The beauty of Korean paper made by a hundreds movement of hands
Jung Gye-hwa, CEO of Kohyun Gallery and Chairwoman of Kohyun Korean Paper Research Center

Jung reinterprets traditional beauty of Korean paper craft in modern terms

And exhibition titled 'The Use of Hanji in Our Life' was held at Korean Culture Center Art Gallery in Los Angeles, US on 10-24 February this year in order to spread excellence of the Korean paper craft to the world. A surprising number of both local Koreans and native residents paid a visit with raised interest in Korean culture. The works exhibited at the gallery not only boasted their traditional beauty but presented a new concept and interpretation of the Korean paper works in modern terms that suggested a future direction of the Korean paper. The exhibition was co-organized by the Kohyun Korean Paper Research Center based in Busan. "12 members of the center with 50 works of various kinds such as hand mirror, jewelry box, sewing box, lamp, clock and even furniture participated in the exhibition" said the chairwoman Jung Gye-hwa of the Kohyun Korean Paper Research Center.

Passing down the beauty in passion and pride
Successfully holding its first solo exhibition overseas, the Kohyun Korean Paper Center so far has held 9 exhibitions of which 2 invitational and 7 member's since 2006 under the title 'Korean Paper in Daily Life'. Jung also is the CEO of Kohyun Gallery located in Haeundae District, Busan. She has participated in various exhibitions home and abroad more than 90 times and won 30 prizes. "Korean paper is not my major but I came to know about the world from an acquaintance and I fell in love with it. I was particularly drawn to the fact that it can be used in daily life with various purposes either for gift or decoration or even practical use. It also weighs light which makes us carry without a hassle." In an effort to spread the beauty of the Korean paper craft, Jung has been actively engaged in giving lectures at universities and culture centers and fostered talented students with which she established the Kokyun Korean Paper Research Center. The number of students now has reached 25. In recognition of her achievements, Jung was appointed as a master Korean paper crafter by Busan in June 2016. "It is regretful though that the traditional Korean crafts are not as much recognized in Korea as are in overseas. So I'm publishing related books on a regular basis to spread the beauty and excellence of the Korean paper craft" said Jung and added that she would keep introducing more creative Korean paper works. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
