Greece boasts world’s No.1 shipping industry. According to H.E. Dionisios Sourvanos, Greek Ambassador to Korea, shipbuilding is considered to be the most important area of bilateral economic cooperation between Korea and Greece. Greek ship-owners account for a very significant share of Korean shipyards’ orders while Korea has a large share in the Greek market of electronics and automobiles and exports a large number of industrial products. Power Korea met him and heard about the economic and cultural cooperation between the two countries.

1. When did you start your office in Seoul and what is your impression of Korea?
I arrived in Seoul on Jan. 26 2013 and I presented my credentials on Feb. 6 2013. So, I have already served in the Republic of Korea as the Ambassador of Greece for four years and four months. Regarding my impression on the country, Korea is quite an interesting country to observe in terms of its development and its course towards, if I may say, a more intriguing future. Seoul proved to be a great city to work and it seems to me that everyone wants (if not enjoy) to work in the city.

2. Could you shortly tell us about your previous posts?
My previous posts were mostly in Africa and Asia. I started my career as Secretary of Embassy and Deputy Head of Mission in Nairobi, Kenya. Then, I moved as a Consul to the Greek Consulate in Atlanta, Georgia (USA). Then, as a First Counselor and Deputy Head of Mission, I was posted to our Embassy in Beijing, China. After returning for two years in Athens, in our capital, dealing with European and Multilateral Affairs, I was posted again as First Counselor and Deputy Head of Mission to our Embassy in Berlin. After my promotion to the Ambassadorial rank, I was posted as Ambassador of Greece to Cameroon, then to Nigeria and finally to the Republic of Korea.

3. What do you think are the images that pop into people’s minds when they hear Greece?
Depending on the regions, country and even individuals per se, the images of Greece that can pop into people’s mind can vary from healthy and tasty Mediterranean food, cultural heritage, famous artists honoring their roots like Nana Moushouri or Maria Callas, some famous music themes from Zorba the Greek or Never on Sunday and, of course, Greece’s contribution to science sports (Olympic Games), philosophy (Plato, Socrates, Aristotle) and the Arts.

4. What are the key areas of diplomatic and economic cooperation between S. Korea and Greece?
Shipbuilding is considered to be the most important area of bilateral economic cooperation. Indeed, Greek ship-owners account for a very significant share of Korean shipyards’ orders. Tourism is also a very significant sector. Recently Greece has become particularly popular among Korean travelers. Korea has a large share in the Greek market of electronics and automobiles and exports a large number of industrial products such as machinery, burners, car parts, etc. It should be noted that Korean companies have been awarded several large projects, such as supply of railway vehicles in Athens subway and the Athens public transport electronic ticketing system. Petrochemicals are the largest item that Greece exports to Korea. We also export food and beverage, tobacco, marble, etc.

5. Could you introduce some of the Korean and Greek companies currently active in each country?
Korean investment in Greece is limited to trade activities and representative offices of shipyards. Some Korean companies established in Greece are Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and Hanwha Corporation. Greek companies that invested in Korea are Folli-Follie in the sector of luxury goods, Intralot in lottery and Cosmos in a joint venture with Hyundai Yachts.

6. Cultural and people-to-people exchanges are very important in building a close bilateral relationship. What cultural events and programs are you running at the moment?
So far, our cultural exchanges have not been fully explored, since tourism and business investments from both sides need further development. Individually, some great Greek artists have already come to Seoul, like the world famous violinist Leonidas Kavakos in 2015 and just now the renowned conductor George Petrou, a specialist in Baroque repertory, who is going to conduct Vivaldi’s Opera Orlando finto pazzo at the Seoul Arts Center, as a part of the Season’s program of the Korea National Opera. Besides, the Embassy of Greece, in cooperation with local Festivals and Institutions, has facilitated the participation of young talented Greek Classical Music Soloists in two major events organized by the Jeju Chamber Music Festival and by Korea Foundation, last July.

7. What do you think we can see, eat and enjoy when we visit Greece?
A visitor in Greece must indulge in the immense beauty and variety of own ancient history found in monuments, Museums etc, should taste our unique and healthy cuisine (one may try also our contemporary and very refined dishes) and, of course, enjoy the vibrant night life as well as exciting and memorable experiences by touring landscapes, both in mainland as well as the numerous islands around Aegean and Ionian Seas.

8. Lastly, what is your future plan and is there anything you would you like to say to <Power Korea> readers and Greeks living in Korea?
Since I am approaching at the end of my tenure here, I prepared myself to return to our Ministry of Foreign Affairs to finish my career sometime in the next few years. So, if I have some last words to your readers is “gamsahamnida” for the hospitality and the experience to grow older in your always evolving country, wishing you a bright, most hopeful mature future. As for the rather few Greeks working or living in Korea: do not forget homeland and honor your roots by prospering and succeeding in your endeavours, in this county that symbolizes growth, hard work, diligence, and rapid development.
