Education that students become a subject suggests a new way of university
Professor Shin, Myung-Hee of Talmage Liberal Arts College of Hannam University

The emphasis on how the  university education system should be changed has been the subject of controversy for some years. It has been  pointed-out that  the university syster has lost the essence of itself due to its simple lecture education system and the public perception of it as a method for students to obtain qualifications for obtaining employment. However, before any changes can be made, it is essential that the student be the primary focus.. When students can think critically, t they can be leaders of the future.
Last March 31st, professor Shin Myung-Hee of the Talmage Liberal Arts College of Hannam University obtained an award of excellence at the  ‘Competition of University Teaching Method and Learning Program’ hosted by the Korea University Education Association. The purpose of the competition is to share professors’ educational contents experiences at the university and find  ways to improve the quality of high level education. In this event, professor Shin gained some high praise for her teaching method called “Lecture Room with Communication and Communion”.
Professor Shin points out that “The purpose of the teaching system in the past was simply to deliver knowledge and there was no effective communication between professors and students whatsoever. It was difficult for professors to know if their teaching method was working well, and  therefore the learning was innefficient..” To combat this problem she inctroduced the ‘Flipped Learning’ concept to her lectures. This program is now being used in universities across Korea.
After showing a 15-minute video on pre-determined concepts in advance to students, professors give students an opportunity to research that concept outside of class time. In the actual lecture, there is a discussion or presentation about that concept. Aftewards there is a discussion so that students to can process the concepts more fully and professors present core themes.. Later, there is another discussion following between professors and students or between students themselves in order to share ideas and feedback.
Here, the main focus was on expanding students’ roles in the class and fostering a sense of collaboration. Professor Shin explained, “Companies are looking for people who have both ability and personality. Having and maintaining social relationships with colleagues and creating synergy out of cooperation are just as important as individual ability. The best way for students to develop their social skills is to have them  join discussions and prepare team presentations together.  Students who have different opinions and characters try to achieve common goals and in the process, learn how to understand each other and make decisions that are in the best interests of the group. My direction of teaching is to let them do their own work and be responsible for their own development.”
Actually, students who take her class feel that such an approach is supporting their learning, so the results have been positive. Their contribution and passion for the class are always at high levels.

“Hope this society gives a chance for people who are trying”

Professor Shin emphasize that the key point of college English education is to know the exact goal. She expressed her sympathy for university students:  “It is not the same asstudying grammar and vocabulary in middle school and high school period. In university, they need to  learn how to show their abilities and strengthen them within the context of English learning. However, they tend to give up easily because of negative previous experiences and a passive attitude towards English.”

Professor Shin also spoke about the need for universities to to evaluate students as inviduals, assessing ability and personalityinstead of analyzing students and professors with a conventional standard.

Also, Professor Shin revealed her hope that the the ways in which society views students and universities are moving in a positive direction: “Even though people are intelligent and have a good personality, there is no such thing as a company who treats their employees as anything more than just workers.

Even now Professor Shin wants Korea’s English education system to try her approach. She prides herself on her teaching method since it is a good way to show the mast is doing well. (I don’t understand that last phrase).
