“맑은 물과 검은 먹물만으로 나타낸 한 장의 그림인데, 그림 속에서 하늘과 땅의 모습을 볼 수 있는 눈을 가지고 있다. 그림 자체가 모든 것을 보게 하는 깨끗한 눈이 있는 것이 아니라, 사실은 작자의 깨끗한 마음의 눈인 것이다. <창주문학상 시평>” 시를 쓰듯 그림을 그리고, 그림을 그리듯 시를 써가는 박명자 작가. 화가이자 문학가이인 그녀는 그림과 더불어 맑은 영혼으로 잉태된 동시(童詩)가 늘 곁에 있다. 그녀를 잘 나타내는 ‘그림과 시’ 는 일상이자 자신의 존재이며 행복의 근원이다. 소박함으로 점철된 작가의 삶은 살면서 그리며, 그저 편안하게 써가는 자연스러움으로 오히려 사람의 마음을 더 끌고 잔잔한 감흥을 안겨 준다. <편집자 주> 
                                                                                                                                        

구상과 비구상을 넘나드는 폭넓은 작품 선보여.
<연꽃>을 소재로 ‘꿈’과 ‘세월’ (표지작품 참고)을 표현한 박명자 작가는 폭넓은 작품세계를 구축해 가는 것으로 알려져 있다. 대표작인 <蓮(연)>은 구상과 비구상의 표현 효과를 절충해 어두운 흙탕물 속에서도 맑은 빛깔의 꽃을 피우고 열매와 뿌리까지 세상에 내어주는 ‘비움’ 을 절묘하게 표현해낸 수작으로 평가받는다. 
초기 작품으로 수묵담채 기법을 사용해 맑고 정감 있는 분위기를 강조한 <길Ⅰ>은 ‘길’이라는 주제를 통해 주변에서 쉽게 볼 수 있는 풍경을 작가 특유의 심상으로 표현했다. 수묵을 주재료로 한 <흔적 2011>은 일상생활에서 흔히 사용하는 A4, A3 사무용지를 활용해 다양한 흔적을 재구성해 눈길을 끌게 한다. 대구의 수성못 주변을 담아낸 <드림시티>에서 ‘집’ 은 삶이자 마지막 은신처임을 강조한 것으로, 삶에 지친 현대인들에게 위안의 빛을 준다. 이외에도 <봄>, <길Ⅱ> 등 다양한 작품을 통해 새로운 시도와 메시지를 선보여 왔다.
박명자 작가는 전통적인 한국화 기법인 수묵담채 기법을 중심으로 그림을 시작, 초기에는 한국의 실경을 주제로 한 한국화를 집중 연구하였으며 섬세한 사실적 표현을 주로 사용하였다. 그러면서 점차 작품 활동에 심취하며 회화의 경계를 없애 표현의 자유를 더 확대하고, 다양한 재료와 기법을 활용해 구상과 비구상이 접목된 작품에 집중했다. 특히 작품을 통해 선과 악, 흑과 백, 갈등과 선택, 과거와 미래, 조화와 부조화 등 삶의 다양한 주제를 표현해왔으며 현재는 다양한 비구상 작업을 시도하고 있다. 박명자 작가는 “자연을 자연 그대로 존중한다면 자연은 진실한 인생과 가치 있는 철학을 아낌없이 나눠주는 변함없는 벗이 될 것” 이라며 “인생의 많은 답은 자연의 순리 속에서 찾을 수 있다” 고 작품에 내포된 의미를 피력했다. 

유년시절부터 함께 한 그림과 글쓰기. “그림과 글은 분리될 수 없는 관계”
박명자 작가는 유년시절부터 미술과 글쓰기에 남다른 재능을 갖고 있었다. 초등학교를 다니던 시절 받은 문예와 미술 부문 관련 상장은 좁은 방 벽면을 채우고도 모자라 빈 상자에 따로 보관해둘 정도였다. 중고등학교 때도 문예부와 미술부에서 활동했으나 중학교 3학년 때부터 기울어진 가정 형편으로 취업이 수월한 교육대학교를 선택, 초등학교 교사로의 길을 걷게 되며 미술교육에 전념하게 됐다. 특히 초·중등 미술교사들의 교원실기 대회에서의 다양한 수상 이력과 지역 미술 인재 육성 교육활동 등은 작가의 길을 갈 수 있는 원동력이 되었다. 글과 그림에 대한 갈증은 대학원 수업을 들으면서 더욱 커져갔고, 40세의 나이에 재 임용고시를 치르며 그림과 더욱 가까워 질 수 있는 기회를 얻게 됐다. 여기에 석사학위 논문인 <언어활동을 통한 미술표현력 신장에 관한 연구>를 통해 문학과 미술의 연계성의 중요성을 더욱 인지하며 본격적으로 동시 지도와 미술교육에 몰입할 수 있었다. 박명자 작가는 “모든 학문이 연계성을 갖고 한 길로 통하듯이 그림과 글은 결코 분리될 수 없는 관계” 라며 “동시 속에 우리의 일상이 담겨 있고 그림 또한 사람들의 삶과 분리될 수 없다”고 동시와 그림의 관계성을 강조했다. 
박명자 작가는 아동문학에 전념하며 본격적인 화가 활동을 병행하게 됐으며 현재는 작품의 방향이 구상의 세계를 완전히 탈피하여 상징과 의미가 부여된 작업을 추구한다. 또한 정답을 찾기보다 도전하고 새로운 작업을 시도하는데 의미를 부여하고 있다. “인생에서 정확한 정답은 없다. 정답이 없는 삶을 살면서 때때로 혼란과 고뇌가 따르기도 하며 때로는 즐겁고 기쁘기도 하다. 아직은 도전하고 새로운 작업을 시도해나가야 할 때이며 나의 인생과 작품이 함께 무르익을 때가 되면 진정한 작품이 탄생할 시점이 될 것이라 생각한다”

창의적인 이미지와 밑바탕에 갈린 순수한 동심의 세계
창주문학상 당선, “아이들과 작업하며 보람과 기쁨 느껴”
박명자 작가는 고 ‘이응창’선생의 문학정신을 기리는 창주문학상 (32회, 동시 부문 당선)수상 시인으로 대구를 대표하는 아동문학가이기도 하다. 창주문학상 당선작인 <그림을 보며>과 <분꽃 씨처럼>  동심의 세계를 독창적인 시적 이미지로 잘 표현해 높은 평가를 받았다. 
그녀의 글은 대학과 대학원에서 문학과 미술을 전공하여 미적 감각과 그것을 형상화하는 예술적 기교가 뒷받침됨으로써 독특한 시적 세계를 만들어 냈다. 작품들은 동시를 통해서 평범한 일상에서 묻어나는 사람과 사람의 관계, 사람과 사물과의 상호교감을 섬세한 마음으로 담아내는 삶의 진실성을 추구하고 있다. 이와 함께 그녀는 십수년동안 문학지와 시집의 표지화, 삽화 작업 등을 통해서 그림과 문학적 재능을 서로 접목 시키고 있다.
박명자 작가는 문학인, 교사, 주부 등 다양한 역할을 완수하는 것이 쉽지 않다며 자신에 대한 믿음이 없었다면 불가능했을 것이라고 토로한다. 그림 전시회를 앞둔 시기에는 잠을 거의 잘 수가 없고 밤새 작업을 하고 난 뒤에도 새벽에 일어나 자녀들을 챙기고 출근을 해야 하는 상황은 작가로서는 최악의 조건이었던 것. 하지만 작업을 하면서 느끼는 무아지경과 창작의 즐거움, 작품을 통한 자아실현감은 이러한 악조건을 뛰어넘을 수 있는 경이로운 힘을 가져다 줬다. 특히 학교에서 아이들과 함께 작업을 하며 느끼는 시너지는 그녀에게 따뜻한 위안이자 보람이다. “아이들과 함께 하는 그림 작업에서 아이들은 늘 흥분한다. 나 또한 아이들의 창의력과 감수성에 공감하며 그 속에 힘을 얻는다. 아이들이 특별함을 주는 특별한 선생님으로 인정해줄 때 보람과 기쁨을 느낀다.”

힐링과 감동, 삶의 따뜻함을 느끼게 하는 작품 선사하고파.
박명자 작가는 그동안 개인전을 7차례 열면서 매번 다른 주제와 새로운 기법, 장르를 시도하며 고정된 틀이 없는 자유로운 작품 세계를 펼쳐왔다. 자신의 틀을 깨는 시도를 통해 스스로를 단련시켜 왔던 그녀는 이제는 자신만의 작품 세계를 정착화하기 위해 노력할 계획이다. 또한 우리의 일상을 보여줄 수 있는 주제를 통해 깊이와 철학이 담겨 있되, 모든 사람들이 쉽게 이해하고 공감할 수 있는 작품을 만드는 것이 앞으로의 꿈이기도 하다. 박명자 작가는 자신의 그림을 통해 사람들이 힐링을 얻고, 그 순간만이라도 감동과 삶의 애정을 느끼길 바란다. 
“세월이 흐를수록 사람은 사람을 멀리하고 두려워하며, 대중 속의 고독감은 깊어간다. 그러나 동시 속에는 거짓도 없고 외로움도 없다. 다만 태초에 우리가 꿈꾸던 진실한 세상과 즐거운 노래가 있을 뿐이다. 나는 시를 쓰듯 그림을 그리고, 그림을 그리듯 시를 쓰고 싶다.” 
현재 박명자 작가는 ‘(사)한국전업미술가협회’ 전시 활동을 충실히 해나가며 자신만의 작품 세계를 정착할 수 있는 주제와 기법을 연구해 가고 있다. 오는 8월에는 ‘(사)한국전업미술가협회’ 대구지부 주관의 <폭염속의 열정전 – 25인 부스 개인전>에 참여하며 자신의 행보를 더욱더 활발히 이어나갈 계획이다.

"I draw like writing a poem and write a poem like drawing a picture"

Crossing over between representational and nonrepresentational 
Artist Park Myoung-ja is known as an artist who draws lotus flower-themed  works through which she expresses 'dream' and 'time' (lotus flower is called 'yeonggot' in Korean). She combined representational and nonrepresentational in her work 'Yeon' to express 'emptying' by delivering her message that the flower which blooms from the muddy water gives its fruit and the root to the world. She delivered a warmth in 'Road I' by radiating a bright atmosphere on wash drawing while she used A4 and A3 papers to reorganize traces of our life in the work 'Trace 2011'. Other works like 'Dream City' tells that a house is a home and the last haven where we take a rest while she delivered new methods and messages in 'Spring' and 'Road II'. In the early period, Park focused on Korean landscape painting and realistic expression but expanded the scope, as time went by, to freedom of expression by breaking the border of painting and to combination of representational and nonrepresentational. She expressed contrasts between good and evil, white and black, past and present, and harmony and disharmony. "Nature becomes a fast friend of you whom you can share the value and philosophy of life if you respect nature as it is. We can find many answers of life from the laws of nature" says Park.

"Literature and art cannot be separated"
Park showed a great talent in art and writing from her childhood. The prizes she won at various competitions filled up the whole walls of the room and the leftover were kept in a box. She pushed forward her creative zeal up to the third year of her middle school years where her family's fortune started to wane. She turned her course to art education instead as a result and taught children at elementary school as an art teacher. Yet her talent brought her a number of prizes from art teachers competitions and she was much encouraged to be a full time artist. She amplified her desire for drawing and writing at a graduate school and her master's thesis 'Research on Improving Artistic Expression through Language Activities' emphasized on importance of connectivity between literature and art. "Literature and art cannot be separated. They are in our daily life and they are stories of us the people." Park shows a particular interest in children's literature and cherishes children's poem and combines her literary sentiments with art through which she imparts symbols and meanings to her new paintings nowadays. "There is no perfect answers in our life. Yet we lead our life in chaos and order and joy and sadness and push it through with challenging spirit. Likewise, I keep trying to create something new and by constantly doing this I will one day create a masterpiece."

Winning Changju Literary Award
Park's love of literature led her to win the 32nd Changju Literary Award in the category of children's poem with 'Appreciating A Picture' and 'Like Four-O'clock Seed' and she has become one of the well known poets in Daegu. The works reflected the relationship between the people, and the interaction between the people and the things, in order to talk about truthfulness of life. She also makes the most of his artistic talent to draw illustration for the cover of book or inside. It is not easy to play a housewife and an artist and a poet at the same time but her self-realization through creation has always motivated her to carry on. "I also feel motivated when I make something new with children at school. They get excited by creating something and I love observing their sensitivity. I especially feel worth when children remember me as a special teacher."

"I hope my works make people feel happy and healed"
Park has held 7 solo exhibitions with each different theme and method and genre. She breaks the mould of herself to breaks the existing norms and creates new styles. She puts her understanding of things and life into her works and endeavors to make them easy to communicate with people. "I hope my works make people feel happy and healed" says she and adds "We make distance with other people and become lonelier as we grow old. But there is no lie or loneliness in children's poem but a truthful world and a joyous song. So I draw like writing a poem and write a poem like drawing a picture." Currently, Park is preparing for 'Passion in Scorching Heat - 25 Booths Solo Exhibition' which will be held by the Korea Professional Artists Association in August this year. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
