입시위주의 교육에서 열린교육이 도입된 이래, AI가 본격적으로 도입되는 4차산업혁명을 앞두고 인성과 윤리, 창의성을 강화한 교육의 변화가 절실한 시점이다. 이러한 상황 속에서 한국 창의교육의 선구자인 (사)우듬지 고중곤 이사장이 주도한 2017 국제교육혁명포럼(IFER)이 성황리에 개최되었다. 이 자리를 통해 아이들이 요구하는 방향으로 행복을 찾아주는 교육을 통해 새 시대를 준비하고자 하는 고 이사장의 교육관과, 그동안 선진국의 교육방식을 수입하던 한국이 새 시대의 개혁적 교육론을 수출하는 나라가 될 가능성을 동시에 엿볼 수 있었다.

교육혁명을 이뤄내 콘텐츠를 수출하는 나라의 일원이 된다는 사명감으로
2017년 4월 22일 성남산업진흥재단에서 개최된 국제교육혁명포럼(IFER)의 조직위원장이자 (사)우듬지 및 우듬지학교의 창립자인 고중곤 이사장은 급변하는 4차산업혁명의 미래를 오래 전 예측하고 창의교육을 고안한 것으로도 유명하다. 1990년대에는 아이의 부모가 자연 속 인성함양의 중요성을 모르고 지나치는 것이 대부분이었다. 20대 시절 루소, 피아제, 몬테소리, 로크, 코메니우스 등 진보적인 교육사상가들의 영향을 받은 고 이사장은 체험중심교육의 중요성을 일찍이 깨달아, 1995년 교실 없는 대안학교를 시작해 2002년 독일의 자연학교 나투어슐레(naturschule)를 한국화한 자연체험학교 겸 한국 최초의 숲 유아대안학교 나투어슐레 우듬지유치원을 설립한다. 고 이사장의 교육방침은 특정 과목 위주의 선행학습 대신, 1921년 영국의 닐 영이 만든 서머힐 학교의 영향을 받아 방종이 아닌 고유한 가치를 지닌 아이들의 자율성을 키워주는 방식이다. ‘우듬지(woodumzi)’라는 의미는 가장 높은 나뭇가지 끝 줄기를 일컫는 순우리말이며, 고 이사장은 1999년, 한국 최초로 우리 실정에 맞도록 한 생태치료학문(에코테라피)을 유아동들에게 소개하기도 했다. 또한 글로벌 시대에 맞춰 그동안 고 이사장이 선진국의 교육법을 한국화한 결과를 개발도상국과 빈곤국에 나눠주고, 행복한 교육의 가치를 드높이고자 하는 단계에 들어갔다. 고 이사장은 ‘우리가 잃어버린 배움의 본질, 살아 숨 쉬는 교육의 시작’을 주제로 학술 포럼인 IFFR에 교육 관계자들을 초청해 의견을 개진하였다. 이 자리에서 발제자로 참석한 한국뉴욕주립대학교 김춘호 총장의 <4차산업혁명시대 교육패러다임의 변화>를 2017년의 중요 이슈로 삼았다는 고 이사장에 따르면, 한국도 21세기에 맞게 교육방침의 다변화가 필요하다고 한다. 한국은 아시아에서도 손꼽히는 교육열 덕분에 교육혁명을 일으키는 종주국으로서의 가능성이 큰 반면, 과도한 경쟁으로 국민행복지수가 OECD가입국 중에서 하위권에 그치고 있다. 한국에서 대안교육이란, ‘아이들이 반드시 행복해지고 자신의 성향과 강점을 찾아내 자발적으로 이끌어낼 수 있는 콘텐츠’가 전제되어야 한다. 그렇게 해야 자기주도학습을 이해하는 창의적인 인재를 길러 AI가 전 세계의 산업화 현장에 등장하는 미래의 인재를 기를 수 있다는 것이다.

2022년 자연적 교육개론서 출간해 글로벌 기준 삼고 UN 산하기관이 목표
고 이사장은 오는 2022년을 목표로 독창적인 저서를 준비하고 있다. <자연적 교육개론서(가칭)>라는 이 교육개론은 대안교육에서 아이들에게 도움이 되고 흥미를 이끌 콘텐츠와 동시에, 21세기에 적합한 개론서가 필요함을 절감했기 때문이다. 인터넷혁명시대였던 3차를 거쳐 AI의 4차혁명 단계로 들어가면, 20세기와 달라진 지구와 자연의 개념을 그대로 적용하기 어려운 점이 있다. 따라서 그러한 환경에 맞춰 21세기에 맞게 해석된 개론서를 세상에 내놓고, 영어로 출판해 전 세계에서 글로벌 기준의 교육자료로 쓰이도록 하는 것이 고 이사장의 목표다. 그러기 위해 내년부터는 뉴욕대를 비롯해 글로벌 100대 대학에 꼽히는 교육인사를 초빙해 우듬지학교의 교육철학에 공감하는 교육인재들을 결집시키는 장을 만들게 될 것이다. 고 이사장은 ‘우듬지’의 존재이유에 대해, 나뭇가지의 가장 끝에 달린 잎은 봄에만 피는 것이 아님을 빗대어 강조한다. 환경과 조건이 맞으면 비로소 피어나는 우듬지의 잎들처럼 충분히 준비과정을 거쳐 사랑과 에너지를 축적 받은 후, 아이들은 자신이 피어날 시기를 스스로 알고 완벽하게 만개하는 것이다. 이를 위해 부모와 교사의 절대적 믿음과 기대, 그리고 생명사랑을 강조한다. 이것이 바로 (사)우듬지의 철학이며 고 이사장이 생각하는 이상적인 교육혁명의 가치이기도 하다. 암기 위주의 닫힌 교육체제와 편향된 산업화 과정은 세계 각지에서 쌀과 밀이 나무에서 열리거나 과일이 가게에서 자란다고 믿는 아이들을 길러냈다. ‘할수있어연구소’에서 전인교육을 실천하고 있는 고 이사장은 이러한 비극을 차단하는 열린교육을 국내에서 이미 실행해 냈으며, 이러한 가치관과 함께 하는 여러 교육단체들과의 중장기적인 연계를 희망하고 있다. 이는 단순한 친목이 아니라 큰 그림을 함께 그려나가는 이들이 이 시대의 교육에 필요한 점을 발제하여 정부에 정책을 제안하고, 글로벌 교육네트워크를 구성해 민간 주도하에서 국가와 세계에 영향을 주는 일종의 긍정적인 연대를 말한다. 앞으로 고 이사장의 포부는 (사)우듬지로 시작하는 교육연대가 언젠가는 UN산하의 교육전문 NGO로 거듭나는 것이다. 어린 새싹을 사랑과 관심으로 대해 거목으로 키우는 미래, 그 희망찬 생명존중 인성교육과 창의적 대안교육의 행보에 ‘우듬지’와 고 이사장이라는 듬직한 존재가 있다.

Bringing a revolution to education
Alongside many titles given to him, Go Joong-gon also took the chairman's position of the organization committee of the IFFR (International Forum for the Educational Revolution) held by the Seongnam Industry Promotion Agency on April 22 this year. He is famous to be an educator who predicted the 4th Industrial Revolution long time ago and who devised creative educational methods. Realizing the importance of experience-oriented education by extensively reading Rousseau, Piaget, Montessori, Locke and Comenius in his early 20s, Go opened an alternative school that has no class in 1995 and it led to open Naturschule Woodumzi Kindergarten, the Koreanized nature experience school of the German Naturschule in 2002. Go also was inspired by Summerhill School (UK) founded by Neill from which he grew his idea of rejecting license but aiming at autonomy of children instead. The 'woodumzi' is a pure Korean word meaning the top of the tree trunk and Go introduced the 'Eco Therapy', an ecology healing study, customized to Korean children for the first time in Korea in 1999. He localized a number of teaching methods of advanced countries and passed them to developing countries in an effort to spread the value of the education that makes children happy. He invited educational officials to the IFFR held under the subject 'The Essence of Learning Methods We Lost, The Start of Lively Education' and suggested his opinions. The president Kim Choon-ho of The State University of New York Korea's presented on the day with 'Changes of Education Paradigm in the Age of the 4th Industrial Revolution' and Go made it a major issue of the year 2017. Go emphasized the need of the diversification on teaching methods that will suit the 21st century. Korea in fact is well known for high educational fever but the National Happiness Index is ranked below the OECD average due to the overheated competition. The alternative education in Korea should be built on the contents that help children find their aptitude and talent, strong and weak points and the ways to make their life happy. Self-directed learning and creative thinking then follow and it raises their creativity and competency and eventually leads them to be global leaders in the coming age of AI, according to Go. 

Publishing books and working with the UN
Go currently is writing 'Introduction to Natural Education (tentative)' and plans to publish the book by 2022. The book is to contain about the contents that are needed in alternative education for children in the 21C. It will be published in English and Go is ambitiously expecting it to be used as a textbook of global standard. As part of this effort, Go is inviting renowned educators from 100 universities in the world including New York University from next year in order to create a foundation for consolidation of those who have the same mind with the woodumzi educational philosophies. The leaves of the woodumzi burst open regardless the season as long as the condition is right. Likewise, children find themselves when to burst out from the love and the energy they received and accumulated. The absolute trust and love of the teacher and the parents are a must for this and this is the core philosophy of woodumzi and the ideal educational revolution of Go. In line of this effort, the You Can Do It Research Center is actively pushing forward its innovative personality education and Go is hoping to build cooperative relationship with more educational organizations in order to suggest innovative educational policies to the government and to build global educational networks. When asked about future plan, Go said "We are working hard to grow Woodumzi School as an educational affiliate of the NGO of the UN in near future so that more children in the world can benefit from our educational methods." <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
