[Art / Artist Kim Chun-hwa]
"Korean color painting is beautiful"
Kim spreads the essence of Korean painting in passion
I feel like I jumped into the simple paintings of our ancestors when seeing her works especially in terms of the lines and colors. Her works are like a living thing just broke out from the shell. It is the beauty of painting. The rationalism, devotion, morality and pureness of life in consistency makes me see a beautiful world. <Kim Chun-hwa - 'Beautiful Painting, Beautiful Life' / Art critic Kang Chan-mo>
'Flower paintings' blooming in colors
The current TV drama 'Shin Saimdang' is encouraging a reillumination on Korean painting as the viewers' interest in the works of the most famous Korean female artist Shin Saimdang is growing. The Korean painting artist Kim Chun-hwa conceals a meaning of 'spring flower' in her name. Her works of Korean color painting are themed on flowers and she gives a title to each of her works like 'A Joyful Day's Whisper (magnolia)', 'Girl's High School Days (camellia)' and 'Orchestra (poppy)'. With a discerning eye for beauty and the traditional expressive method as basis, Kim focuses on lines and colors. Her works, in a way, are a feast of nature with fragrance of flowers all over and one might not help joining the feast. Kim gives details with brush to the edges of the flower and cubic effect and vitality to leaves while makes the lyrical part of the flower conspicuous on the Korean paper, cloth, cotton or silk with thick and strong color, dye or red clay. This might be the reason that one might feel a noble beauty for her natural colored works with a sense of the essence of Korean painting intact through which Kim has led the Korean art world.
Promoting Korean painting as a cultural asset of the world
Some say that paintings reflect our emotion as well as the era. The term 'Korean painting' was first introduced at the 1st Grand Exhibition of Korea and in the textbook of elementary, middle and high schools in 1982. And the Korean color painting is divided into three parts: light-colored painting, deep-colored painting and wash drawing. They were passed down to the folk painting in the Joseon Dynasty through the Goguryeo Mural and Goryeo Buddhist paintings. They are our traditional art as well as a cultural asset of the world. Sadly, the almost none of the Korean color paintings are remained today. A reason might be found on the fact that the Baekje Kingdom sent potters and pigments to Japan in return for receiving military assistance, thus losing the originality and purity of our culture. Interestingly though, Japan developed it into their unique culture and Korea today is importing the pigments from the Japan. When in modern times, the Korean painting was yet to suffer from public indifference due to the rapidity and simplicity of the western painting pouring in. Color painting in particular requires a number of brush works and fastidious methods which rather discouraged artists to attempt the genre.
Promoting the beauty of the Korean color painting
In fact, a number of artists nationwide has engaged in a campaign to find the essence of the Korean painting. And Kim has been in the forefront. "Korean painting actually started from color painting. Look at the Goguryeo Mural and Goryeo Buddhist painting. The confucian scholars in the Joseon Dynasty era excluded the color paintings. It was still ignored by the people after the liberation because they thought it was like the Japanese's. But we had better know that the color paintings were the main stream of the history of the Korean painting." Kim developed her style by studying Cheon Gyeong-ja and entered into the art world after her long time career as a public servant. She was charmed by the beauty of color paintings and started to paint with flowers as the main theme in 1991. He formed Chaeyeonheo (color painting society) to keep the tradition of the Korean color painting and has held a group exhibition once a year. Kim recreated the works of our ancestor artists with her unique style and has become a senior artist in the field today. Kim has held 6 solo exhibitions and joined in a number of group and invitation exhibitions home and abroad. "It is our job to keep and pass down the methods our traditional color paintings not matter how hard the technique and effort it requires" said Kim. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
