Praising the cycle of nature, drawing the life
that resembles the face of a flower
Artist Choi Song-dae
From the seed to blossom, life circulates itself

It is said that our power of imagination can express the four phases of life (birth, old age, sickness and death) with a flower. While the Korean art world goes round abstract and realism, artist Choi Song-dae pushes herself to a constant change in subjects and methods through observing the things and nature around her with keen eye. Choi exerted her artistic zeal for realistic figurative art in her 40s and abstract form of human body in her 50s before she started to turn the courses of creation from 1990 to the series work <Images of the Energy of Life> with flowers being the main theme. Flowers in her works sometimes crossed over with other objects with different focus and othertimes dimly covered like smoke on a black background to symbolize a limitless energy towards life. Choi prefers three-dimensional picture to perspective and gives hyperrealistic closeup with out of focus to create a hypnotic atmosphere. The flower then emits strong energy of its soul and melody with a sound of praise and awe. This of her style was developed to another series work <The Energy of Life: Scent> in the middle of 2000. Choi pays a particular focus on a stamen and a pistil of a flower or a flower and its seed and combine the two different properties for a work. One might find a mixed feeling of realism, abstract, non-figurative and the formalism of Bauhaus in Choi's works while her recent works are more related to powdered pigments or stone pigments of delicate oriental lines and colors in order to express the cycle of life and its energy and value.

Trying something new to create something new each time
Choi holds one solo exhibition and participates ten group exhibitions a year. To keep pushing forward her creative zeal, Choi uses more healthy ways to keep her body fit instead of depending on medicine or health food she took in the past. Choi's once 17 hours of work a day was encouraged by the saying of Brancusi "Create like a god, command like a king, work like a slave" and the passion is still ongoing for international art fairs which she ceased to participate after 65 of her age. She gives thousands of strokes of brush in order to gain the desired texture and colors as she is an ardent believer of hard work for creation of a good work. If <Kite Series> of distanced pond, lotus leaf and flowers in realistic expression was her style in the 90s, the series <Image of Life, the Four Phases of Life> today closes up the seeds in the aligned lotus pips like LED lights. Choi strengthens the presence of the overlapped objects such as flowers, birds and man to show her respect. She once was influenced by Egyptian mural, another time from exotic Indian art and also from Korean papers for the making of various poses of a man. Many of her works of human faces now have turned to faces of flowers. 'Extinction for reborn' is the very idea of Choi. The energy of life originates from the movement of the cycle and it always has been the driving force for more than 70 years that has made her grab her brush again, Choi says. <Power Korea> wishes Choi a good health and abundance in creation in 2017.
