우리나라 사람들에게 돼지고기만큼 친숙한 육류가 있을까. 직장인들의 회식자리나 가족들과의 단란한 외식, 여행을 떠난 캠핑지 등에서 돼지고기는 언제나 우리 음식문화의 한 자리를 차지해왔다. 우리나라 국민들의 연간 돼지고기 소비량은 최근 5년 새 22% 이상 증가했으며, 돈육 생산시장은 약 7조원 규모까지 급성장했다. 그러나 이러한 호황 이면에 국내 양돈농가는 존폐의 기로에 서있다. 갈수록 강화되는 환경규제 아래 만성적인 악취 민원에 시달리고 있음은 물론, 분뇨처리 어려움과 비용증가로 인한 생산성 저하, 열악한 근무환경 속에서의 건강 악화라는 삼중고를 겪고 있는 것이다.

천연과실류 추출 효소, 악취요인 분해·제거에 탁월한 효과
양돈농가가 겪고 있는 어려움은 비단 어제 오늘만의 일이 아니다. 매년 악몽처럼 되풀이되는 전염병으로 인한 막대한 양의 손실은 물론이고, 2005년 이래 매년 강화되어온 환경규제는 양돈농가의 운영을 어렵게 하는 주된 요인이 된 지 오래다. 
잇따르는 악취 민원 아래 각 지자체는 수십억 원을 투자해 악취저감 및 방지시설 설치 의무화를 추진하는 등 방책 마련에 고심하고 있으나, 실질적인 효과를 거두지는 못하고 있는 것이 현실이며, 그로 인한 운영비 상승의 부담은 고스란히 양돈농가가 떠안고 있는 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 돈사 내 악취 발생의 주요 원인이 되는 암모니아(NH₃) 가스와 황화수소(H₂S), 이산화탄소(CO₂) 등은 가축의 성장을 저해하는 것은 물론, 호흡기질병 및 폐사율 상승의 원인이 되고 있다. FTA 체결 이후 저가 수입돈육의 시장 점유율이 점차 높아지는 가운데 국내 양돈농가는 그야말로 사면초가의 위기에 직면한 것이다. 
이러한 가운데 최근 악취 제거의 확실한 솔루션을 제시하며 크게 주목받고 있는 업체가 있다. 바로 친환경 악취저감제 ‘바이오매직^_ⓡ’을 개발한 지앤비솔루션㈜이다.

그간 양돈농가의 분뇨처리와 악취제거는 해당 농가 뿐 아니라 지자체의 가장 큰 골칫거리 중 하나였다. 국내 양돈농가의 보편적인 분뇨처리 방법은 물리적 탈수 및 대용량의 저장시설을 요구하고 있으며, 장기간 저장에 따른 부패 가스 발생으로 악취 민원이 극심한 상태였다. 
또한 활성오니를 활용한 정화처리나 미생물제제를 이용한 악취 저감법이 주로 사용되어 왔으나, 소독제 사용으로 인한 미생물 사멸을 방지하기 위해 소독을 기피하게 되는 등 더 큰 위험을 초래할 수 있음에도 마땅한 대책을 찾지 못하고 있었던 것이 사실이다.

바이오매직^ⓡ의 효과는 미국 인디아나주 그래크빌에 위치한 5,000두 규모의 Cotoonwood 양돈장에서의 실험 결과와 서울대 수의과대학 미생물학 교실 박용호 교수 연구팀의 실험을 통해 동물들의 스트레스가 90% 감소했고, 폐사율 70%감소, 출하일령 15일 단축이 증명됐다. 각각의 실험에서 바이오매직^ⓡ은 암모니아와 황화수소 가스를 포함한 악취 및 독성물질은 물론, 질소(N), 인(P)의 감소, 구리(Cu), 아연(Zn) 등의 이온성중금속 감소에도 탁월한 효과를 입증했다. 더욱 주목할 만한 것은 실제 양돈농가에서의 적용을 통한 현장 테스트에서도 그 놀라운 효과를 유감없이 발휘했다는 점이다. 
강원도 홍천군은 축산냄새 저감사업의 일환으로 지난해 3억 8500만원의 예산을 들여 양돈농장 5개소를 대상으로 바이오매직^ⓡ을 지원했으며, 올해에도 약 4억3천만원 규모의 추가 지원이 확정되어 있다. 
그밖에도 경기 파주, 충남 아산, 보령, 홍성, 충북 음성, 경남 함안, 창녕, 경북 경주, 포항, 예천, 전북 남원, 익산, 전남 무안, 영암,  제주 등의 양돈농장에서도 바이오매직ⓡ 사용 후 돈사 가스농도가 50ppm 이상이던 것이 10ppm 이하로 감소했으며, 악취 민원으로부터도 해방되는 성과를 얻고 있다. 부패가스 감소로 인해 30%의 폐사율이 2% 미만으로 감소되었고, 출하일령 또한 15일 이상 단축, 분뇨 펌핑 시간도 6시간에서 3시간으로 절약됐다는 사례도 속속 올라오고 있다. 
폐사율 감소와 출하일령 단축, 약품비 감소 등은 농장 생산성 강화에 도움이 되고 있으며, 특히 분뇨 발생지에서 바로 양질의 액체비료를 생산·출하할 수 있어 수익성 향상에도 기여하고 있다. 유 CEO 는 “무엇보다 가장 큰 장점은 농장 종사자 및 인근 지역 거주민들의 삶의 질이 향상됐다는 점입니다. 농장 내로 거주를 옮긴 농장주도 있고, 추가로 계획할 정도로 악취가 줄어들어 농장의 사육환경과 근로환경이 크게 개선됐으며, 끝이 보이지 않는 민원 분쟁 속에서 서로 등을 진 것이 아닌, 지역사회와 함께하는 민가가 인접한 도시형 축산업의 길을 열 수 있었다는 것이 저의 가장 큰 보람입니다”라고 말했다. 
지앤비솔루션㈜은 바이오매직ⓡ 출시 후 1년 반 동안 약 250여개 농장에 공급하고 있으며, 각 지자체로부터의 지원 문의도 잇따르고 있는 상황이다. 또한 바이오매직ⓡ은 수질개선과 하수처리장 악취제거, 경화가 극심한 라군 처리에도 탁월한 효과를 발휘해 더욱 관심이 높아지고 있다. 
과거 “펄프리사이클” 사업현장에서 추출되는 오물 처리 시 유기오염물 분해와 악취 저감을 위해 30억원 이상을 투자해 첫 제품을 개발했으며, 지금까지 총 47여억 원을 투입, 제품화에 성공해 바이오매직ⓡ을 선보인 유태철 CEO는 “직접 경험하지 않고, 단순히 판매만을 위한 사업이었다면 성공하지 못했을 것”이라 강조했다. 
그는 “자연과 환경에 대한 관심이 높아지고, 건강과 삶의 질을 우선시하는 경향이 커지는 상황에서 축산업 현장의 근본적인 개선 노력이 없다면 국내 시장은 밀려드는 수입 축산물에 그 자리를 빼앗길지도 모릅니다”라고 지적하며, “우리 축산업의 경쟁력을 강화하기 위해선 고품질의 건강한 먹거리를 생산하기 위한 환경 개선의 노력이 반드시 필요합니다”라고 강조했다. 그는 이를 위해 국내 축산 농가를 대상으로 한 제품 보급에 주력할 계획이다.

There is nothing new about the pig farms suffering from foot-and-mouth disease which causes a considerable financial loss of pig farmers and the environment regulations introduced in 2005 are becoming ever stricter year by year. People living around pig farms are constantly complaining about the bad smell lingering in the air and local governments are pouring billions of won in equipment and facilities but with little effect. In fact NH3, H2S and CO2, the main substances to cause the stink, not only make people hold their nose but also affect badly to the pigs in respiratory organs and prevents balanced growth. The worry of pig farmers does not end here as the cheap imported pork meat on the market flooding in by FTA is causing their face to furrow. The extracts of orange, papaya and lime become a complex form of enzyme through fermentation and it boosts up proliferation of microorganism in excrements and activates decomposing of organic matter by accelerating bio-reaction. "The complex form of enzyme in Biomagic carries out catalytic action, hydrolysis and oxidation and repeats its action millions of times to remove more than 92% of the bad smell (8% are natural smell)." The development of Biomagic seems to be the best choice for pig farmers considering the fact that the existing large excrement storage system or dehydration method are proven as ineffective. Biomagic does not require large storage and is compatible with disinfectant and is the best solution for decomposing hardened excrements and can turn the excrements to liquefied fertilizer through which the pig farmers can save the cost. It also decomposes ionic heavy metal which is good for environment. 

Creating a cleaner world
The test at the Cotoonwood pig farm (5,000 pigs) in Grek Vill, Indiana, US and the test by the Seoul National University microbiology professor Park Yong-ho's team reported that Biomagic reduced stress of pigs by 90%, mortality rate by 70% and delivery day by 15 days. The tests also showed that Biomagic effectively reduced toxic substances such as NH₃, H₂S, CO₂, N, P, Cu and Zn. 
Pig farms in Paju, Asan, Boryeong, Hongseong, Eumseong, Haman, Changnyeong, Gyeongju, Pohang, Yecheon, Namwon, Iksan, Muan, Yeongam and Jeju also reported that the gas concentration was reduced to 10ppm from 50ppm and they were free from resident complaints on the bad smell. Other cases also show a 30% reduction in gas, 2% in mortality rate, 15 days in delivery day and 3 hours in excrement pumping from 6 hours. Hongcheon County in Gangwon Province especially supported \385m to 5 pig farms for the use of Biomagic and additional support of \430m is scheduled this year. Reduction in mortality rate, delivery day and the cost of medicine are strengthening productivity and the on-site production of liquid fertilizer where the excrements are made can contribute to increasing profitability. 

Opening the age of urban pig farming

Some pig farmers even moved their residence in their farm or build additional facilities as the farming and working environments have become better and it opened a way for urban pig farming."
