The colors co-existent in harmony
"Lily white awaits after sensual harmony of folk painting and wrapping cloth and of flowers and mandala"
Oriental painter Lee Hyo-sook
From the lily on mandala to Seokchae paper white magnolia
Lee's 'Blooming Mandala' series has something different from normal flower still life. In Korean painting, 'belle', which the photo itself cannot realize the true texture and depth of color in the painting, is called Bunchae or Seokchae. And gradations of color, and light and shade technique are important elements. Bunchae in particular is completed in grave splendidness through endurance and it is only natural for color-driven artists to indulge in the style. Lee started to be charmed by the beauty of the works of the master folk painter Park Sang-gwang from her teenage. In her younger years, she paid a regular visit to the Wrapping Cloth Museum to meet the director Huh Dong-hwa. Lee is an oriental painter who has combined her unique personality with exotic elements. In her 20s, she found great pleasure in combining folk painting with the patterns of wrapping cloth.
Lee poured her passion in a work as big as 8 meters. Lee values high of naturalness, harmony, small but shining as the motives of her works and once drew a clear pattern on a glass with acrylic that resembles harmony of quilt, puzzle and tile. The work received a great response from <Pink Gallery>. The most important thing in oriental painting is the combination of paper and water according to Lee. The paper Lee uses is layered (baejeop), glued (bansu) or shelled (hobun) so that the paper can bear the colors upon colors. The papers used for Bunchae absorbs water and color to show a variety of effects in a sense of harmony. Lee finds harmony in the property of substance and poured her splendid expressiveness in 'mandala', the Buddhist symbols containing agonies and virtues of the universe.
10 years ago, Lee met a lily at her painter friend's funeral. She metaphorically shifted a trace of her friend onto the lily which developed into a successful combination of the flower and mandala. Lily represented her youth and memory and brought her a power of healing and visual imagination which led to the current still life-like Seokchae. Though not a religious person, her series works like <Perfume> and <Seeing the Fragrance> made people misunderstood her as a Buddhist. She has painted lilies for 10 years but her interest has traveled through various areas: patterns of wrapping cloth to more than perfect glass quilting to mandala lily Bunchae. Like she let go of her friend, she did so of lily and most recently found a new motif from white magnolia.
Making colors is an awesome process for Lee. She finds colors even when she is on a short trip for a rest while a continuous effort in tempering her technique is made at her studio. Lee draws a picture with full of emotion and for this reason her works are intense and easy to understand and do not need the help of a docent. Currently, Lee is exerting efforts in bringing up a new concept of modern Korean painting. The work must be a master piece that honestly contains the desires of Lee based on the harmony of the materials, colors and years of experience she has accumulated. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
