The biggest and the best naval architecture and ocean engineering institute

Opened in 1950, Busan National University Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering has played a pivotal role in the field of marine engineering for the last 67 years under the title 'fostering the world's best marine engineering specialists'. About 1,000 of the 3,229 graduates are actively engaged in the marine engineering-related industries equivalent to 30% of all designers of the world's 3 ship builders. Rising as one of the representative majors of Busan National University, the department shows an average 75% employment rate based on the last 3 years. It secured a yearly \17.3b government fund for education and \4.2b for research that makes it as the top naval architecture and ocean engineering institute in Korea. "We have 15 professors, 324 undergraduates and 104 post graduates which is the largest scale. We also have secured substantial results of global level research and development that cannot be compared to any other related institutes in the world with which we are really proud to make it acknowledged" said Lee Jae-myung, the dean of Busan National University Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering. The CK-1 project for strengthening undergraduate students is directly linked to the BK21 Plus project for strengthening graduate students who can also benefit from the Korea-UK joint degree project called 'Korea-UK offshore plant global talent promotion project' run by the department of the university. The students and professors also are actively participating in the cutting edge technology research collaborated with the Global Core Research Center for Ships and Offshore Plants and the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering.

Securing capable manpower and competitive technology is very important to promptly respond to the ever changing industrial trend. This is the reason that Busan National University Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering exerts its utmost effort in fostering global talents of both professors and students in the field. The researches, therefore, are connected to the industries to realize its principle of the field-centered research. "Korea's ocean and ship building industries in fact are in a downturn at the moment. But we must be really careful not to lose what we have accumulated and achieved in the field but push forward eco-friendly ship building technology and development of integrated ocean energy technology. So we have to turn the crisis to an opportunity to introduce more advanced technologies.
