World’s first ‘electric vehicle safety evaluation device’

The climate change on earth has prompted the leaders of the world to bring up measures and has drawn a significant result for them to sign the Paris Agreement. Among many factors, the vehicle exhaust was appointed as one of the main contributors and the world is exerting its effort in spreading electric cars instead. The problems however are lack of EV charging stations, limited battery technology and expensive price. Many companies and research centers are trying to improve batter performance but the tests and evaluations on the batteries have not yet recognized as creditable. In this situation, CTI Korea’s introduction of the world’s first ‘electric vehicle safety evaluation device’ is but such a great feat. The device was developed in cooperation with Korea Electrical Safety Corporation and it can measure electric insulation and continuity syntagmatically. The measuring range is up to 1,000V which makes the test possible even for a large hydride battery vehicle. The device only costs around 8 million won, a very competitive price considering its functions, and is provided in two types: handy type and bench type (for regular check-up). To diversify the product lines, CTI Korea currently is developing mini type devices for instant check-up on site. CEO Chae said “The batteries of EV are 300V/200V which is high voltage and current so a safety evaluation is a must to prevent any possible accident. But the existing devices cost too much and the evaluations are not that accurate especially in the battery part. CTI Korea was chosen for a national project of the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning in 2012 and has carried out R&D ever since to finally develop the device that satisfies the Korean electric vehicle standard WP29.” He added that the company has done registration of patent and technology transfer and obtained related certificates.

Proudly spreading ‘Made in Korea’
CTI Korea was established in 1998. It opened an affiliated research center in 2011 and was approved as a venture enterprise in 2012 and was chosen for ‘Leap Forward Task Company’ of the Small and Medium Business Administration. Its 19 years of expertise in the field of precision measurement has provided cutting edge solutions and devices to companies, research centers and schools. Especially, the development of the world’s first ‘electric vehicle safety evaluation device’ has brought a global level recognition to the company and has made a spring board for Korean electric vehicle industry to go global. Chae said “Compared to the growth of the global electric vehicle market, Korea still is in its infancy: lack of charging stations, double the price of diesels but poor mileage. A report says that about 10,000 electric cars (160,000 green cars as of 2015) were sold in Korea and the development of related technologies are still rather slow.” Building the infrastructure and encouraging environment therefore is a must. Meanwhile, CIT Korea has completed development of BPMS. With these two developments as a foundation, Chae is ambitious to grow the company as a small but strong automobile solutions company.
