No to dog factory!
Interview with the farmer Lee Gyeong-min of Jeongeup Pet Dog Complex
Pet dog’s welfare is more important than making profits
Advanced county-level management in temperature, moisture and ventilation

People were shocked by the reality of ‘dog factory’ revealed in the program ‘TV Animal Farm’ last year. But not every farmer is as cruel as those. The farmers in Jeongeup Pet Dog Complex are a good example. The complex has a large space, clean environment, and clean water and dog food. All the farmers in the complex values happiness of dogs more than anything else. The complex boasts the system developed by themselves after 20 years of research and provides advanced management in temperature, moisture and ventilation like the US and Japan. It is regarded as the best in Korea in terms of its advanced system. Even pet dog specialists are liberal with their praise to the complex.

‘Hygiene’ is the philosophy of the owner farmer Lee Gyeong-min (29). He cleans the complex with water on a daily basis. Instead of using steel-bars, Lee uses compartments erected on the earthen floor for more space. He lets puppies to be raised by their mothers and monitors the complex with CCTV to prevent any unexpected accident. In fact, there almost is no smell and dogs are really healthy in the complex. The industry recognizes dogs raised in the complex with more credit for this reason.

The success of the complex attributed to 20 years of knowhow of Kim Chul-gyu (64) who is the founder, and served as the president, of Pet Animal Producer Association. Kim has his motto ‘Animal-centered Management’ and has carried out researches for many years. Lee and Park Sang-gwon (40) had the same mind like Kim and they opened the complex (3,305 square meters) in Wonpyeong-ri, Geumsan-myeon, Gimje City 3 years ago. Kim is called as ‘mentor’ by other farmers and he is actively delivering his knowhow to young generations.

Lee thinks that the three of them are playing the role of helping and monitoring each other. For this reason, any malpractice or illegal activities are hard to find in the complex. They are also against artificial insemination, illegal cesarean, and packed breeding farms in an effort to create a healthy breeding environment despite the less productivity it might bring.

Lee was also shocked by the ‘dog factory’ broadcast on TV. “It was appalling that they practiced non-professional cesarean and artificial insemination and the farms were really dirty. It means that they just see animals as money.” But the reveal is still impacting the industry as whole due to the intensified public distrust.

About 30% of pet animal farms including Jeongeup Pet Dog Complex are illegally operating in Korea. “We are suffering from lack of government support but we are determined to set up a role model in the industry.” <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
