Dreams about the education for mutual growth of students, university and community
HONG, SUNG GEUM, head of ACE Center, Chosun University

It’s been kind of a national consensus for a few decades that our college education needs changes. Especially, to prepare well for a 4th Industrial Revolution, many experts insist on the change of the entire college education. Its importance is growing bigger with the current conditions where with a large decrease in the number of college students, coupled with deepening problem of unemployment for the youth, not to mention other challenges from home and abroad. This is why the Education Ministry, together with the KOREA Council for University Education, is enforcing ACE+ project to create a leading model for undergraduate education and strengthen the competitiveness of college education by rearing a nice college.

To develop a leading model for undergraduate education, and to realize education for creativity and convergence

Being selected for ACE (Advancement of College Education, renamed ACE+ from effective 2017), this year Chosun University marked its 4th year of the project. Chosun University has been devoted to rearing talents with 3C capacities – confidence, convergence and consideration - and creative glocal culture talents. Especially, the university has laid focus on rearing company-oriented culture talents who are able to contribute to the development of glocal industry and social development.
The Center started by innovating liberal education, which has suffered qualitative deterioration, lack of diversity and the limitations of weighing particular courses for only weaving baskets. However, entering the 4th Industrial Revolution has dimmed the border between majors and non-majors and boosted the importance of convergent capabilities, causing the necessity for improving liberal education system. Accordingly, the Center has lifted the credits for liberal education to over 30% of those needed for graduation through total revision of curriculum while beefing up relevant education to cultivate creative and convergence talents in combination of science/engineering and humanities. The Center is operating core subjects for freshmen in linkage to National Asia Culture Center and then CU Culture Week events in connection as program for comparative departments, in order to enhance the students’ attainments.
Such changes have led to reorganizing the major education intended for creative glocal capabilities. The Center has set up Convergence Education Center for composing curriculum for majors, Educational Evaluation Center for controlling quality continuously and Non-curriculum Course Operating Center for integrative management of non-subject curriculum. It also opened creative convergence subjects for majors as related to Asian culture, China business, automobile business administration, public enterprise/public institution and psychotherapy through art. While operating language program and culture experience program for overseas for liked majors, the Center is developing and expanding problem solving and participative classes related to career-tailored major track and departmental major curriculum under participation of all departments.
Center head HONG, SUNG GEUM, explained “We are pushing ahead with diverse projects in relation to reorganizing curriculum and education system to realize teaching deep and taking care widely. We are offering the opportunity for students to select their wanted major initiatively on the base of open-type school affairs while, for liberal education, we have lifted it up by fulltime professors to 66.7%.”
Meanwhile, Center head Hong was cited last March by Vice Premier and Education Minister for her contribution to find and spread excellent model for undergraduate education.

“Will build a university coveted by students around the country”

Chosun University ACE Center’s efforts have been recognized. It was accredited with excellent performance at ‘2015 ACE’s 2nd year midterm results’ and obtained the only certification among private universities in Gwangju/Jeonnam at 2nd anniversary. In its process, the university’s ‘Jump SOS program for low-record students’ carried out since 2015 was selected as excellent case for teaching/learning sector. ‘Jump SOS’ program is characteristically involved with friends, seniors and professors, especially with lifelong advisor and senior mentor for effective study in an effort to help endangered poor-record students with their planning on the whole campus life and enhance their confidence, motivation and self-directed study abilities through learning strategy by type.
One-stop Student Support Center provides systematic intensive care program through ‘FIVE JOYS’ preventing their drop out. ‘Global Self-challenger,‘ a major-related self-rule program, enjoys high attention and participation from students. This is the program for teams of 4-5 students who will perform a related assignment under set themes and challenged states. It supports scholarship individually, and students are provided with an opportunity to cultivate global capacities through thematic in-situ survey, campaign and project. Besides, the Center is operating ’75-mnute class’ from this year for an effective discussion class capable to increase problem-solving.
With objective for this year (4th year) to share and spread excellent performance modes, the Center is positively signing memorandums of agreements with non-ACE+ universities. Last January, it tied an exchange agreement with Gwangju Woman University, Chooncheon University of Education (March) and Gwangju University, Jeonju Univ. and Honam Univ. (April for these three). Besides, it signed, memorandum of agreements with Malaya University for ‘Asia-linked major’ program, Mongol Science and Technology University for ‘Jump SOS’ program and is going to sign a memorandum of agreements with Ho Chi Minh University (Vietnam) and Mongol Ethnic University in the former of this year. Center head Hong clarified, “This year the Center is planning to share curriculum and education support programs through forum and presentation to spread our past achievements to the entire society. In the fall semester of this year, we will enlarge and reorganize the programs so that local non-ACE+ university students may participate in Chosun University ACE+ program: With constant endeavor to cultivate company-oriented culture talents for community, neighbors and development of glocal industry , Chosun University ACE Center is expected to bear a deserved fruit.
