전국 최고수준의 리그 및 대회 운영
목포시축구협회는 해방 직후 창립되어 70년이 넘는 시간동안 목포와 대한민국의 축구 역사를 함께해왔다. 축구에 대한 열정이 가득한 목포시 시민들의 성원과 풍부한 축구 인프라를 바탕으로 성장하며 한국 동호인 축구의 메카이자, 엘리트 선수 육성의 산실로서의 역할을 다해왔다. 특히 지난 2009년 축구협회와 연합회가 통합된 이후에는 한층 더 폭넓은 지원활동을 펼치며 지역사회에 축구문화를 확산·보급하는 데 기여해왔다. 
현재 목포시축구협회는 연동초등학교, 제일중학교, 목포공업고등학교, 목포시청 실업축구단 등의 엘리트 팀과 축구동호인 34개 팀, 실버, 골드, 비파 여자팀으로 구성되어 있다. 총 인구 24만의 도시규모에 비해 2,700여 명 가량의 상당히 많은 수의 회원이 활동하고 있다는 것이 특징이다. 그만큼 목포시민들의 축구에 대한 관심과 애정이 크다는 방증이라 할 수 있다. 
무엇보다 목포시축구협회의 가장 큰 자랑은 전국에서 가장 뛰어난 시스템을 갖춘 최고 수준의 리그전이 활성화되어 있다는 점이다. 현재 협회에서는 20~30대, 40대, 50대, 60대, 70대로 구분된 연령대별 리그전을 평일 야간과 주말에 시행하고 있으며, 각 리그별로 10~20개 팀이 참가하고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 기업 후원 및 시 대회, 도 대회 등 각종 대회도 왕성하게 펼쳐지고 있어 동호인들의 체육활동을 위한 여건이 잘 조성되어 있다는 평가를 받고 있다.
지난해 3월, 제31대 회장으로 취임한 최영수 회장은 “저희 목포시는 오랫동안 대한민국 축구의 성지이자, 메카로 자리해왔습니다. 관내 인조잔디구장이 5곳, 천연잔디구장이 4곳 갖춰져 있을 뿐 아니라, 지난 2009년에는 2002한일월드컵 수익금을 통해 추진된 목포국제축구센터가 인조잔디 4개면, 천연잔디 3개면으로 개관하며 더욱 풍부한 인프라를 갖추게 되었습니다. 또한 국가대표 감독을 역임했던 허정무 前 감독의 고향이자, 많은 프로축구단이 동계훈련지로서 선택하는 곳이기도 합니다”라고 설명했다. 이에 덧붙여 최 회장은 “이러한 목포시축구협회의 회장직을 맡은 데 막중한 책임감을 느끼며 지난 1년간 협회 체계 정비와 동호인 대회 활성화, 리그전 운영 개선 등에 힘써왔습니다. 올해 또한 동호인들의 적극적인 참여와 성원 속에 좀 더 많은 경기, 더 좋은 경기를 진행할 수 있도록 체계적이고 효율적인 운영에 최선을 노력을 다할 계획입니다”라고 밝혔다.

“축구에 대한 열정으로, 지역축구 발전에 최선 다할 것”
오는 5월 13~14일, 목포시축구협회는 대표적인 지역기업인 보해양조㈜가 후원하는 ‘제2회 보해양조배 축구대회’를 개최한다. 지난해 신설된 이 대회는 단일대회 신설을 위해 보해양조측을 끈질기게 설득해 온 최영수 회장의 노력의 결실이다. 그는 “동호인들에게 있어 대회 출전은 스포츠 활동의 자극제이자 동기부여로 작용합니다. 또한 다른 팀들과 함께 즐겁게 어울리고 교류하면서 얻게 되는 공동체 의식과 지역사회에 대한 소속감, 애향심은 돈으로는 살 수 없는 중요한 가치를 우리에게 전달하게 됩니다”라고 설명했다. 또한 협회는 동호회 회원들의 월 회비를 모아 연 500만 원 가량의 엘리트체육 장학금을 지원함으로써 축구 선수를 희망하는 어린 꿈나무들이 좋은 환경과 교육 속에 잠재된 기량을 만개할 수 있도록 돕고 있다. 최 회장은 “저는 앞으로도 목포시민과 축구 동호인들이 마음껏 생활 속 체육활동을 즐길 수 있는 장을 마련하는 것에 매진할 계획입니다. 또한 저희 목포시에서 지역과 국가를 대표하는 훌륭한 선수가 배출될 수 있도록 지원을 아끼지 않겠습니다”라며 포부를 밝혔다. 이에 덧붙여 그는 “한 가지 아쉬운 점이 있다면, 여타 지역축구협회와는 달리 협회 전용축구장을 보유하고 있지 못해 매 경기시마다 구장 사용료로 상당한 비용을 지출해야 한다는 점입니다. 축구 동호인들이 부담 없이 생활체육을 즐기고, 이것이 축구 발전의 동력으로 이어질 수 있도록 시 정부의 관심과 지원을 부탁드립니다”라고 당부의 말을 남겼다. 한 단계 더 높은 곳을 향한 발걸음을 시작한 목포시축구협회의 발전과 도약에 응원의 박수를 보낸다.

Running top notch league and competition 
Mokpo soccer association has been around over 70 years as it was built up right after the Independence Day, so it has seen what Korean soccer went though. They have much love and passion by people in Mokpo so, has grown with plenty of soccer infrastructure as for a mecca of Korean soccer and a cradle of elite soccer players so far. Especially, since soccer association and society was unified as one since 2009, they have contributed on spreading and providing soccer culture in local by doing expanded supporting activities. Currently, Mokpo soccer association consists of Yeondong elementary school, Jaeil middle school, Mokpo technical high school and professional soccer team of Mokpo as elite team, 34 of soccer team for hobby, and female soccer team such as silver, gold and VIPA. The certain thing is there are about 2,700 soccer players out of 240 thousands of people in the number of total population, which is huge. It proves people in the city love soccer and support as much as they are interested in. 
Most of all, their best thing is that they have the remarkable leagues with wonderful system in this country, which is their pride. Now, the association let various range of age like 2-70’s for each decade has a league every weekend and night time during the weekdays and each league is made of 10 to 20 teams. 
Last March, president Choi, Young-Soo of Mokpo soccer association was inaugurated and he said, “Our city, Mokpo, has become a mecca and sanctuary of Korean soccer history for a long time. Not only we have 5 artificial turf fields and 4 natural grass fields but also, we have 4 artificial turf sides and 3 natural grass sides at Mokpo international football center coming out of the profits of 2002 Korea-Japan WORLDCUP. From that we got to have richer infra because of that. Also, Mokpo is homeland of the former director Heo, Jung-Moo who was teaching players before. Surely, many professional teams come here to train themselves as well.” 
In addition, he revealed, “I have been trying to adjust the association system for one year, think of activation some competitions for soccer lovers and even improvement of running the league as I felt serious responsibility for my position of Mokpo soccer association. This year, I also do my best to get more games and better games as well out of their active participation and supports with systematic and effective run.” 

Do the best for the local football development with passion 
On 13th and 14th of May, Mokpo soccer association will host the 2nd BOHAE BREWERY CUP football tournament sponsored by BOHAE BREWERY Co., Ltd. This match was started last year and it is a fruit of effort by president Choi, Young-Soo who had persuaded the company with patience because he wanted to open a new league. 
He explained, “As for football a lover, joining the competition is working as a stimulator and motivation at the same time. Also, it makes them have community spirit, sense of belonging to the city and love of hometown by meeting other teams and hanging out with them, which is priceless. After all, they will deliver the most important value to us.” Besides, the association is supporting scholarship to elite sports with their subscription money, which is about 5 million won every month. So, they are helping young players with dreams and hopes in better environments and education to pull their abilities to soccer. President Choi addressed, “I have a plan to be stuck to the growth to let people here and football lovers do play and enjoy the sport including soccer. Also, our city will not save the support at all in order to produce great players who can represent for Mokpo and Korea. However, there is one thing I feel sorry. It is that we don’t have an exclusive field owned by the association, which is different from other areas. Therefore, we have to pay lots of money for the rent of field every time.”
Lastly, he left a message ,”I may ask you to give more interests and supports so that foot lovers can enjoy it without worries and it could affect the power source of developing football in the future.” We just encourage Mokpo soccer association that just started for the higher level step by step to get a leap and expansion.
