“A great musician should know how to break the norm and how to make audience feel 1 hour performance as 1 minute”
Guest Prof Jeong Gun-young of University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna
Korea’s first endorser of ‘Ludwig-Musser’

Jeong won the first prize at Austria Percussion Competition in 2004 and has played at Korea/Austria Philharmonic Orchestra, Anton Webern Orchestra, Shoenbruoen Opera House, Sejong Center for the Performing Arts and Seoul Arts Center. He is a professor of Prayner Konservatorium in Austria and is the fastest percussionist in the world for he beats 1,300 times a minute. He entered University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna in 2001 and studied marimba, bongo, timbales, xylophone, vibraphone and timpani for 9 years. Graduating in 2010 as the youngest Asian, he was offered a guest professor position by the same university. Jeong has wide knowledge in western music, literature and philosophy and has traveled between Austria and Korea for 16 years to give performance. He is also the first Korean endorser of ‘Ludwig-Musser’, a globally renowned percussion maker, as a timpani artist and listed his name in Andvision, a Japanese classical artist consulting network. According to Jeong, study on philosophy and self-awareness is needed for a musician to deliver his truthfulness to audience like the European artistic circles have practiced for hundreds years as a tradition. In other words, technique alone cannot draw communication and sympathy from the audience, which is rather common in the current Korean music world, but understanding of the music he creates.

Building a platform for percussionists and a network for public participation
For the last 10 years, Jeong has exerted his effort in building a network through which he can communicate with global musicians and is working on ways to share it with children musicians in Korea. Jeong said that he could make a good harmony with various genres such as children’s song, pop music and OST as a way to approach to the public. Despite his mother and daughter having lived in Austria for a long time, Jeong is preparing to move the base to Korea in order to make a channel for Korean musicians to exchange music with Austrian musicians. Singing a MOU between universities of each country might be a good idea to start with, according to Jeong. Especially, Jeong’s love of children musicians is great that he willingly takes part in an improvisation on a lawn alongside children. This is because he remembers the explosive response the children showed to his arrangement on a children’s song and a pop music before. “I’ve written many of transcendental pieces so far but I’m thinking of writing more popular songs and movie or drama OST as I want to engage more with the public and especially children” said Jeong. However, Jeong’s versatility is not only bounded in music only but is reaching as far as mobile application. With his wireless effect app called ‘RemoFinger G’, he is preparing for cooperation with WIFO Corporation, a Korean IT startup, to knock the markets of both domestic and global markets from March this year. The app can realize the sound of drum, xylophone and vibraphone through midi, DDR and stick & pedal. It is interesting to know that he also has talent in writing as he has published an essay <Living and Loving with Music> and a children’s story <Dad, I Want to Have Mozart Chocolate!>. Power Korea sends a message of support.
