[ART] Artist Geumdang Lee Tae-hee
of Garamdangmeok Muninhwa Research Center

“Muninhwa is my life and the way of learning”
25 years of passion in ‘muninhwa’ –
Korean painting enjoyed by scholars in olden times

Artist Geumdang Lee Tae-hee is running Garamdangmeok Muninhwa Research Center in Jecheon City. She grew her interest in painting since she was very young and came to know about ‘muninhwa’ by chance through calligraphy. And the chance made her pushing forward her passion in the genre for over 25 years. Of all those years of developing her style from calligraphy to this traditional Korean painting genre, ‘muninhwa’ has been her life and the way of learning. She has given much of her effort in the Four Gracious Plants (plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo). Plum bursting up first to let the world know spring has come, orchid spreading its scent far out over the woods and the mountains, chrysanthemum blooming against the first chill of the winter and bamboo being evergreen, are interpreted by Korean people as symbols of noblemen (the gracious). Drawing these Four Gracious Plants, Lee says, brings her peace and a zeal for life.

Painting trains one’s mind for new, open and sharing
Lee’s works reflect her self-image. Whenever she puts up a brush and gives a stroke, she feels her mind refreshed. “I’m still not satisfied about the way I execute plum and bamboo though they are known to be really hard to be completed in perfection. Yet I’m just into it for they have classical grace and dignity and calm and soothing colors” said Lee. She might try to be humble by saying that but she actually received a prize of excellence at The Korea Calligraphy Exhibition. And this might be a result of her endless love of ‘mogol method (brushing objects without outline)’ and ‘guruk method (opposite of the former)’ in ‘muninhwa’. Also, keeping her own style might have played an important part for being frequently invited to a number of national exhibitions. Meanwhile, she is actively putting her good will of helping others in practice; she is teaching ‘muninhwa’ at various community and welfare centers. “I was worried at first whether they might lose interest sooner than I expected. So I devised an effective method that can keep their interest at bay by giving a simple homework. I now feel really rewarded by seeing them paying more concentration and a sense of achievement on their work than I expected” said Lee.

Everything depends on the mind
Lee is so busily engaged in creating her own work and teaching members of Garamdangmeok Muninhwa Research Center. This busyness is furthered enhanced by her research on materials for inspiration and exploring as many exhibitions and nature as possible. In addition, she currently is taking a course of Korean language and literature of a cyber university. “It’s not easy to learn something in one’s old age but the members of the center have given me a lot of encouragement. After all, I believe that everything depends on the mind” said Lee adding “I’d like to show my gratitude to those who always supported me especially my husband and the children as well as my teachers and the members of the center.” <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
