The leader of borderless intermedia art and performance art

The butterflies in abstract and glamor captivates many hearts from the French art world
Dick Higgins of Fluxus, a radical and experimental art movement of the sixties, suggested a concept of intermedia. The concept rejected just following the then known art styles but tried various experiments on combining the tradition with intermedia. One of the performance artists who used this combination effectively is Namhong. She is famous for her style titled 'Wonder and Joy of Meeting Between Neoclassicism/Dandisme and Abstract' and 'Flapping of Cycle and Eternity from The Orient' with which she has made her name a strong presence in the French art world for 36 years. She made avant-garde art easy for people to understand by using simple yet unique materials. For example, she realized her childhood memory of her grandmother through a performance by burning the Korean paper to celebrate the full moon which is her trade mark. During the event that celebrated the 130 years of diplomatic ties between Korea and France in 2015/2016, Namhong gave a number of performances by using various materials such as Korean double-headed drum, and white clothes in collaboration with poetry, literature and visual and sound arts. 'Trace of Life', for example, is a combination of installation and performance and it was praised by many for harmonious combination between the common sentiments of the East and the West. The 'Butterfly' theme among them resembles the letter V, the shape of a group of butterflies around flowers in full bloom, symbolizing the life and death of the humanity and the ego of Namhong herself.

Apart from her main theme of butterfly, she uses 4 seasons and nature in a way to deliver the Korean sentiments through collage or 3 dimensional paintings sized more than 162.2cm x 130.3cm. Some say that the works of Namhong are more beautiful than the real images and it accelerates the dynamic movements of her performance. She once gave a performance overseas by wearing a dress designed by the deceased fashion designer André Kim. It was her famous 'Musangro' performance collaborated with Korean double-headed drum, spear and modern dance. Namhong developed her style from 'Flight' to 'Nest' with her message of memory, returning and hope that travel toward nostalgia, haven or yearning. She also shifted her performance costume from Korean dress to variety. She does not draw human but renders its life through the beauty of matters and nature. When asked about her future plan, Namhong said that she is planning to hold exhibitions in France, Japan and the US for the next 2 years. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
