Building foundation for plant breeding science
Kim Byeong-dong, Honorary Professor of Department of Plant Science at Seoul National University

Digging out the dormant high value added of Korean plant breeding industry
If seed is often regarded as the semiconductor of agriculture, the plant breeding as the core technology to accelerate related industries from food and life science to perfume and cosmetics. For this reason, the plant science professor Kim Byeong-dong emphasizes on building foundation for plant breeding science. Kim is an authority of molecular genetics and succeeded separating the CS enzyme genes that synthesizes capsaicin. He made the world’s first chili pepper gene bank (back library) and explained about the finding of ‘FBI DNA’ through his book ‘Foldback Intercoil DNA’. Kim says that promoting the basic science is very important from which the applied scientists work together to bring up national level strategies to make a foundation for the development of the Koreanized basic science. Through this, Kim continues, Korea can prepare for future food war and takes the initiative. At the 105th autumn conference held by the Korea Society for Horticultural Science, Kim emphasized on promoting functional seeds that can answer to healthy food, cosmetics and medicine over the common agricultural use under the presentation subject ‘The Present Condition of Korean Breeding Industry and the Direction of Breeding for Globalization’. He also pointed out cultivation of chili peppers according to each kind and purpose; for example, sugar enhanced or capsaicin enhanced chili. In fact, Korea’s chili research is highly strategic and boasts one of the best systems in Asia. However, Kim regrets that many talented overseas researchers, in the US for example, who studied on colon bacillus, yeast, Caenorhabditis elegans or Arabidopsis, are having difficulty in finding basic science research institutes and its application industries in Korea. That is why Kim is constantly emphasizing the importance of securing the foundations.

Development of original technology and support
Kim also regrets that excellent Korean research papers are leaking to overseas academic journals due to the SCI and the impact factor authentication. For the development of domestic academic journals, therefore, Kim suggests to the Moon Administration a self-motivated research and its authentication systems. Breeding industry in particular is regarded as a rising industry in the US, Europe, Japan and China and they already have started their move to enter Asian market. Breeding science embraces biology and genetics and many scientists are expecting that the industry will contribute not only to plant or animal modifications but also to the development of life science. For example, the industry can expand to marine products and edible insects from the common fruits, vegetables, flowers and grains. For this, building cooperation systems is a must. The completion of plant breeding can lead to finding new genes to automation system which makes it possible to grow them with artificial lights in a ‘plant factory’. Another advantage of plant breeding is that it can create new jobs. Meanwhile, Kim once more emphasizes on government support for protecting Korea’s original technologies from leaking to overseas due to lack of regal devices. Launching a special team, for example, might be a good idea according to Kim. “We need to diversify our strategies in both short and long term perspectives in order to secure original technologies and support so that we can respond to the fast changing global environment.” <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
