President Moon starts his international diplomacy
Moon-Trump Summit
President Moon arrived at the White House on 29 June local time and was led to State Dining Room and exchanged a light talk with Trump for 10 minutes in standing before seated.
Moon said “I congratulate you for the economic performance you have achieved since your inauguration. Korea also sees a new hope from the result. Korea, as a liberated country, is the sole country which accomplished economic growth and democracy at the same time after the Second World War. And the US is the country which planted the seed of capitalism on the Korean soil. Korea’s success, therefore, will be a pride of the US.”
Moon also said at a meeting with Washington correspondents at Blair House “It is a great result that both Mr. Trump and I came to a conclusion that we remain to open a dialogue channel and solve the North’s nuclear issues peacefully. In order to settle down the issues, Korea, the US and Japan must work together with China and Russia based on the ‘Northeast Multilateral Security System’.
Moon attends Korea-US Business Summit
President Moon attended the Korea-US Business Summit held by Korea-American Chamber of Commerce at Washington D.C on 28 June. In his keynote address, Moon said that the reason he visited the US first after his inauguration was to reconfirm the importance of the Korea-US Alliance and the economic partnership.
250 entrepreneurs of both countries, including JP Morgan and GE, attended the summit and Moon introduced job creation, fair competition and innovative growth which are the three economic policy direction of the new administration.
Moon also said that he hoped the current economic cooperation between the two countries would develop into a strategic partnership so that Korea and the US work together to pioneer global market over the expansion of trade and investment. Moon then asked companies of both countries to take part.
Moon attends AIIB meeting
President Moon attended the 2nd Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank held at Jeju on 16 June. It was held for the first time outside of China and was the first international event for Moon to attend after his inauguration. 1,500 businessmen from 73 member countries of AIIB attended the meeting this year. In his congratulatory speech, Moon emphasized the importance of politics and economy in Asia and resolved to grow together through solidarity and cooperation. He mentioned the Korea’s infrastructure investment that propelled economic and social development and said that he would share Korea’s experience and capability with developing countries in Asia.
He continued “Asia takes 60% of the whole population of the world and more than 1/3 GDP. It’s the largest single market and an important manufacturing powerhouse. It has a huge growth potential to lead the global market. Alongside economic merits, political stability and advancement of democracy of Asian countries can affect the world peace and security. Asia is the place where human civilizations were originated for which they have travelled across the vast lands of earth and created a variety of cultures through time. The accumulated histories of Asian countries are becoming an inspirational report for all human beings on earth in the 21st century.”
Before the meeting commenced, Moon received Jin Richin, the president of AIIB, and greeted him with “I see a rapid increase in number of AIIB member countries and I’d like to ascribe it to the leadership of the Chinese government and you. The meeting this year is really meaningful for me as it’s the first international meeting I attend.”
Jin greeted back “I’m glad that AIIB meeting is held outside of China this year. I’m really impressed by Jeju’s beautiful landscape and the perfect preparation for the meeting. As Korea is a member of AIIB in won currency, I have to say that AIIB also is a Korea’s bank. There are number of Korean people in high positions at the moment and I’d like to see more of them in AIIB through open recruitment. I hope many Korean companies will involve various infrastructure projects in Asia.
Moon receives Belgian princess
President Moon received Princess Astrid of Belgium who visited the Blue House with an economic mission of 250 personnel on 13 June. Princess Astrid congratulated the inauguration of Moon and wished him a success during his term. She mentioned similarities between Belgium and S. Korea and pointed out Korea’s capabilities in transport, infrastructure, service, export-oriented economy and highly skilled labor as the reason of her visit.
Moon echoed her saying and emphasized on ever strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries since tying the diplomatic relations in 1901. Moon mentioned about the June 25 and showed his gratitude that Belgium fought alongside S. Korea during the Korean War. He said that there was an increase in the volume of trade between the two countries after Korea-Belgium FTA and hoped to keep making progress especially in chemicals, medicine and ICT.
Moon added “We need dialogue as well as sanctions and pressure on North Korea. I heard that Belgium played an important role in the initial stage of the EU and that experience will be a good lesson for us. This was the reason I sent an envoy to the EU as soon as I took the Blue House in the first place. I also came to know that you are an honorary committee member of Paralympic Games so I hope you pay a visit to PyeongChang 2018 and PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Games next February.”
Moon receives Nikai
President Moon received Nikai, an envoy of Japan, at the Blue House on 12 June. Nikai delivered a letter of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe to Moon who read the letter with meticulous attention. Moon said to the envoy “Please send Mr. Abe my gratitude for the letter. Mr. Abe mentioned on denuclearization of the North which I agree as it is must necessary for the survival of Korea and for peace in North East Asia and in the world. I also agree with the stronger pressure and sanctions Mr. Abe mentioned on the letter. Yet I would like to add the need of dialogue alongside pressure and sanctions in order to draw a complete disposal of nuclear weapons.”
Moon continued “I feel regretful to say that majority of Korean people do not accept the comfort women agreement signed with the former government. Above all, the comfort women still alive themselves do not accept the agreement. Both S. Korea and Japan, therefore, must face the matter squarely that we need more time to settle down the issue. The conflict over history between the two countries has long been a sticking point and I do not think we can find solutions in a short period of time. And there is a need for Japan to understand the common sentiment of the Korean people and we can draw good results in relationship by working together.”
Nikai answered “I agree with you and let us try hard. The Liberal Democratic Party has majority of the seats at the moment and we will exert our effort to reflect what we have talked today.”
