Spreading excellence of Korean alphabet to the world
Sim Ui-do, President of Headquarters of Globalization Movement of Korean Alphabet, Founder and Chief Director of Hwasan Middle School

47 years of the movement goes to New York
Having dedicated his life to spreading excellence of Korean alphabet to the world, Sim, the president of the Headquarters of Globalization Movement of Korean Alphabet, won The Korea Master Awards in the category of the master educator last year and attended 'Global Korean Language Declaration Ceremony' and 'Celebration of The 47th Anniversary of Global Korean Language' held in New York. He founded Hwasan Gongmin High School in a backwood with a debt of 1,200 rice bags in 1963 and started the movement when the school obtained authorization as Hwasan Middle School from the government in 1969. Aged only 28, he became the youngest principal in Korea. He met Don Dilts of US Peace Corps and was encouraged to raise national pride of Korea. He chewed over the lesson of elders "If we keep our language, the citizens of the world one day would pay a tribute to Korea". He then founded the Headquarters of Globalization Movement of Korean Alphabet and has made Korean as an official language of more than 11 countries in the world. Though unofficial, 200,000 people are estimated to be permanent members of the headquarters. He opened a Korean school in Colombo, Sri Lanka and signed a business agreement with the Sri Lankan Minister of Education to teach Korean in 2,000 elementary and middle and high schools as a second language. He also published a biography of a president of Kazakhstan in Korean to be used as a textbook in universities. The KBC New York introduced the headquarters once and Sim signed a MoU with Korean American Heritage Foundation (president Choi Gyeong-mi) to foster Korean language teachers in an effort to make Korean a second language at schools in New York. On 10th October 2016 at New York Geumgang Hall, Sim gave a congratulatory speech to celebrate Korean language being chosen as a second language and said that he would spread excellence of Korean alphabet and culture to the world.

Commemorative Speech of Sim Ui-do for Global Korean Language Vision Proclamation Ceremony and The 47th Anniversary of Global Korean Language

On this day in full of glory and bless, respectable president of Korean American Heritage Foundation Choi Gyeong-mi, the representative of Korean societies and the people here today in this place, I greet you all with warm and exciting heart. Here, at this very moment in Geumgang Hall in New York, the bud of Korean language is coming into flower. And a new history is being written. 47 years ago in 1969 at Republe High School in New York, I said that Korean language would be a global language after 50 years. I am not a prophet but because there is no language more excellent than Korean in the world.

Also, 47 years ago, I had a debate with 6 US scholars on whether Korean is better than English. We were given 10 minutes each but it took 120 minutes for the 6 scholars to tell their opinions due to an interpretation issue. They argued that English has cursive letter, block letter, lower case and upper case and uses proper noun or pronoun with upper case as an advantage against Korean. I argued back that if A in English sounds ei, ə, ɑ́: and ɔ: and more, each of Korean alphabet has just one sound. Also, the cursive letter and block letter in English makes writing the words 4 times less in speed than Korean does where "o" is just written as "o". In conclusion, English is 8 times slower than Korean and it cannot be a match. When I finished my argument, the 6 scholars showed their consent in applauds. At The World Alphabet Olympics held at Bangkok, Thailand on 1st ~ 3rd October 2016, Korean won the gold medal for 2 times in a row followed by Indian in silver and English in bronze despite there was not a single Korean judge. The report that Korean is 7 or 8 times faster than English also made my heart excited one more time. Be it happened by chance of inevitability, my prediction 47 years ago that Korean would be a global language has become real. It is marvelous to know today that Korean is taught at schools in New York, the heart of the world. I feel really excited and emotional that Korean was chosen as the official second language in New York, beating Germany, French, Japanese, Spanish and Chinese. I would like to say that it was the result of Choi's years of passion and effort as well as yours all here today. I would like to show my respect and admiration and give enthusiastic applauds to you all from the bottom of my heart. The Global Korean Language Movement is a project for the citizens of the world with which they can communicate each other faster and easier and make the world a better place like heaven on earth. How difficult it might sound? But let us march forward to it with duty, conviction and can-do-spirit. Today is the day to let the world know that our declaration to make Korean language global is an event that will mark a chapter of world history where all mankind would have to join. I ask you here today, therefore, to do your best in spreading excellence of Korean alphabet to the world and to encourage the citizens of the world to join the movement so that people of the world unite in one language for faster and easier communication. Lastly, I sincerely wish you and your family happiness and bless. Thank you very much for your listening.

The Headquarters of Globalization Movement of Korean Alphabet currently is waiting for an approval for a corporation from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Sim is actively pushing forward a variety of cultural and social projects alongside the movement.
