[Gimhae Special] Monk Yangji of Sinheung Temple
"Lower your mind and let it go to lead a happy life"

"Many Buddhists are reading scriptures and pray to be a follower of Buddha. But mistranslation of the scriptures in Chinese and Sanskrit to Korean might deliver misunderstanding. This is the reason I started to translate it myself" said monk Yangji of Sinheung Temple. The works Yangji has done or doing are included Cheonsugyeong (to become the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy), Prajna-Paramita-Sutra (stopping samsara), Sungaguigam (teachings of Monk Hyujeong), Imjerok (observer without expectation), and Donhwangbon Yukjjodangyeong (wisdom of truth and one mind). Yangji said "Cheonsugyeong is a book that wishes a life like Buddha and shows sincere penitence about sins on body, mouth and mind. Penitence means not to do the same sins again. So Buddhism forgives those who become penitent for their sins. It turns one's greed, anger and folly into precepts, concentration and wisdom. It also teaches people that the world right here, right now, is the paradise. Therefore in Cheonsugyeong, understanding about the latter three elements (precepts, concentration and wisdom) and put them into practice can lead one to be the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. Prajna-Paramita-Sutra, on the other hand, contains the essence of Buddhism in 270 letters and it is most recited scripture by Buddhists for it explains the way a Buddhist train oneself and how important the training is and why one must respect the Buddhist Priesthood. There is difference between normal wisdom and 'Jinyeo's wisdom' and Buddha was born with 'Banya's wisdom'. This means that wisdoms must coincide in Buddha's teachings in order for wisdoms not to be just a knowledge or a philosophy. Therefore, saying oneself is Buddha is the same as others are Buddha. Likewise, oneself has saved all living things is the same as another has not a living thing thus all is saved. Regarding Yukjjodangyeong, one can hardly get out of the problem that the monk Huineng receive the law, like Yusang's Jeonuiseol or accredited certificate, even if one has read several times of the Korean version of translation. The true Buddhists are those who try to live like Buddha who was born as a prince but left home in seeking of true freedom and peace. Therefore, one must think how to practice Prajna-Paramita-Sutra when reading Yukjjodangyeong. Regarding Sungaguigam (teachings of Monk Hyujeong), it is melted with deep thoughts of Hyujeong who wrote it with annotation, eulogy and comment. It was written in 1567 where confucianism was prevalent in order to encourage young Buddhists with devotion and edification and Hyujeong compiled the body of the complete collection of Buddhist Sutras. Therefore, the goal of Sungaguigam is a paradoxical writing where discrimination and thought are cut. Lastly, Imjerok (observer without expectation) teaches that those who try to find something outside cannot be a person who is free from everything. Therefore, we must lead our life in accordance with the teachings of Imje to be like Imje."

In conclusion, Yangji tells us that the teachings of Buddha make our mind peaceful and asks us to respect other people like our teachers because every individual is Buddha so that we can see things without prejudice. Yangji added "I and the world is not two but one. We live one humanity, the world of suffering of one community. If we communicate each other, exchange each other and cooperate each other, we can surely reduce the conflicts and confrontations of the world."
We cannot receive blessing just because we go to the temple and bow three times but put into practice the teachings of Buddha by throwing away greed, anger and folly. "Lower your mind and let it go to lead a happy life" said Yangji. <Power Korea> hopes that more people will lead a happy life with a helpful tip of Yangji.
