Meeting a master Korean zither maker!
Master Huhmuh of Bumeum Kuaksa (Korean zither brand)

"A masterpiece comes from artisan spirit"
"People don't have artisan spirit nowadays." We can overhear the phrase every now and then from someone with a sigh, swinging his head right and left. Yet we face the reality of the time that forces us to be versatile and it is not a surprise that someone not to give a damn about it. Still every now and then, the word "artisan spirit" enchants us and leaves a deep impression in our heart as the property of it does not easily change or disappear. Let us take time to think about the "artisan spirit" by taking a good example of Bumeum Kuaksa, the sole Korean zither making workshop in South Jeolla Province. The master CEO Huhmuh of Bumeum Kuaksa stepped into the world of zither making on recommendation of his sister's husband who ran Namdo Kuaksa in Gwangju City in 1989. It was 2001 that he opened his own business in Damyang. "I was just intrigued by the fact that I could make something with my own hands at first. But the instrument gave different sound and resonance depending on the level of my skill and the "devotion". It was a mysterious feeling and I was getting more drawn to it" says Huhmuh in retrospect. There are two kinds of Korean zithers: a six stringed 'geomungo' and a twelve stringed 'gayageum'. The former sound thicker and the latter lighter. Both are made of royal foxglove tree aged between 30 and 50 for rich resonance. The wood is left dried for about 6 to 7 years before cut into desired sizes and smoothed it off with the plane which must be done with hands for good sound. The wood then goes through forming resonance tank and ironing before finish off with silk thread and tuning. Due to its long tradition and history, Bumeum Kuaksa is supplied with the best materials available which are warmly greeted with the best hands of technique every time the come. "A zither made of immatured wood gradually changes the sound from stunning good to losing the depth as time goes by. So the using the fully matured and well dried wood is crucial."

Spreading the tranquil charm of Korean sound to the world
The master Huhmuh's 30 years of expertise and the excellence of the Bumeum Kuaksa zithers are already well known. He won a number of prizes at the Korea Annual Traditional Handicraft Art Exhibition for 3 years in a row from 2003 to 2005 and the administrator's prize in 2009 from the Public Procurement Service in recognition of supplying 400 zithers to education offices nationwide every year. Also, master Huhmuh invented a zither tuner in 2001 and registered it as a utility model and in 2004 obtained a patent for the zither structure development. Meanwhile, Bumeum Kuaksa signed an agreement for technology cooperation with Jeonnam Provincial College in 2008 and is actively pushing forward an industry-academic cooperation in traditional music instrument manufacturing method and design. It is notable that the Bumeum Kuaksa's bamboo embossed pattern zither is very expensive but people who think it worth paying order more than 50 of it a year. But the visitors to the master workshop are not only the professional zither players but also normal people including students who cannot help falling in the charm of the sound. At this stage, it might be worth giving a thought whether master Huhmuh achieved this much recognition if the zithers were mass produced. "All of Bumeum Kuaksa zithers have the unique seal guaranteeing their maker and the quality. And I and my devoted artisans are proud to say this." To add one important thing he missed mentioning, all zithers with the Bumeum Kuaksa seal are guaranteed the lifetime after care services. Currently, Huhmuh's son is majoring in Korean classical music at the moment with humble ambition to succeed his father's artisan spirit. Let us back to the beginning, many of us are drifting in seeking of better job, better pay or socially regarded to be cool position and it has become a daily routine without ourselves knowing it. In this respect, it is good to have a thought even for a while, what really make us happy in life. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
