Creating a happy class where dream and talent bloom
Yangdong Elementary School principal Jeong Sung-sook

Reading promotes creativity and logical thinking
Founded in 1955, Yangdong Elementary School in Gwangju is not only famous for its history and tradition but also for reading and culture and art education. It once has 71 classes but the recent low birthrate made it to 6 classes of total 90 students. The school is nicely located nearby the Honam's largest traditional Yangdong Market and the Asia Culture Center. The school's most famous reading program is 'Blooming Dream Flower' from which students fosters power of thinking. It is taught in three stages; sowing, budding and blooming. The sowing secures books, makes study plan and builds electronic library. The budding, on the other hand, promotes activities such as reading marathon and clubbing and discussion and essay writing. Lastly, the blooming is run based on the experience program 'Yangdong Story' in which students engage in writing and reciting children's story and poem and essay. The program includes meeting the authors of the books and the whole process aims to develope creativity, thinking power and self-directed learning of the children. "I think reading education is most important for children to have a balanced thinking and an agreeable personality. Our reading program fosters children with ability in writing and expressing their opinions with clear vision" proudly says the principal Jeong. In recognition of its innovation, Yangdong Elementary School received an excellent reading and writing school citation from the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education.

Culture and art education change the world bright and positive
Yangdong Elementary School's culture and art education is as famous as reading education. The play and musical programs, for example, encourage students to have confidence and respects to others by understanding and playing the different roles. At the 'Curtaincall Onstage' held in May last year by the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service, Yangdong Elementary School won one of the three excellent prizes (top prize) with the play 'Respond 1980' themed on the May 18 Democratic Uprising Gwangju. It was a result of the 'Art Flower Seed School' program introduced by Jeong in 2015. The program led Yangdong Elementary School to be chosen as one of the 10 excellent schools and the school is supported 260 million won by the government for 4 years until 2018. The fund diversified the school's programs to design, ukulele and gallery visit alongside the play and the musical classes. "I can clearly see a significant improvement of the school that students are happier than ever before and there is no such thing as school violence at all." As the follow up project of the Art Flower Seed School, Jeong is preparing to introduce 'Art Flower Sprout School'. "The essence of education I think is growing a man like a man. Honesty and responsibility in this respect play a very important role to foster the man as the man who makes contribution to building a better society and a better world" says Jeong. She closed the interview with a quote of the famous 'Foreword' written by the poet Yun Dong-ju: "And I will walk the road that has been given to me". <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
