서로 다른 재료, 질료가 공존하는 믹스드 미디어에 시공과 오감(五感)의 느낌을 결합하면 동의어로서 더 큰 개념이 되는 인터미디어로 진행하게 된다. 이 인터미디어의 혁신을 이뤄냈으며, 해외 비엔날레에서 퍼포먼스로 대중적 인기를 얻기 시작한 여성 아티스트의 원조 격이자 한국 추상미술계를 잘 알린 선구자가 있다. 그는 바로 퍼포먼스 미술로 오래 전 유럽에서 미술한류를 일으킨 남홍 화백이다. 나비의 모습으로 출발해 둥지로 귀환하려는 남 화백은 최근 홈그라운드인 유럽과 미국 외에도 한국 활동의 비중을 함께 늘려가고 있다.

추상성과 화려함의 감각적 접근으로 프랑스 예술계의 공감을 얻은 나비

미술계에서 재료의 혼용이 유행하던 1966년, 추상표현주의 그룹 ‘플럭서스’의 딕 히긴스는 새로운 미디어매체와 미술의 혼합을 예고하는 인터미디어 개념을 제시했다. 이 개념에 따르면 인터미디어는 과거를 답습하는 것을 부정하는 혼용의 형태이다. 그럼에도 과거와 전통을 따르면서 인터미디어와의 성공적인 결합을 이룬 사례는 드물지만 분명히 존재했다. 남홍 화백은 바로 그러한 혼용을 잘 활용한 퍼포먼스 아티스트이다. ‘신고전주의와 화려한 당디즘이 소박한 추상예술을 만나 이뤄낸 경이로움과 환희’, 혹은 ‘동양에서 온 순환과 영겁의 날갯짓’ 등 아름다운 수식어를 달고 프랑스에서 36년 째 날아오르고 있는 남 화백은 대보름날 한지에 불을 붙여 축원하던 할머니와의 추억을 퍼포먼스로 재현해 세계인들에게 한국 추상예술의 품격을 널리 알려왔다. 일상에서 발견한 소재로 비일상적인 것을 재현하는 예술의 가치를 예지한 뒤샹처럼, 남 화백은 전위예술을 처음 접하는 사람들도 이해하기 쉽고 소박한 소재로 신묘한 종합예술을 이뤄내 미술 애호가들을 설득하고 가치를 인정받게 된다. 한불수교 130주년기념 파리16구청 남홍 초대행사에서 여러 테마를 재현하는 전시와 공연을 겸했던 남 화백은 장구의 소리와 흰 천, 붉은 꽃잎의 시각적 요소의 앙상블을 이뤄내 시와 문학의 시각화, 미술의 청각적 상징이라는 주제를 감동적으로 풀어내기도 했다. 퍼포먼스와 함께한 설치작품인 ‘삶의 자취’, 그리고 남 화백의 퍼포먼스에서 가장 중요한 종이 태우기와 천 찢기로 보여주는 치유와 순환의 이치는 동서양의 정서를 잘 융합시켰다는 평가를 받는다. 이러한 상징 중에서도 가장 인상적인 ‘나비’ 테마는 V자를 닮고 꽃잎처럼 만발한 나비형상 군집으로 작가의 자아와 인류의 삶과 죽음을 병치시키고 있다. 미술가로서 철학의 경지를 완성하고자 우리에게 던지는 그 생생하고도 강렬한 메시지에 깊이 수긍하게 된다.

소리와 형상, 시각효과의 신비로움으로 시대를 앞서간 토털 아티스트

남 화백은 단순화와 군집으로 주제를 상징한 나비 외에도 계절, 자연을 소재로 하여 한민족의 정서와 세계인의 보편적인 정서를 동시에 어루만져 주었을 뿐 아니라, 단순한 채색에서 꼴라주, 입체작업 모두를 추구한 그림을 많이 그렸다고 한다. 100호 이상의 대작을 많이 시도했으며, 원색의 선명함, 크기의 웅장함에서 나온 시각적 효과까지 계산하여 사진보다 실물이 더 아름답다는 남 화백의 작품들은 퍼포먼스의 역동적 감동을 배가시킨다. 최근에는 귀환이라는 메시지를 담아 현실에도 적용하기 시작한 남 화백은 고향인 대구에도 아뜰리에를 마련해 많은 작업을 하고 있다. 또한, 작고한 앙드레 김의 마지막 유작 드레스를 입고 해외에서 퍼포먼스를 하며 많은 세계인들의 관심을 받기도 했다. 남홍 작품세계를 대표하는 퍼포먼스인 무상로를 펼칠 때 장구와 창, 모던댄스를 곁들이며 즉흥적으로 작품 시연을 하고 그의 몸짓을 통해 과거와 현재, 동양과 서양의 아름다움이 융해돼 파격과 우아함 속에서 날갯짓하는 열정으로 그 명성이 오랜 예술적 숙고와 재능 속에서 이뤄진 것임을 입증했다. 남 화백의 작품에서 이후 느낄 수 있는 것은 추억과 귀환, 희망이라는 메시지다. 그래서 ‘비상’을 주제로 하던 작업들은 ‘둥지’로 바뀌어, 그 원대한 모험이 노스탤지어와 안식처를 향한 그리움으로 향해 가는 변화를 느끼게 한다. 남 화백의 퍼포먼스를 장식하는 의상은 어느 새인가 한복에서 다양한 의상으로 바뀌었고, 직각의 벽면에 걸리던 그림들은 2차원의 공간으로 내려와 3차원적인 표현들을 보조해주게 되었다. 인간을 그리지 않지만 인간의 삶을 형상화한 사물, 자연, 생명체들의 존귀함으로 인간의 아름다움을 투사하는 남 화백, 그는 지금도 한국의 딸로 태어난 기쁨을 예술이라는 수단을 통해 전 세계에 전파하고 있다. 2017년 들어서 향후 2년 간 프랑스, 미국, 일본에서 전시할 새로운 작품들을 작업 중인 남 화백의 새로운 문화 예술적 성과를 기대해 본다.

Namhong

The butterflies in abstract and glamor captivates many hearts from the French art world
Dick Higgins of Fluxus, a radical and experimental art movement of the sixties, suggested a concept of intermedia. The concept rejected just following the then known art styles but tried various experiments on combining the tradition with intermedia. One of the performance artists who used this combination effectively is Namhong. She is famous for her style titled 'Wonder and Joy of Meeting Between Neoclassicism/Dandisme and Abstract' and 'Flapping of Cycle and Eternity from The Orient' with which she has made her name a strong presence in the French art world for 36 years. She made avant-garde art easy for people to understand by using simple yet unique materials. For example, she realized her childhood memory of her grandmother through a performance by burning the Korean paper to celebrate the full moon which is her trade mark. During the event that celebrated the 130 years of diplomatic ties between Korea and France in 2015/2016, Namhong gave a number of performances by using various materials such as Korean double-headed drum, and white clothes in collaboration with poetry, literature and visual and sound arts. 'Trace of Life', for example, is a combination of installation and performance and it was praised by many for harmonious combination between the common sentiments of the East and the West. The 'Butterfly' theme among them resembles the letter V, the shape of a group of butterflies around flowers in full bloom, symbolizing the life and death of the humanity and the ego of Namhong herself.

Apart from her main theme of butterfly, she uses 4 seasons and nature in a way to deliver the Korean sentiments through collage or 3 dimensional paintings sized more than 162.2cm x 130.3cm. Some say that the works of Namhong are more beautiful than the real images and it accelerates the dynamic movements of her performance. She once gave a performance overseas by wearing a dress designed by the deceased fashion designer André Kim. It was her famous 'Musangro' performance collaborated with Korean double-headed drum, spear and modern dance. Namhong developed her style from 'Flight' to 'Nest' with her message of memory, returning and hope that travel toward nostalgia, haven or yearning. She also shifted her performance costume from Korean dress to variety. She does not draw human but renders its life through the beauty of matters and nature. When asked about her future plan, Namhong said that she is planning to hold exhibitions in France, Japan and the US for the next 2 years. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
