A glass of fragrant wine from Jeju
CEO Kim Yong-beom of Jeju Winery (agricultural corporation)

‘Gyuloman’ made of 100% Jeju tangerine

Tangerine is one the most famous local specialties of Jeju. Blessed by its clean air, warm sunlight and rich soil, the island produces nearly 500,000 tons of tangerine a year with its spinoff products such as tangerine ice cream, chocolate and even cosmetics. Introducing this month however is fermented Jeju wine ‘Gyuloman’. It is made of 100% Jeju tangerine (87.5% tangerine juice and fresh Jeju mineral water for the rest) and it is the first in its kind in Korea. CEO Kim said “We developed Gyuloman in an effort to find way to promote Jeju tangerine in the current market situation where cheap imported tangerines are dominating the market. We experienced some difficulty at first due to lack of sugar that is needed for the wine but our continuous challenge eventually made it happen.” Gyuloman was released in the market in 2005 and soon became the center of media spotlight. It won ‘2006 Korea Local Specialty Awards’ and the grand prize at 2011 Korean Liquor Show and a participation prize at the same awards the next year.

Growing bigger and better
Gyuloman is rich in vitamin A, C and P and citric acid, and contains naringin, flavonoid, pectin, β-cryptoxanthin, kalium and phosphorus. Kim said “Gyuloman is good for bitter stomach, coelenteron, cold, blood vessel, skin, appetite and insomnia. It also has the whole skin of tangerine which contains more nutrition.” The taste of Gyuloman is unique; bitter at first, sweet in the middle and bitter sweet at the end. The alcohol strength is 7~10% which is attractive for women and it goes well with meat and fish. It is sold in Jeju, Seoul and the capital area at the moment but Kim is planning to expand it to nationwide. He said “We will work on luxury package and brand image in addition to stabilization of the factory and distribution channels. We actually brought up the plan 5 years ago but government support will be of great help to spread the name not only in Korea but in the world.” <Power Korea> wishes Kim and Jeju Winery a successful 2017.
