적극적인 해외시장 개척, 지속성장의 토대를 쌓다
4차 산업혁명 시대를 맞아 기술 중심 중소기업의 육성은 국가경쟁력을 강화하기 위한 중요한 수단으로 부각되고 있다. 특히 글로벌 시장에서의 경쟁력을 갖춘 중소기업은 지역 경제와 관련 산업 분야의 발전 및 활성화에 커다란 영향을 미친다는 점에서 더욱 그 의미가 크다. 
지난 2001년 ‘글로벌광통신㈜’으로 출발한 광케이블, 광부품 및 광센서 전문 제조업체 지오씨㈜는 각 가정에 쓰이는 FTTH 광케이블을 주력으로 원전, 옥내외용, 특수 광케이블을 생산해왔다. 특히 아시아 최대 규모의 광케이블 생산설비를 구축하고, 이를 바탕으로 고객 다각화에 힘씀으로써 이후 정부의 광케이블망 보급 사업 종료로 인한 국내 시장 침체기에도 큰 위기 없이 지속적인 성장세를 이어나갈 수 있었다. 이에 대해 박인철 대표는 “저희는 2012년 인도네시아를 기점으로 광케이블 수요가 높은 국가들에 적극적인 시장 진출을 추진해왔습니다. 지난 10년이 넘는 기간 동안 매년 5회 이상 해외 전시회에 나서 세계에 저희 제품을 알리는 데에 힘썼으며, 현지 방문을 통해 고객과의 신뢰를 쌓으며 경쟁업체보다 앞선 위치를 확보하는 데에 주력했습니다”라고 밝혔다. 
2013년 인도네시아에 합작법인 ‘INTI-GOC’를 설립하고 생산공장을 구축한 지오씨는 우수한 품질과 가격경쟁력을 바탕으로 같은 해 멕시코 시장에도 진출했으며, 2015년에는 기준이 까다롭기로 유명한 프라스시장에도 진출해 현지에 FTTH 광케이블 생산 합작 공장을 설립예정에 있다. 또한 국내 최초로 기존 전기 화학식 센서를 대체한 광학식 수질센서를 개발·상용화에 성공하며 신사업 개척을 위한 꾸준한 R&D 투자의 결실도 맺었다. 이들이 개발한 광학식 수질센서는 물의 온도와 용존산소량을 분석, 5분 단위로 알려줘 산소 공급과 조기 출하, 치어 방류 등의 대응책을 적·녹조가 발생하기 전 실행해 피해를 줄일 수 있는 제품이다. 기존 제품보다 유지비 포함 전체 비용을 절반 이하로 절감할 수 있으며, 6개월 이상 유지관리보수가 필요 없다는 점도 특징이다. 

세계10대 광산업분야 선도기업을 목표로
신속한 생산과 신뢰도 높은 제품, 맞춤형 제품 제공을 핵심가치로 삼고 성장을 거듭해 온 지오씨는 광센서 분야의 세계적인 원천기술과 자체개발 브랜드를 바탕으로 글로벌 시장에서의 확고한 입지를 다져오고 있다. 2015년을 기점으로 해외수출 비중이 내수를 넘어섰으며, 2015년 ‘천만불 수출탑’ 수상에 이어 코넥스 시장에 상장했다. 지난 4월에는 중소기업청 주관 ‘월드클래스 300’ 기업에 선정되며 해외시장 진출에 더욱 큰 동력을 확보했으며, 현재는 코스닥 이전 상장을 준비하고 있다. 
이와 같은 놀라운 성장에는 총 13명의 우수한 연구기술진으로 구성된 자체 광기술연구소 설립과 매년 매출 대비 4% 수준의 연구개발 투자를 통해 지속적인 원천기술 확보에 매진했던 것이 주된 요인이라 할 수 있다. 지오씨는 현재 29건의 지식재산권을 등록(출원)하였고, 12건의 해외 인증을 취득한 상태이다. 또한 2015년에는 세계에서 두 번째로 원전용 광케이블의 ‘Nuclear Quality System’ 인증을 획득하기도 했다. 관련 기술의 국산화를 통해 원가를 절감하고, 미래 원천기술을 확보해 시장을 선도한 것이 고속성장의 동력원으로 작용한 것이다. 박 대표는 “저희는 장기공급이 가능한 고객을 확보해 안정적인 성장 기반을 마련하고, 원천기술 개발과 각종 인증 취득을 통해 경쟁력을 확보함으로써 세계 시장에서의 제품인지도 향상과 함께 선도업체로서의 지위를 확고히 다지고자 노력하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다. 지오씨는 오는 2025년까지 매출 2,000억, 수출 비중 80%, 영업이익 240억을 달성하는 것을 목표로 삼고 있다. 특히 미래산업인 광센서 분야에서의 세계시장 점유율을 높여감으로써 세계10대 광산업분야 선도기업의 반열에 오르는 것이 이들의 포부다. 오랜 노하우와 우수한 기술력, 끊임없는 연구를 통해 광산업 분야에서의 무한한 가능성을 열어가고 있는 지오씨㈜의 앞으로의 행보를 주목해 보자.

Sustainable growth through pioneering overseas markets
In the coming age of the 4th Industrial Revolution, the technology-oriented industries are ever increasing the importance of their presence. The role of the SMEs with technology competitiveness, in this respect, is expected to play a huge influence on advancement of the national economy. The optical electronics company GOC opened its door in 2001 in the name of Global Optical Communication and has been producing FTTH optical cable and optical parts and sensors. GOC has the largest scale optical cable production facilities in Asia and has secured its global clients. "We have participated more than 5 times a year in various global exhibitions for the last 10 years and opened our first export channel to the Indonesian market in 2012 where the demand for optical cable was very high. We established joint corporation INTI-GOC in Indonesia in 2013 and secured local manufacturing factories. With our excellent quality and price competitiveness, we moved onto the Mexican market, and then Europe in 2015 through yet another joint corporation for FTTH optical cable" says CEO Park In-chul of GOC. Park also succeeded development and commercialization of optical water quality sensor, surpassing the functions of the existing chemical type sensor, for the first time in Korea. It analyzes the water temperature and the dissolved oxygen and shows the figure every 5 minutes which makes fishermen easy to control their fish farm and to minimize the damage from red tide or green tide. It also reduced the maintenance cost by the half and the maintenance is not necessary more than 6 months. 

Growing as the top 10 optical electronics companies in the world
Speedy manufacturing process, high quality and on-demand production are the three core values of GOC through which the company has secured global level original technologies and its own brands in the sector of optical sensor. The company won the $10m Export Tower in 2015 and listed its name in the CONEX as well as in the World Class 300 of the Small and Medium Business Administration last April. Using these achievements as springboard, GOC is ambitiously pushing forward listing its name in the KOSDAQ in near future. The growth engine of GOC is the research team consisting 13 specialists and its own optical technology research center. GOC pours 4% of the total yearly sales in R&D in order to secure continuous original technologies. GOC so far has obtained 29 intellectual property rights with 12 overseas certificates and in 2015 became the second company in the world which obtained the Nuclear Quality System optical cable certificate. "We secured clients with continuous demand, the stable growth infrastructure, original technology and the necessary certificates with which we made a strong presence in the global market." When asked about future plan, Park said "We set up a goal to achieve 200 billion won sales by 2025, with 80% being the export, of which 20 billion won as operating profit. We are positive that the achieving the target will lead us to the top 10 optical electronics companies in the world." Park is confident that the development of the 'non-blood collecting sugar test sensor' last year will lead to a new development of mobile app this year that automatically recommends ideal skin products to each consumer. <Power Korea> sends a message of support to GOC that has limitless growth possibilities.
