Moon’s four strong men

The Prime Minister nominee Lee Nak-yeon
A journalist turned politician Lee Nak-yeon served as a 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th member of the National Assembly and recently resigned from his Geonnam provincial governor’s position on President Moon’s nominating him as the new Prime Minister on May 10. He worked as a political journalist at The Donga Ilbo, was encouraged his political career by the former deceased president Kim Dae-jung. He was also known as an expert at the Japanese affairs for he worked as a correspondent in Tokyo and served as the secretary general and the chief vice chairman of the Japan-Korea Parliamentarians' Union. When in the Millennium Democratic Party, he served as the spokesperson, the career which led to the same position at the Roh Moo-hyun’s Participatory Government in 2002. He made the most of his journalist career by writing the Roh’s inaugural address and his work capability also led him to win the Job Creation Awards from the Ministry of Employment and Labor and his ‘100 Won Taxi’ was chosen as the best local government election policy in 2014 when serving as the Geonnam governor. 

Cho Kuk, the new Senior Secretary to the President for Civil Affairs
From a jurist and professor to writer and civic activist, Cho’s career can be summarized in one word: social participatory intellectual. Making the most of the SNS to deliver his message and to communicate with the people, Cho has been standing beside the progressives and is regarded as one of the most respected figures in the civil society. He worked for the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy in early 2000 as the deputy director of its judicial monitoring center and as the vice chairman of the steering committee. In 2007, he served as a member of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea and a member of the 2nd Sentencing Commission of the Supreme Court. When Moon was the leader of the party, he led the innovation of the party as a member of the Kimsanggon Innovation Committee. Moon’s appointment of Cho was received by many as an action to fulfill his firm will to reform the degraded prosecution service and other authorities. 

Im Jong-suk, the new Chief Presidential Secretary
Known as a rational reformer, Im Jong-suk was born in Jangheung County, South Jeolla Province in 1966. He twice served as a lawmaker, and as secretary general of the Minjoo Party and recently the head of the Department of Political Affairs of Seoul City. He has built wide political connections through his career and his role as the new Chief Presidential Secretary this time is highly expected to make the most of his talent in open communication and dialogue between the Blue House and the National Assembly. He also has accumulated his diplomacy career by working for the Foreign Affairs & Unification Committee for 6 years with particular knowledge and experience in the relationship between the South and the North; he initiated Gaesong Industrial Complex Support Act when served as a lawmaker. For this reason, he is also expected to make a great contribution to tackling the international crisis alongside the Senior Secretary to the President for Foreign Affairs and National Security. 

Jo Hyun-ok, the new Senior Secretary to the President for Human Resources
The Moon Administration’s first woman to break the glass ceiling, Jo Hyun-ok was born in Seoul in 1956. She majored in political science and diplomacy at Ewha Womans University and obtained a PhD in politics at Heidelberg University, Germany. She worked with Moon when in the Participatory Government and served as a member of the Human Resources Investigative and Advisory Committee for Senior Government Officials and as the Secretary of the Balanced Human Resources. “Jo is the right person who can realize the balanced human resourcing. She has long time been a women’s movement activist and has a rich administrative experience. We are highly expecting of her balanced and glass breaking selection of talented persons” said the Blue House. It is the first time that woman was appointed as the Senior Secretary to the President for Human Resources and Moon seems to be determined to fulfill his will to balance the male and female ratio of the Blue House within his term.
