Jeju Self-Employed Association takes the first step
Lee Yu-Geun, the president of Jeju Self-Employed Association

Promoting communication and harmony of 200,000 self-employed in Jeju

There is nothing new about the media saying that self-employed are in crisis.  According to Statistics Korea, the total number of self-employed in Korea in 2015 was 6.7 million, a 2.2% decrease on previous year due to economic recession and overheated competition. 7 out of 10 of them closed down their business within 5 years nationwide except Jeju Island thanks to the increasing number of Chinese tourists and a boom in rural life. A report says that there are 118,500 self-employed in Jeju, about 200,000 when added SMEs and startups. It takes up 33% as a percentage of 620,000 populations in the island. It is also a significant advance considering the fact that the tourism and service industries used to play the main role. The question remains, however, whether the profits made by this rising industry actually benefit the residents as a whole. The foreign investment, made mainly by the Chinese, seems to leak back out of the island and there needs to be a certain measure to protect the rights and interests of self-employed in Jeju. Thus born was Jeju Self-Employed Association with its goal to consolidate self-employed in the island and to put in practice community services. The president of the association Lee Yu-Geun said “Jeju is in the period of transition at the moment with many development projects and their side effects happening simultaneously. A lot of goods, capitals and people are flooding into the island and it’s changing the landscape. The important thing therefore is how effectively we can deal with this.” “We will closely work together to make a better Jeju”

Large cities like Busan, Incheon and Daegu have seen a rapid decline of the number of self-employed; 5.9%, 7.2%, 2.8% respectively due to lack of preparation and excessive competition according to specialists. The first vice president Kang Jung-Ae said “Therefore, we will first of all encourage our members to actively participate in various festivals both home and international by using our network and will publish an in-house magazine to provide business information and strategic marketing tools. We will also carry out training for management, marketing and creating new type of business while supporting cooperation and partnership between the members as well as scholarship for the children of the members in financial difficulty and community services home and abroad.” The vice president and the secretary general of the association Go Yun-Gwon said “Active participation of the members is as vital as the association making a one unified voice for common interests. We also need to prepare for the ever growing local economy both in number of facilities and systems. One cannot do it alone but we can do it together.” Lee added “Many people in many areas have given us a helping hand to launch the association. We are really grateful to them all and it is now our job to actively promote self-employed in Jeju so that we can make a contribution to growth of regional economy.” <Power Korea> wishes Jeju Self-Employed Association a fruitful 2017.
