Introducing a child psychotherapist
Counseling Psychology Research Center for Children (Director Eom Gwan-yong)
Customized counseling

Mental disease is rising as a social problem due to ever heated up competition and flood of media in our modern society. This is intensified by an increasing number of single parent household and working couple with their children likely to fall victim to mental instability. Located in Cheonan City, Counseling Psychology Research Center for Children provides general analysis on mental status of children and youth and solutions based on play-therapy. The counseling starts from diagnosis and moves on to general psychological test and to bringing up appropriate solutions at the final stage. Director Eom Gwan-yong of the center said “Children and youth are in the phase to form their self-consciousness which is a very important phase of their life. But many of them today suffer from disorders relating to cognition, affection and behavior due to the current diversified social structure and competitive growing environment.” For this, Eom uses ‘play psychotherapy’. It provides a customized play to children according to their mental and psychological state and it helps them express their emotion. “Because children still lack in conversation skill, the treatment through a dialogue is not that effective while a play can approach them in a more friendly term and draws out their inner feeling effectively” said Eom.

Honesty and professionalism
The programs of Counseling Psychology Research Center for Children include speech therapy, cognitive learning therapy, cooking therapy and ‘sand play therapy’ developed based on Jungian psychology. The latter is known to be effective as children can express their feeling by making a certain shape with the sand. And it not only helps children improve their psychological conditions but also develop their creativity. “The tender touch of the sand gives children a sense of satisfaction and an ease to their emotion and it also plays its role of the medium that connects the inner world to outer world. When children break down the shape they made with the sand, the destructive action releases their negative emotion buried inside them so that it can make a space for more positive emotion. Counseling Psychology Research Center for Children was registered to the Korean Association for Play Therapy in December 2016 and the director Eom was appointed as an infant mentor of EBS Child Rearing Class Pin in the category of counseling psychology last January. The program invites specialists of various fields to give solutions to mental and psychology issues and Eom takes charge in stress, depression and emotional problems. “The most important thing in counseling is to listen carefully to their story and be closer to them as an honest friend in open-mindedness. Through this, we can bring up an effective solution” said Eom. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
