[Art] Artist Hong Sun-mi
“I paint like writing a poem about our inner side”
Catching daily moments for a new point of view

One day in summer when the rain pouring down, I was running at the crossroad of Indeogwon. The raindrops distorted the world but I felt them like the scorching heat in the desert. I couldn’t see the sun because of the rain but the fact was that it still shot its ray to us. And I embraced the sun into my heart. – Artist note –
‘Cars’ that delivers importance of human relationship
“Where am I running and what for now?” We sometimes throw a question like this. People drive a car to meet friend, family, lover, boss and all those we need to meet. And we arrive at the last stop called ‘meeting’. For artist Hong Sun-mi, this meeting is ‘continuity of facing each other in life’. And she demonstrated it in her work ‘Running to the Sun’. The cars in Hong’s works are our families, friends and neighbors. By extension, they are the people of the world and the breath of life. A lot of emotions like envy, jealousy, greed, doubt, desire, love, understanding, service, hope.. are struggling inside of cars. But over the meeting between people lies a meeting with the God. For this reason, Hong is not that interested in making her work pretty but presents our languishment, stress and pain in the way to joy. “People in cars drive towards their destiny in reality but they drive to tell their stories for communication in my works. Human relationship starts from meeting and talking and we want to untangle the stories in throbbing heart” said Hong. Hong used to paint trees and water to sing the hope of life. ‘In the Warm Sunlit Forest’, ‘The Dream of Aegean Sea’, ‘Path in a Grand Park’, ‘Passion’ and ‘The Way to Seonun Temple’ are good examples and these works became the nourishment of the works today that value human relationship.

From works of hope themed on nature
To works of inner side of human like poems

Hong wanted to be many people when she grew up: film director, scenario writer, artist, space scientist and actor. But being an artist came to the center stage due to the influence of her father who wanted to be an artist but had to give up his dream in facing of the Liberation and the Korean War. Yet he used Hong as his model for his picture in an effort to keep a thread of his dream. “I imagined to be the God that controls the sunset in the the sky when I was a teenager. It made me to take up a brush to paint the sunset and a deer on a canvas. But my imagination didn’t last long and I led a normal life like marrying a husband and have a baby. Then I came to know a drawing club by chance and started to resume my passion in painting” said Hong in retrospect. Hong has sensitivity like The Little Prince which helped her creative zeal throughout and from 2010 she started to give a meaning to each object of her painting in depth. She expressed objects or movements on the canvas like a poet or turned non-human like objects like human as in the methods of writing a poem. She exposed inner side of a man like giving a storytelling in reddish colors. The good example work is ‘Lover Hurts’.

‘Miinheo’ functions as a spring board…
“I will continue my work and prepare for solo exhibition”

The virtue that has pushed Hong as far as today is ‘diligence’. “I’ve led my life with painting for the last 10 years but I feel like I’ve just started now” said Hong. Hong said that she never skipped a class at Hongik Institute of Continuing Education for Culture and the Arts for the last 11 years except on the day of her daughter’s College Scholastic Ability Test. “It has never been easy to lead a life as an artist which is very different from normal people. But I get surprised myself at the fact that I’ve done as far as today with much pleasure and I feel really thankful to my family” said Hong. Being active as a member of ‘Miinheo’ especially has been a spring board for Hong to keep carrying on her career as an artist. She is also a member of Seongnam Art Association and currently is planning a solo exhibition under the title ‘Running to the Sun’. With her deep contemplation in cars, Hong is to use her poetic influence of The Little Prince and the poet Park In-hwan’s ‘Wooden Horse and Lady’ for the coming solo exhibition. Song, who also is a nurse-teacher of an elementary school, said that she greets children with smile. “Every day for me is like a white canvas. An artist is like a cook who cooks life instead of food and I think all of us are cooks who cook every single day.” <Power Korea> wishes Hong a great success of her coming exhibition.
