Bamboo artist Yoo Mi-ran

Artist Yoo Mi-ran is best known for his bamboo paintings. She draws bamboos while skillfully makes presence of ambient objects such as the background and the gaps between. Appreciating the tranquil charm of strolling through the sun-showered bamboo forest has long time been a privilege to only a few urbanized modern people today. Yoo was no exception until she happened to grow bamboos in her house and felt the power of healthy energy. Thus shifted it to the canvas made of thin metal which awaited for something new and refresh. Unlike the silky golden symbolic bamboo in the scrolls collected by wealthy Chinese in the olden times, the thick and intensive colored bamboos of Yoo give a sense of modern vitality. The leaves are shining on the sunbeams passed through the green energy of the sky-high bamboo stems and the vitality is bursting out of each thick and obstinate knuckles and branches. Bamboo symbolized constancy in oriental culture but the folk and connotative meaning forced by the man has gone back to its true self through Yoo's three-dimensional reflection and catching of eternal light. 

From traditional charm to modern sophistication
Yoo borrows names from seasons, time and nature to give them to each work of her bamboo. To be given a name is to be given a new meaning. Yoo's bamboos still the moment and boast their upright beauty and its contents. Yet the execution as an artist is not as easy as it sounds; the thin and delicate work of guilt and the repeated layering require a considerable level of concentration as an unbalance of breath might ruins down the near completed pyramid. Yoo is especially good at making the central part of the big bamboo conspicuous. She pictures the famous bamboo forests in Korea to establish the composition and piles them up with slender brush and wears colors delicately. This modern sophistication has shifted the time of the monotone bamboos commonly appeared on the Korean water and ink paintings to contemporary through new sensitivity and interpretation. The harmony between the tradition and the present is often talked with 'ongogishin (learning from the past for the present)' but Yoo satisfied both ascription of meaning and uniqueness of materials and overcame the inherent limitation by application of ecological characteristics and detailed exterior. Prof. James Nietsch of Malinz College of Arts Germany reviews her work "Yoo uses unique methods and materials instead of those traditional to draw out the inner side of the objects from the meaningless flat of visual art, thus travel outside mainstream."
