Only one of its kind in Korea – a succession to ‘Chu-Sa’ Style
Choi Young-hwan, president of Korea Chu-sa Calligraphy Association

Bulgyegongchool (meaning not discriminating good or poor work) is the phrase used by Chu-sa Kim Jung-hee, who is acknowledged as the best calligrapher in the late Josun dynasty, for stamp on the head of his work. His calligraphy, officially called Chu-sa Style, is characterized by the stroke fat and slim, barren and rich, rugged and grotesque, and known as a rule outside the rule.

A global master of Chu-Sa Style inherits the legacy of traditional style.

As many people know, ‘Chinse character’ comes from China and calligraphic tradition originated in China, too. Famous Chinese calligraphers such as Yang Hee-ja, Goo Yang-soo and Cho Maeng-bu established their own calligraphy influencing our country. However, our ancestors tried their own individuality and spirit even when following their calligraphy, and Kim Jung-hee’s Chu-Sa Style is considered its acme and supreme example.
Talking about Korean calligraphy is fundamentally impossible without Chu-Sa Style. It is our own calligraphy because the handwriting contains picturesque formulation, calligraphic formalities and primordial ecstasy. Especially, its exceptional beauty and originality was exported back to the Chinese world of calligraphy making a big repercussion. Choi Young-hwan (Gasan), president of Korea Chu-Sa Calligraphy Association is known as the person who, after a long study, unusual passion and endless self-reflection and efforts, is considered to inherit the legacy of Chu-Sa Style in our time. He is counted as the calligrapher who contains the individuality of Chu-Sa Style best with his robust and free-swinging strokes of the brush and who has enjoyed fame at home and abroad, President Choi said, “Chu-Sa is an unparalleled calligrapher from Korea and a great scholar and artist in many spheres. And it is my role and duty to deliver his brilliant achievements and spirits to descendants for their moral and lesson.” Accordingly, for the past 30 years he has tried to publicize the excellence of Chu-Sa Style touring the nation including Donghak-sa Buddhist College, Seoul (Korea) Chu-Sa Style Study Meeting, Busan (Korea) Chu-Sa Style Calligraphers Association, Gwacheon Cultural Center. etc. in an effort to rear junior scholars.
President Choi, who held four times of private exhibition starting with his first in 1967, showed excellent epigraphy in the monumental forest of China’s Sangok, Seowangmowan, Shinmook, Korea’s calligraphy, 50 works of hanging board in Mt. Bomun’s Sammun-sa, believers’ tombstones, Buddhist temple’s signboard, etc. In 1996 time capsule event, which commemorated 600th founding anniversary of capital Seoul, his family precepts written in Chu-Sa Style was collected in Mt. Nam’s Folk Village and is going to be exhibited in the 1000th year of founding capital. Taking the lead in promoting the beauty and excellence of Chu-Sa Style through exhibitions overseas in the US, China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, he won many awards including Korea’s social education and culture, the World’s peace, art and culture, Korea’s pictorial art, calligraphy and culture, Asia’s art achievements and Japan’s culture and art achievements.

“Will take the lead in the inheritance and development of traditional calligraphic culture.”

President Choi Young-hwan served as a judge in the national calligraphy contest in commemoration of Chu-Sa, Korea Chu-Sa Calligraphy Exhibition, Japan’s International Calligraphic Contest and Korea pictorial calligraphers Association’s Exhibition. Currently, he is an advisor in Korea Chu-Sa Style Study Group, Korea Pictorial Calligraphers Association, Gapja Calligraphy Association, and president of Chu-Sa Pictorial art and calligraphy Academy, vice president of Korea/Japan/China Calligraphic Culture Exchange Association, director of Korea’s Calligraphy and Literati Paintings and Chu-Sa Commemoration Project, president of Korea Chu-Sa Calligraphy Association and Korea Calligraphy Monumental Forest Association. In 2005, Korea Chu-Sa Calligraphy Association signed an agreement with China’s Heilongjiang Daqing Calligraphers Association and has since continued regular mutual visits and held pictorial art and calligraphy exhibitions. In 2012, marking the 20’s anniversary of Korea-China normal relationship, his association held a joint Calligraphic Exchange Exhibition with Harbin Calligraphers Association in Seoul Art gallery at Insa-dong. Especially, succeeding to Korea Chu-Sa Calligraphic Association founded by his father (Yeonpa) and master Choi Jeong-soo, president Choi has made efforts to spread the Chu-Sa Style through regular membership exhibition each year, bestowing ‘Yeonpa Arts Patronage Award’ to honor Yeonpa’s achievements. In March last year, he built ‘Yeonpa’s Memorial’ under the grave at Jewon-myeon, Geumsan-gun, Chungnam marking the 16th anniversary of his decease.
In the meantime, president Choi Yeong-hwan is holding a talent event such as ‘Writing family precepts and motto’ for citizens and youths under the auspice of Daejon city and Education Office. He clarified, “As a researcher of Chu-Sa Style, I hope this field of study will expand in the future with many leaders cultivated. I am planning to build a memorial hall filled with Chu-sa related materials for permanent exhibition in order that more people may succeed to the will and spirit of Chu-Sa and generate fine Chu-Sa Style works in the proper climate.” His passion will persist in his endeavor to kindle our calligraphic culture standing in the world.
