Artist Udang Sohn Jung-sook
'The Beauty of Flame' burns the soul of art!
The zeal to recover humanity

"The lines in my paining is the resonance of silence and the meaning of my life. The images and phenomena are the transition from all universal and realistic forms to unrealistic forms; that is related to the creation of the university which keeps the secret of all living things; it is the dynamic and abstract expression of rhythmical movement and circulation of vitality of that mysterious and primitive life." <artist's note>

'The Beauty of Flame' takes the center stage of art world
Abstract is the world of imagination and conception. As an abstract artist, Sohn has exerted her artistic zeal in visualizing an absolute world of beauty. She made her name recognized in the art world with the layout of rough images and dynamic colors at the initial phase of her career as an artist. Her works are not categorized in either oriental or western but her own style.

With even black, white and red only, she delivers wriggling and vibrating forms on a canvas. She plans the canvas boldly and straightforwardly. The colors give a sense of heaviness and fill, compose and divides the space to create primitive images. The images are not detailed but more like the texture of liquid and jelly, vibrating and delicate. She does not recover something that exist outside but creates a certain look by filling up the canvas with paints. The work does not seem to be completed as the final stage of creation but gives something strong and similarity which might came from her bullfighter trait hidden deep down in her.

"The meaning of my life and the soul of my art world are all present in my works. And my works express the harmony between energies and the flow of time and space. I weave the cycle of yin and yang, life and death, order and destruction, beauty and ugly, construction and deconstruction into one abstract image."

Study on 'the origin of the universe'
The theme that penetrates throughout Sohn's works is 'The Beauty of Flame'. Sohn does not draw the flame literally but she means it to speak for her art world. The titles of 'The Beauty of Flame' series show her personality and philosophy very well: Ego Spoutism II, Dream, Mythology, I Love You, Auto Expression, The Fantasism and The Eternal Desire II.

Some of her works also create a wavelength that can make the appreciator conjure up certain things or images: Flickering Candlelight, Burning Flame, Unknown Organism, Certain Wriggling, Energy From Inner Sider to Heart. The calligraphic doodling, short yet continued lines, writing and drawing and simple stroking in her works also are making some kind of illusion. Her signature ¼ÕÁ¤¼÷ (Sohn Jung-sook) on each of her work, in addition, mingles well with those wriggly lines. One might think it a caligraphy painting.
"I started painting because I like colors" says Sohn. She used blue, red, yellow, white and black which are connected to the Five Elements (metal, wood, water, fire, earth). She wrote in her note "Black is the resonance of silence and the meaning of life" and she said that she was charmed by 'dark red' as if her soul was absorbed into.

Raising public awareness on alienation
Sohn graduated from Ewha Womans University and carried on her study at Madrid University College of Art, Spain. She has held 13 solo exhibitions and participated in an exhibition at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul, Korea), The 5 Modern Korean Artists Exhibition (Russia), Solon Jwejia (Paris, France), The International Exchange Exhibition of 15 Modern Artists (Fukuoka, Japan), The Vietnamese Government Invitational Exhibition of Modern Art (Hanoi), The Indian Government Invitational Exhibition of Modern Art (National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi), The Mongolian Invitational Exhibition Ulaanbaatar (Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery), International Seorak Biennale (Sokcho, Korea) and 2002 World Cup Invitational Exhibition (Tokyo, Japan).

We can feel a free soul and passion from Sohn. But it does not mean that she once has lost her balance. Her image of the young girl in her 20s is well matched her liking of the heavy metal band Dio. She likes reading 'Islands', the essay written by the French novelist and philosopher Jean Grenier, and wearing black apparel which is her trade mark. Black can give an impression of easiness and one's steadfastness.

Today, if we can put that way, is the age of alienation. Alienation of human, alienation of labor and alienation of main agent. Mass media seems to push the people into the dead end. The role of artists that can raise public awareness on alienation, therefore, is much needed more than ever. In this respect, we can be bold to say that the insightful works of artist Sohn Jung-sook must go on as long as her energy allows in a way of creating a better society and a better world.
