어난 분홍빛 산과 대조될 정도로 짙푸른 나무, 한날한시에 공존하는 해와 달, 그리고 불타오르듯 붉은 소나무, 희고 푸른 폭포로 둘러싸인 사계의 자연물들은 일월도의 상징을 파격적이되 자연히 따르고 있어서 본래 물성에서 유래되지 않은 금박 채색은 그림의 가치를 더욱 빛나게 한다.

고통을 행복으로 승화한 진주, 그 진주보다 아름다운 커스텀으로 완성된 ‘엘바문’
문 작가의 그림이 개인전을 비롯해 큰 화제를 모으며 세계의 아트페어까지 진출해 미술관의 무대를 화려하게 누볐다면, 지인으로부터 선물 받은 원석과 진주로 만들기 시작한 커스텀 주얼리 ‘엘바문’은 이와 반대로 주변 인물들의 찬사에 용기를 얻은 문 작가가 더 넓은 영역의 종합예술가가 되는 계기를 만들어주었다. 그림에 에너지를 담고 보는 이에게 행복을 주기를 바라는 문 작가는 주얼리에도 그러한 염원을 담았다. 주얼리 회사의 대량생산 시스템 대신, 오직 하나를 위한 공방 스타일로 제작되어 개인적인 착용 후 사용감을 개선해 실용성까지 덧붙인 지 20여 년, 이제는 전문가 수준의 퀄리티에 도달한 주얼리들을 약 300여 점이나 완성한 문 작가는 또 하나의 자식들 같은 이 주얼리들에 ‘엘바문’이라는 이름을 붙이고 매니아 중심으로 커스텀을 하기 시작한다. 비취와 산호에서 시작되어 금과 은, 다이아몬드 같은 보석과 준보석류, 진주에 이르기까지, 처음에는 디자인에 만족했으나 점차 세공까지 마스터하게 된 문 작가는 의뢰인이 요청하는 원가에 맞추어 커스텀을 하는 경우도 있으며, 이는 타협보다는 예술가와 사용자간의 원활한 소통에 가깝다고 덧붙인다. 
앤티크의 가치는 제작비용보다 그 안에 깃든 영혼이 결정하기 때문이다. 또한 그림을 그리고 전시하는 기쁨 사이에, 보석을 세공하여 직접 착용하는 즐거움은 그림 작업을 끝낸 후 휴식기간 동안 공구를 잡고 주얼리를 제작하는 원동력이 되었다고 한다. 원의 동심원과 거미줄처럼 반복되는 패턴, 신비로운 엑조틱함, 기하학적인 무늬를 응용한 엘바문 귀걸이, 목걸이, 팔찌, 브로치 작품들에 대해 문 작가는 우선 전시 위주로 다가가길 바라고 있다. 그래서 문 작가는 행운의 상징인 금수정 팔찌, 가족을 위한 엄지 반지, 아이들의 성공을 기원하는 새끼 반지를 언제나 착용하고 지낸다. 자신의 작품을 직접 착용함으로써 문 작가는 윌리엄 모리스가 주창한 대로 ‘공장식이 아닌, 커스텀 생활용품의 예술화’를 21세기 한국에서 대단히 매혹적으로 재현하고 있는 셈이다. 

해외 전시와 재충전 병행 계획 세우는 중, 올 한해 더 많은 팬들 만날 준비 마쳐
유명 평론가이자 클로드 모네의 평전을 쓴 구스타프 조프루아(Gustave Geoffroy)가 말했듯이, 무릇 예술가란 속해 있는 공간에 대한 취향과 성격, 내면세계를 작품 뿐 아니라 궁극에는 창작자 자신의 성품에까지 반영시키는 열린 존재이다. 우주의 신비, 행운의 상징인 네잎클로버, 일월도 소재의 그림과 ‘엘바문’ 주얼리를 꾸준히 제작하는 문 작가는 내성적으로 틀어박혀 작품을 하던 시절과 달리, 지금은 작품 활동만큼이나 취미인 여행으로 시작된 세상 구경과 인간관계에 적극적으로 변해갔다고 밝혔다. 작품 활동은 감성만큼이나 체력을 많이 소모하는 일이지만, 문 작가는 휴식을 병행하며 장기적으로 해내고 싶을 뿐 아니라 누군가에게 예술적으로 좋은 영향을 주고 언젠가는 판매 수익을 모아 후배들을 키우는 역할도 하길 바란다고 덧붙인다. 12년 째 성공적으로 운영 중인 국민대 행정대학원 CEO과정인 해공지도자과정을 거치며 국내 유명 정재계·예술인들과 돈독한 우정으로 총동문회의 명예회장을 역임하고, 젊은 시절부터 사회로부터 받은 사랑을 환원하고자 청담로타리클럽 회장으로서 활발한 봉사활동을 해 온 문 작가에게는 발이 넓어진 만큼 독창적이고 아름다운 작품들을 어서 소개하자고 전시회를 제안하는 이들이 유독 많기 때문이다. 이러한 열화와 같은 성원에 힘입어, 이르면 올해 하반기 해외 아트페어 참가, 12월 경 개인전, 내년 초에 그림과 주얼리를 함께 소개하는 아트전을 계획 중인 문 작가는 바쁜 시간을 쪼개 여행으로 감성을 재충전하겠다는 열정도 보이고 있다. 문 작가는 예술가로서, 인간으로서, 아내이자 엄마로서, 누군가의 동료로서 살아가는 모든 삶에 충실하겠다고 한다. 복록과 장수를 기원하는 그림을 그리고 수호신처럼 사랑하는 사람을 지키기 위해 아름다운 세공을 계속했던 문 작가를 아끼는 사람이 많은 것은, 아마도 그런 열정에서 비롯된 에너지가 주변의 사람들을 계속 끌어당기기 때문이 아닐까. 엄마의 예술성을 이어받아 해외에서 색채공학 박사학위를 딴 딸을 만나고자 해외방문을 겸한 여행으로 작품의 아이디어를 얻고, 커스텀 주얼리 제작 재료를 공수하며 재충전을 하던 추억을 말하는 문 작가는 올해 작품 전시를 통해서 팬들을 다시 한 번 기쁘게 할 자신이 있다고 거듭 강조했다. 큰 벽과 캔버스가 필요한 그림, 몸에 걸칠 수 있고 휴대하기 편한 주얼리. 예술과 봉사만큼 그림과 주얼리 중에서 어느 하나도 포기할 수 없다고 힘주어 말하는 문 작가는, 다가오는 개인전을 충실히 치르고 해외 아트페어에서 시야를 넓히며 더 깊이 있는 작품을 만들게 될 자신의 미래를 기대하고 있다.

Five color bluish rendezvous of classic and modernism, three dimensionally shining irwoldo and sipjangsaeng
The pure art in the 19th century Britain suffered from the advent of photos and reproductions of paintings. Considering the trend in the era, it was not surprising that a British textile designer William Morris pioneered ‘life art’ by using different materials instead of canvas, pigments instead of paints and other antiques and accessories. And this innovation of Morris is being revived by a Korean artist in the 21st century: Elva Moon.

Moon is known as Korea’s first artist antique jewelry designer. She won the grand prize at the Shenyang Art Fair celebrating the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics and had an exhibition in New York. She expressed her message of orientalism, religious fervor and love and bless towards her family and colleagues in her works ‘irwoldo’ – sun and moon - and ‘sipjangsaeng’ – the ten traditional symbols of longevity -. 

Moon is a versatile artist who once led a career as a model, actor and fashion designer. It was 2000 that she started to draw Western paintings based on circles and spheres with colors from yellow and emerald to moss-green and aqua blue. She sees these colors as messages of love, happiness and luck which are well presented in her work ‘irwoldo’.

Moon’s works might sometimes look like wash drawings and the ten traditional symbols of longevity catches the eyes of viewers. The contours also might seem Korean folk paintings but they are expertly executed with the virtue of classical paintings. 

The deep blue trees, co-existence of the sun and the moon in a day, the reddish pine tree and the four seasonal objects surrounded by the white and bluish fall are the symbols of ‘irwoldo’ and its gilt color makes the value of the painting transcendental.  

Pearls sublimate pain in happiness and Elva completes their beauty
If Moon’s art works have drawn a great attention from exhibitions and art fairs home and abroad, her jewelry brand Elva Moon has brought her the title ‘a total artist’. Moon started making jewels by using gemstones and pearls she received as gifts from her acquaintances and about 300 handmade jewels of gold, silver, diamond and pearls, accomplished for the last 20 years, are boasting today the top quality and design as well as practicality and comfortable feel.  

From earrings and necklaces to bracelets and broaches, Moon’s mastery hand works are well melted into each work to give uniqueness to the wearer. The excellence of Moon’s jewelries attracted people’s attention and it even led to customized design services which she willingly provides her expertise at a reasonable cost because she takes her jewelry making more like a means of communication.

She always wears a gold crystal bracelet symbolizing luck, thump ring symbolizing happiness of family and little finger ring symbolizing a success. The meaning of wearing the jewels made herself is an action of implementing the ‘life art’ of William Morris in the 21st century. 

Recharge and preparing overseas exhibitions
For Moon, taking a rest every now and then is as important as pouring her passion into creating art works. And this is the reason that she travels on a regular basis to rest her mind and to see the world. Traveling also, she says, can be a source of her energy to carry on her physically demanding jewelry making as long as she can.  

Moon passed the Haegong Leadership Course of Kookmin University Graduate School of Public Administration and served as an honorary chairwoman of the alumni. She also served as the president of Rotary Korea Cheongdam and actively engaged in volunteer activities through which many people suggested exhibition opportunities to her.

Currently, she is planning to participate in an overseas art fair late this year, to hold a solo exhibition in December and to hold another exhibition that will display her paintings and jewelries early next year. Moon says that she is confident with her works and to satisfy the visitors of her exhibitions. 

Moon is a woman who wishes to lead a successful life as an artist, a wife and a mother. This desire seems to draw sympathies from many fellow human beings as most of them also wish to lead their life as successful as that. Like mother like dauther, Moon’s daughter studied abroad and obtained a PhD in color engineering. And Moon often talks of those times when she visited her daughter and found some inspiration for her next works.
