[Art] Wonhaeng Han Do-woong, President of Sokcho Wood Carvers Association
Introspection about man-made world through concave carving

Trees have infinite vitality. An ordinary man cannot even attempt to guess the trace of the thousands of years of their standing. I feel respect and bow my head every moment I carve letters onto a dead tree for this reason. It is my biggest pleasure to put the spirit of our ancestors on a wood to see. All living things in the world are beautiful as they are and the foot path to reach the dreamy paradise is a communication with the sky. - artist's note -

The pupil of Sojae Lee Chang-suk (intangible cultural heritage No.16)
Wood carving creates each different beauty by whom it is carved. It is not easy to carve the wood with a knife as one mistake can ruin the whole design. It requires concentration for this reason. Based on Sokcho City, a wood carver Wonhaeng Han Do-woon is specialized in concave carving which the letters are to be carved. Han finds a great charm in concave carving and gives admiration to the depth it gives. Han loved touching wood since childhood. His dexterity naturally led him to carve a wood into a small wooden gong used by Buddhist monks and various other forms with which he received much praise from the elders around him. While exerting an effort in developing his wood carving skills, he met Sojae Lee Chang-suk (intangible cultural heritage No.16) and deepened his skills under his instruction. "There's a big difference between traditional and modern wood carvings in terms of methods and styles. The former values high of realizing the traditional letter forms while the latter of making one's own design. One mistake requires the restart of the whole process in the former while it can be used as an opportunity to accidentally create something unique in the latter. Personally, I'm enthusiastic about the charm of the former" said Han.

President of Sokcho Wood Carvers Association
Han uses a wood as it is whether twisted or cracked in order to create a variety of beauties in different shapes. "In fact, wood carving is a really hard job that I sometimes feel to put down the knives. Then I take a break to do things other than the carving but soon find myself actually carving yet another wood. I can't help thinking that it's my calling" said Han. His passion and achievement were well recognized by winning the runner up prize at the Korea Literary Painting Competition in the category of wood carving while a work was specially selected at the 5th Korea Wood Letter Carving Association Festival. So far, Han has held one solo exhibition and participated in 5 group exhibitions. He is a member of the Gangwon Wood Letter Carving Association and is serving as the president of the Sokcho Wood Carvers Association established in 2012. "Basic is the most important. The carver becomes too much conceited when ignoring it and cannot create great works. I want to make works which I should not be ashamed of myself" said Han.

"I wish to create a wood carving village in Sokcho"
Han is in charge of wood carving at Sokcho Lifelong Learning Center and Yangyang Cultural Center. Men and women of all ages are eager to learn the beauty of wood carving from Han 3 times a week. Han opened his workshop for them to use 24 hours and even makes a carving knife for them. "No one expects much when first started but diligence and consistency surely give one to create a good work. I'm planning to hold an exhibition at the end of the year with the works of my students through which we can take part in activating regional culture" adding that "Tourism is very important source of income in Gangwon Province and wood carving experience can be a program to attract tourists to the region. So I wish to create a wood carving village in Sokcho." Currently, Han is working on completing the 10 series of 'Gyeongmongyogyeol', a book written by Yi I, and he is in the 4th series at the moment. When this is finished, Han plans to hold his second exhibition while participate in an exchange exhibition held in August this year in Japan. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
