김해시배드민턴협회는 지난 2016년 8월 통합출범 이후 생활체육으로서의 배드민턴 저변확대와 전문체육 배드민턴의 초석을 다지는 데 혼신의 힘을 다해왔다. 53개의 클럽과 3,000여 명의 동호인으로 구성된 협회는 보다 다양한 생활체육 프로그램을 개발·보급함으로써 김해시민들의 건전한 여가선용과 체력증진에 보탬이 되고자 노력하고 있다.

생활체육·엘리트체육으로서의 배드민턴 저변 확대 추진
지난 2016년 9월 취임 이후 지금까지 김해시배드민턴협회를 이끌어오고 있는 이상종 회장은 경남 제2의 도시인 김해시의 위상에 걸맞은 인프라를 구축하고자 앞장서고 있다. 먼저 현재 운영되고 있는 장유신안초등학교 배드민턴부에 이어 중·고등학교 엘리트 선수 육성을 위한 팀 창단에 매진하고 있다. 그는 “현재의 시스템에서는 초등학교에서 육성된 우수한 선수들이 타 시·군으로 유출될 수밖에 없는 한계를 가지고 있습니다. 이에 저희는 각 학교 측과의 긴밀한 협의를 통해 김해시 관내에서도 전문적으로 중·고등 엘리트 선수를 육성할 수 있는 기반을 마련하고자 사업을 추진하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다. 또한 협회에서는 김해시 내 19개 동지역에 분포되어 활동하고 있는 배드민턴 동호인들이 지역적 편차 없이 배드민턴을 즐길 수 있도록 시설 확충과 보수, 애로사항 해결 등에도 심혈을 기울이고 있다.
이러한 노력의 결과는 각종 대회에서의 우수한 성적으로 증명되고 있다. 지난해 10월 ‘경상남도생활체육대축전’에서 종합준우승의 쾌거를 달성한 협회는 지난 5월에 있었던 ‘경남도민체전’에서도 56년 만의 배드민턴 종목 종합우승이라는 성적을 거둔 바 있다. 또한 협회는 서귀포배드민턴협회와의 자매결연을 통해 매년 교류전을 진행하고 있으며, 올해 전라북도 무주군배드민턴협회와의 결연을 추진하며 올 하반기 스포츠교류전을 시행할 계획이기도 하다. 

“김해시 배드민턴의 건강한 발전을 이루겠습니다”
이상종 회장은 시민들의 건강과 복지 향상, 그리고 생활체육의 활성화를 위해선 김해시의 지원과 관심이 필요하다고 강조했다. 그는 “현재 동호인 활동의 대부분은 관내 학교 체육관을 임대하는 방식으로 운영되고 있으며, 임대료로 지출되는 비용은 연간 600~1,000만 원에 이르고 있습니다”라며, “생활체육 활성화를 위해선 동호인들의 부담을 줄일 수 있는 제도 개선과 지원책이 필요합니다. 김해시와 교육청의 긴밀한 협조를 통해 ‘생활체육 체육관 임대 관련 조례’를 제정하며 임대료를 인하할 수 있는 방안을 모색해주셨으면 합니다”라고 당부했다. 또한 그는 가까운 밀양시, 창원시에 이미 건립된 전용체육관이 전국대회 유치 및 동호인 활성화에 기여하고 있다는 점을 지적하며 53만 인구의 김해시 규모에 걸맞은 배드민턴전용체육관의 필요성을 역설했다. 
이 회장은 “취임 후 여러 난관과 숙제들이 많았지만, 협회 임원들과 동호인 여러분들의 협조와 성원 속에 하나씩 성과를 일궈내고 있습니다. 다만 클럽수와 동호인 수가 많다보니 개개인 회원 분들의 고충을 모두 다 충족시켜드리기엔 부족함이 있었던 것이 사실입니다. 앞으로는 더욱 배드민턴 동호인들의 화합과 건강증진을 최우선으로 생각하며, 김해시 배드민턴이 더욱 높은 곳으로 나아갈 수 있도록 최선의 노력을 아끼지 않겠습니다”라고 밝혔다. 사계절 언제나 즐길 수 있는 즐거운 스포츠로서, 건강증진과 스트레스 해소에 도움을 주는 건강한 스포츠로서, 그리고 가족과 이웃, 모든 세대와 직업군이 어우러져 하나 되는 스포츠로서의 김해시 배드민턴 발전에 앞장서고 있는 이상종 회장과 김해시배드민턴협회의 행보를 주목해보자.

“Badminton is the sport for all age groups to enjoy”

Effort to launch middle and high school badminton teams
Taking the office of the Gimhae Badminton Association as the new president on September 2016, Lee Sang-jeong is exerting effort in launching middle and high school badminton teams to back up the association’s rather lonely one elementary school team: Jangyu Elementary School. “There is high possibility that the students move to teams outside the city as there isn’t any middle and high school teams in the city. That’s why I pay much attention to the issue with grave concern” says Lee. He also is working on improving and expanding the badminton facilities in the city that can accommodate the local clubs in 19 areas of the city. Despite this relatively poor environment than other cities, the association has drawn fruitful results at a number of competitions. At the ‘Gyeongsangnamdo Sport for All Festival’ held last October, the Gimhae Badminton Association won the overall competition and the same result at the Gyeongsangnamdo Sports Festival held last May. Also, the association signed a sisterhood with the Seogwipo Badminton Association to hold the exchange competition on a yearly basis and this year plans to sign another one with the Muju Badminton Association. Meanwhile, recognizing the need of sponsorship from the badminton industry, Lee secured sponsorship from badminton equipment makers and the equipment is used for training elementary students at the moment.  

Promoting badminton as Sport for All
“Currently, the members of the Gimhae Badminton Association are borrowing gymnasiums of schools in the city by paying the rental fee to play the games. So the yearly rental cost is about 6 million won to 10 million won ($8,944). This means that we urgently need support from the city as the activation of the badminton is closely related to promotion of Sport for All. So the association has asked the city to bring up a related ordinance such as ‘Sport for All Gymnasium Rental Ordinance (Tentative)’ and also to build a large city badminton court” said Lee. He added “The association has grown much through years and it embraces many clubs and their members. Though we’ve solved a number of issues but it was not enough to catch and reflect opinions of the most members. So we are working hard to find more effective way to listen and to bring solutions that can satisfy as many members of the association as possible and we will do our best for it.” <Power Korea> hopes that the Gimhae Badminton Association will take a great part in promoting badminton as Sport for All.
