아이들의 정서발달에 도움 주는 ‘숲유치원’ 도입해

우리의 미래를 키워가는 영․유아교육의 중요성은 이루 말할 필요가 없다. 그러나 최근 많은 유치원들이 주입식 교육과정과 유치원 선생님의 부족 현상 등으로 제 역할을 다하지 못하고 있는 경우가 많아 일각에서는 우려의 목소리가 매우 큰 상황이다. 이러한 상황 속에서 아이들의 주체성을 키워주고 창의력 발달을 위한 ‘하브루타 교육’을 도입해 학부모들로부터 호응을 얻고 있는 인천의 정원유치원이 주목받고 있다.

교사와 유아, 부모의 소통이 이루어지는 ‘하브루타’ 교육의 산실
인천시 계양구에 위치한 정원유치원은 ‘활동하는 새싹, 행복한 새싹, 연구하는 정원사, 격려하는 학부모’라는 원훈 아래 교사와 유아의 소통이 이루어지는 하브루타식 교육을 도입해 아이들의 창의력을 이끌어내는 유치원이다. 지난 1987년 설립되어 올해로 30년 동안 아이들을 키워가고 있는 정원유치원은 김은주 원장의 지도 아래 아이들의 표현방식을 존중하며 이끌어 주는 교육을 진행하고 있다.

‘하브루타’는 유대어 ‘하베르(친구)’에서 파생된 단어로, 파트너와 대화하고 소통하며 협력을 키워갈 수 있어 두뇌계발과 가정교육에도 큰 영향을 미치고 있는 교육법이다. 하브루타 교육을 통해 정원유치원의 아이들은 소통과 경청의 힘을 기름으로써 설득하는 능력을 갖게 되고, 나와 다른 친구들의 의견이 다름을 알고 인정하며 다양한 생각과 사고를 할 수 있는 힘을 기르게 된다. 또한 짝 하브루타, 모듬 하브루타, 전체 하브루타의 순서로 방법을 익혀 교육을 진행할 뿐 아니라 이를 가정에까지 연계하여 부모들에게 하브루타를 알려주고 ‘가족과 함께해요’ 활동의 결과를 유치원에서 발표하는 식으로 구성되어 있다.

김 원장은 “정원유치원에서는 ‘우리들의 축제’라는 이름으로 시장놀이를 통해 경제관념을 익히게 하고, 먹거리 장터를 열어 아이들이 만든 음식을 부모님께 대접하게 하는 등 다양한 체험학습을 추구하고 있다. 또 수업 중에 생각나는 것들을 글이나 그림으로 표현하게 해 7세 아이들이 졸업할 때 ‘우리들의 이야기’라는 이름의 문집으로 엮어내고 있다. 이러한 활동들 덕분에 부모님들 사이에서는 저희 유치원의 교육과정이 호응을 얻고 있다”라고 말했다.

아이들의 성품교육에 힘써 건강한 미래 만들어가
정원유치원은 또한 아이들의 정서와 집중력, 신체발달에 큰 효과를 보이고 있는 ‘숲유치원’을 교육과정에 적극 도입했다. 유럽 등 선진국에서 아이들의 자립심과 집중력을 키우는 장점으로 널리 알려진 숲유치원 교육은 기반시설 조성의 어려움 탓에 우리나라에서는 대중적으로 알려지지 못했던 것이 사실이다. 하지만 정원유치원은 60여 종의 야생화가 심어진 정원을 따라 자연과 호흡하며 주1회 관찰일기를 쓰고, 채소나 과일 등을 직접 먹어보기도 하는 등 다양한 체험을 아이들에게 제공하고 있다. 그 덕분인지 정원유치원의 아이들은 적극적이고 표현을 많이 하는 건강한 아이로 성장하게 된다고 한다.

정원유치원은 하브루타 교육의 기반 위에 아이들의 성품교육에도 힘쓰며, 밝고 건강하며 올바른 아이로 성장할 수 있도록 돕는 데 최선을 다하고 있다. 김 원장은 한편으로 영·유아 교육이 바로 서기 위해선 정부 차원에서의 노력이 필요하다고 당부했다. 그는 “현재 저처럼 유치원 교사부터 시작해 유치원을 운영하고 계신 대부분의 원장님들은 어려움을 겪고 있습니다. 정부에서는 ‘교육’ 그 자체보다는 유치원 운영에 더욱 포커스를 맞추고 있으며, 이에  공립유치원이 아니고서는 대부분 사립유치원 원장부터가 행정적인 부분에 치중하느라 정작 교육에 소홀해질 수밖에 없는 것이 사실입니다”라며, “아이들의 미래를 위한 교육에 더욱 집중할 수 있도록 정부에서도 사립유치원의 특수성을 고려한 교육정책을 펴주시길 부탁드립니다”라고 강조했다.

The 'forest kindergarten education' helps develop children's independence and concentration
'Havruta' connects children, teachers and parents
Jungwon Kindergarten is in Gyeyang District, Incheon. Under the education slogan 'Active Children, Happy Children, Diligent Gardeners, Encouraging Parents', Jungwon Kindergarten is effectively promoting creativity of children through Havruta, a Jewish education method. Since its establishment in 1987, the director Kim Eun-ju has valued the way children express and exchange their opinions more than anything else. The root meaning of the Aramaic word havruta is 'friend'. It is an ancient Jewish teaching method where two partners interpret the meaning of a biblical text in a dialogue with one another. It is known to be effective for developing brain and domestic upbringing. Director Kim has witnessed children grow their ability in listening to others and exchanging opinions of each other more effectively through Havruta, thus obtaining power of persuasion. Kim put the Havruta method in order from Pair Havruta to Assorted Harvruta to Whole Harvruta. The method is clearly explained to parents and a session between children and parents are then demonstrated on 'Family Day'. "'Our Festival', a market play, also is very popular as children can be able to understand about economy and parents are invited to taste the food the children made. 'Our Story', on the other hand, promotes children's ability in writing and drawing which are then made into an anthology to be given to them when they graduate at 7. I'm confident to say that our teaching methods and programs are receiving excellent feedback" asserted Kim.

Jungwon Kindergarten's 'forest kindergarten education' is well known to be an effective way to develop children's independence and concentration. The method is widely practiced in Europe though still less known in Korea. What makes Jungwon Kindergarten more charming though is its garden. 60 kinds of wild flowers are greeting children with the best smile and scent they can show off and the charmed children then are encouraged to write a diary of their observation every week. In order not to make a variety of vegetables and fruits jealous, children do not forget to enjoy the freshest taste they offer. As a result, children of Jungwon Kindergarten express themselves very well without a reserve and grow healthily. Jungwon Kindergarten's personality education also cannot be missed as it effectively teach children the way they consider others. However, Kim is regretful about lack of government support. "Many directors of kindergartens, I believe, might have started the business with passion in children's education. And I have witnessed many of them rather grew disappointed as time goes by. The Education Office tend to give more focus on 'operation' than 'education' so the directors of specially private kindergartens have to spend a great deal of time in administration. So I ask the Education Office to bring up more effective measures for private kindergartens." <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
