4 times nutritional contents than a fruit body

Mushroom is categorized as ‘fruit body’ and ‘hypha’. The former is the part that exposed to the surface and most mushrooms we see is belong to this. The latter on the other hand is the part hidden underground and it grows to be the former through the light, temperature and chemical reaction. Functionally, fruit body actually is a generative organ while the energy comes from hypha which keeps nutritional contents. Because it is hidden underground, it has been rare to be made use of by people. But the recent spread of its medicinal effect is encouraging people to experiment the substances. Located in Cheonan City, Giunchan is a company that developed food additives by using complex mushroom mycelia. What stands out Giunchan from the rivals is that its ‘complex culture technique’ used to cultivate medicinal mushrooms on other grain fields and it can maximize nutritional contents. CEO Park Jong-rye of Giunchan said “The existing mushroom cultivation normally took 5~20 years and it was expensive and difficult to extract. But the complex mushroom mycelia developed by our patented technology has enabled growers to grow it in a short period of time and made the extract method simpler while keeping the medicinal substances intact in the mushrooms.” Among many products of Giunchan, ‘The Chaga Embracing the Mushroom’ is most popular. It is made into a powder product for easy use and can be added to various foods such as yogurt, cereal, rice, meat and fish. Chaga mushroom grows on the sap of a tree and is rich in Beta-glucan, AHCC and antioxidant enzyme which is good for immunity and cancer. Due to this medicinal effect, it is officially recognized as cancer cure in Russia. 

Contributing to raising public health
Park said “I became interested in chaga mushroom because of my diabetic mother. Back then, it was imported from Russia and Finland and made me hard to get hold of it in the market and it was expensive. So I gathered like-minded nutritionists to cultivate mushroom mycelia. We made samples and established Giunchan when we thought we were ready.” Park and his team carried out their research 2 more years after launching the company and released and distributed its first product ‘The Chaga Embracing the Mushroom Rice’ to schools. It was followed by the stick-type product ‘The Chaga Embracing the Mushroom’ and other products relating to pork and duck food in cooperation with NongHyup Safe Livestock Brands. Giunchan obtained a patent for Beta-glucan accommodation method, an ISO certificate and a venture enterprise certificate. The company also was chosen as a partner of KITECH in recognition of its advanced technology in the field. According to the Korea Analytical Technique Research Institute, the complex mushroom mycelia, developed by Giunchan, contains 128.2 mg/g Beta-glucan which is much higher than other rival products. Also, the team of biotechnology professor Nam Gung-woo of Soon Chun Hyang University recently found out that the higher the concentration of hypha the slower the proliferation of cancer cell. “Health undoubted is the word for the coming age of homo-hundred. And strengthening immunity system, I think, is the first step to take and our products can certainly give a help for that. We are proud of what we have developed and what we are going to and we will keep doing our best so that more people can benefit from our products” said Park. For this, Giunchan has already started its project to secure distribution channels on/off line including nationwide distribution network and more details of the project are found at its website. Meanwhile, Park is serving as chief director of Cheonan School Feeding Cooperatives and as the first chairman of Cheonan-si Boccia Federation for the Disabled while running CHINHWANKYUNG NFS, a school feeding supplier, at the same time.
