“영혼을 울리는 충격으로 메아리치는 베토벤의 교향곡을 눈으로 보는 듯하다” 국내외 풍광 등 수준 높은 작품을 다양하게 선보이는 서선영 화백의 작품을 평한 말이다. 다수의 해외전 등 풍부한 경험을 바탕으로 넘치는 끼를 화폭에 자유롭게 펼쳐 놓으며 미술 애호 가들의 마음을 사로잡는다. 과감한 생략과 대범한 터치, 풍성한 여백 등 추상과 구상을 넘나드는 화풍은 화단에서 이미 높은 경지에 올라 커다란 주목을 받고 있다.

교원미전 입상해 등단, ‘작가로 꽃 피어’ 
사실과 추상의 경계 안에서 힘 있는 작품세계 구축 

서선영 화백은 45년간 그림을 그리며, 미술계에서 경력만 30년이 넘는다. 서 화백은 다양한 소재로 자신만의 독특한 작품세계를 구축 하며 화단에서 호평을 받고 있다. 그녀는 작품마다 친숙한 배경을 주요한 소재로 끌어내지만 눈에 보이는 것 외에 보이지 않는 내면의 가치를 담아내기로 더 유명하다. 작품들은 과감한 생략과 대범한 터 치를 통해 고요와 격정이 조화를 이룬다. 화폭이 비좁게 느껴질 정 도로 빽빽한 붓질로 채우면서도 전체적인 하모니도 전혀 흐트러짐 이 없다. 심상을 드러낸 강렬한 색채와 거친 붓놀림은 하나하나의 주요 소재를 돋보이게 한다는 점이 특징이다. 

서 화백은 1984년 교원미전 입선을 필두로 이름을 알렸으며 이후 1996년 한국미술대전 종합대상, 2002년 전남도전 특선 및 국전 입 선 등 화려한 수상 경력을 갖는다. 서 화백은 1990년대는 주로 한국 의 자연을 2000년대부터는 유럽의 자연과 건축물 등 세계의 풍경화 를 풀어내고 있다. 

대표 작품으로 1995년 전국 한국미술제에서 은상을 차지한 작품 ‘꽃향기를 맡는 소녀‘ 는 붉은 빛과 노란 빛의 꽃잎이 화면 상단을 강렬하게 채우고 있고, 아래 쪽으로는 짙고 푸른 풀잎의 색채가 보 는 이로 하여금 자연의 생명력과 아름다운 피안의 세계를 경험하게 해준다. 2000년 작품 ‘내 고향 목포’ 는 산등성이에서 바라본 항구의 풍경으로 짙푸른 바다의 색감과 노란 생기를 띠고 있는 하늘의 대비를 통해 독특한 심상을 구축 해냈다. ‘금강에 살고 싶어라’ 는 샛노란 낙엽의 아름다움을 거친 붓 터치로 그려냈으며, 작품 ‘오동도’는 동백꽃의 붉은 빛과 바다의 푸른 색감이 어우러져 아름다운 세계를 그려냈다. 특히 2002년 광주일보사 ‘남봉갤러리’ 에서 가진 첫 개인전에는 30년 화업 작품을 한꺼번에 쏟아내 당시 많은 관람객과 관계자들을 놀라게 했고, 화단계서도 커다란 화제를 낳았다.

한국역사의 궤와 함께 한 가족사와 ‘예술 혼’
자유로움에 아름다운 ‘야성의 끼’ 더해 무한한 창작

서 화백에게는 ‘예술 혼(魂)’으로 서린 가족사가 깃들어 있다. 정치가, 사업가, 교육가였던 아버지는 ‘목포해양대학교’ 를 설립했으며 서 화백이 태어나던 해인 한국전쟁 때 돌아가셨다. 특히, 외조부는 일제시대 일본 명치대학을 나온 인물로 그림과 바이올린을 즐겨했다. 어머니는 일제시대 극장에서 독창회를 가질 만큼 음악적 재능이 뛰어났고, 광주욱(旭)공립고등여학교(전남여고 전신) 시절엔 그림 실력도 출중해 후배인 천경자 화백을 오히려 능가했다는 평을 들은 팔방미인이었다. 서 화백의 예술적 ‘끼’는 이런 선친들로부터 이어진 선천적 요인과 무관치가 않다. 목포교대를 졸업한 서 화백의 첫 직장은 교편을 잡는 것으로 시작했다. 남편 정찬종씨 역시 교육자로 무안교육장 재임까지 교육부가 인정한 ‘혁신인물’ 로 꼽혔다. 하지만 서 화백은 남편과 달리 교직 생활이 몸에 맞지 않은 옷을 입은 듯한 느낌이었다. 결국 중간에 퇴직해 자신의 가정을 택해야 했다. 교육자 보다는 늘 자유로운 삶과 작가로서 욕망이 더 컸기 때문이다.

그녀에겐 특별히 그림 그리는 시간은 따로 없다. 마음이 부르는 때가 작업 시간이고 그 때가 삶에서 가장 활기찬 시간이다. 한밤중에라도 붓을 들기 시작하면 한낮과 같은 활기를 띤다. 

지금도 일상생활 중 번민과 노력의 나날 가운데서도 중심을 잃지 않고 자신의 끼를 믿으며, 붓을 놓고 있다가도 불현듯 영감이 들면 붓을 잡고 언제까지라도 하염없이 그림을 그린다. 이런 불규칙 속의 규칙은 30년 이상 계속되고 있다. 서 화백의 이 같은 생활 패턴을 잘 아는 남편은 응원군을 자청한다. 서 화백이 식사를 거르며 그림에 몰두할 때면 음식을 차려 직접 떠먹일 만큼 극진한 사랑을 보이는 인생 동반자이자 가장 든든한 후원자이다.

“자연 속에서 신의 섭리를 느끼고 작품으로 깨닫는다”
편안함 최고 가치로 한 자택은 ‘다작의 산실 겸 갤러리’

서 화백이 작품을 하면서 추구하는 최고의 가치는 편안함이다. 일상 속에서 작품을 하는 차원에서 광주 북구의 50평 남짓한 아파트도 작업실이자 갤러리로 꾸몄다. 그녀에게 자택은 다른 장소를 빌리지 않더라도 일상과 더불어 작업하기에 더없이 편리한 공간이다. 서 화백은 “그림에 일생을 바치며 살아온 내 자신에게 삶을 돌아보는 공간으로서도 훌륭한 결정이었다.” 고 술회했다. 이곳은 1호부터 100호까지 60점 이상 작품이 거실과 복도 등에 걸려져 서 화백의 작품 세계를 조망할 수 있을 뿐 아니라 편안한 마음으로 찾는 손님들이 음식도 함께 나눌 수 있는 공간이기도 하다. 국내외 자연과 세계를 탐구하는 듯한 마음으로 다채롭게 설계된 작품으로 채워져 있다. 열정적으로 유럽의 풍광과 건축물을 담은 작품들은 방문하는 이들의 마음을 사로잡아 하나하나 건네져 이미 많은 이들에게 사랑 받고 있다. 

“미술 애호가들이 저의 집에 찾아오면 항상 기쁜 마음으로 돌아가는데 그 모습을 보면 마음이 참 흐뭇하다” 는 서 화백은 “그림 작업에 매달리기 시작하면 보통 18 ~ 20시간 한 자리에서 꼼짝 않고 그림을 그린다. 어깨, 팔 등 아프지 않은 곳이 없지만 붓을 씻고 나면 항상 어딘가 허전한 마음이 든다. 붓이 마르면 다시 그리고 또다시 반복되지만 스스로 적잖은 위안과 행복을 얻는다” 고 덧붙여 말했다. 

세계 주요 전시서 꾸준히 러브콜 받아
“하나님 앞에 부끄럼 없는 작품 내놓고 싶어”

서 화백은 2004년 프랑스 파리 아테나 전시와 2011년 루브르 전시에서 많은 호응을 얻었으며 서울, 뉴욕, 파리, 심양, 북경, 밀라노, 취리히, 스웨덴 등 국내외 17회 개인전을 가졌으며 지금도 꾸준히 세계 각지에서 러브콜을 받고 있다. 특히 베이징올림픽 기념 Art Expo 심양 정부 및 북경전(한중문화교류전)에서 대상, 뉴욕 유엔본부 예술인상 및 스위스전 금상, 스웨덴전 최우수상 등을 수상했다. 국내서는 한국미협 광주지회의 회원으로 2013년에는 여류화가전 ‘마음을 그리다!’ 참여 작가로, 2015년에는 ‘평창동계올림픽대회(2018년) 성공기원 대한민국 우수작가 초대전’ 대상 작품으로 선정되기도 했었다. 

서 화백은 스스로 가리켜 ‘은둔, 칩거형’ 이라고 한다. 최근들어 악화 된 건강으로 수술까지 겪으며 많이 수척 해졌지만 “나 여기 있다” 고 하는 듯, 작품에 열정 쏟되 세상에 마음을 늘 열어두는 의연함으 로 사뭇 숭고해 보이기까지 한다. 세속적 역할보다 더 큰 가치와 진 일보한 마음으로 작업에 임한다는 서 화백은 “내 작품은 자연 속에 서 신의 섭리를 느끼고 자신을 깨닫는 작업이다. 하나님의 창조와 인간 창조의 어울림에서 오는 아름다움 추구에서 비롯된 것이다” 면 서 “하나님 앞에 부끄러움 없이 설 수 있는 작품을 꼭 만들고 싶다” 는 열망을 강하게 내비쳤다. 

한국의 부인들이 그러하듯, 남편과 자식을 위해 자신의 삶을 내려놓 기란 결코 쉽지가 않았을 것이다. 서 화백은 작가 길을 걸으며, 인고 의 삶에서 시댁도 살뜰히 섬겼고 순간 순간 마음 힘듦을 신앙을 통 해 극복하며 가정적으로도 모범 답안을 채워왔다. 그런 그녀에게 그 누가 함부로 자신의 잣대로 평가할 수 있을까? ‘작가는 작품으로 말 한다’ 는 진리를 일깨우는 서 화백은 “그림이라는 것은 수십 년을 그 려도 끝이 없다. 사실적이 아니며 추상적인 것도 아닌 경계의 작품으로 나만의 미적 세계를 완성하고자 한다.”고 밝혔다. 그녀의 식지 않는 열정과 끝없이 설계되는 작품에 많은 미술 애호가들이 기대를 거는 이유가 바로 여기에 있다.

‘blooming as an artist’ 
Building a strong art world within the border between realism and abstract 

Seo has painted for 45 years and has built her career in the art world for more than 30 years. She has been praised for her unique style and materials. She is good at using familiar subjects into her work but more famous for pouring the value of inner meanings. Calmness and passion make a harmony in her works through bold omitting and touches. While the brush works fill up the canvas, the overall harmony is in order. It is Seo’s characteristic that she makes each main subject stand out through strong colors and rough brush works. Seo started to spread her name by being selected from Gyowon Art Exhibition in 1984. She won the general grand prize at Grand Art Exhibition of Korea in 1996 and both selected and received a special prize at Jeonnam Art Exhibition in 2002. Seo mainly drew Korean landscapes in the 1990s but turned to European landscapes and buildings from 2000. Her representative work ‘Girl Sniffing A Flower’ (silver prize at Nationwide Korea Art Festival in 1995) is filled with red and yellow petals above half of the canvas and dark and green grass below half in order to deliver vitality of nature and the beautiful world of enlightenment. ‘My Hometown Mokpo (2000)’, on the other hand, gives unique imagery by contrasting the dark and green sea and the yellowish sky seen from a mountain ridge to a harbor while ‘I Will Live In The Geum River’ delivers the beauty of bright yellow leaves and ‘Odong Island’ delivers the red flower and the green sea. In her first solo exhibition held at Nambong Gallery in The Gwangju Ilbo building in 2000, she displayed her 30 years of works all at the same time and it not only surprised the art world but also the organizers and the appreciators. 

Maternal grandfather’s artistic and family history
Limitless creative passion fueled by wild-natured talent

Seo’s father was a politician, businessman and educator. He founded Mokpo Maritime University and passed away in 1950, the year the Korean War sparked and also Seo was born. Her grandfather (mother’s side), on the other hand, graduated from Meiji University (Japan) in the Japanese colonial era and he enjoyed painting and playing the violin. Her mother was good at music and had solo concert at a theater (also during the colonial era) and showed a great talent in painting during her Gwangjuwook Public Women’s High School (current Chonnam Girl’s High School) in which she often heard that she was better than her junior artist Chun Gyeong-Ja. Therefore, Seo’s talent in art is closely related to her family history. Seo graduated from Mokpo University of Education and worked as a teacher thereafter. Her husband Jung Chan-Jong also was an educator, served as a superintendent of education in Muan County and was chosen as an ‘innovative person’ by the Ministry of Education. But Seo found that teaching job did not suit her well and she left for free life as a housewife and an artist. Seo does not have special time for painting but draws whenever she feels like it and it is the most energetic time of the day even if it is a midnight. She grabs the brush whenever an inspiration strikes and it has been going on like this for over 30 years. Knowing this very well, her husband has become an ardent supporter of Seo. He prepares a meal and puts a spoon to her mouth with his own hand.

The best value of Seo in creating art works is ‘comfort’. She turned her 165 square meter apartment into a gallery for daily creation. It is a space where Seo can live a life and create an art work at the same time. She said “I spent my whole life for painting and the space can function for me to look back my own life.” 60 of her works in various sizes and styles are hanging on the walls of the house and they greet guests with comfort alongside snacks. The works in European landscape and buildings especially captivate the hearts of visitors and their charm is spreading out from mouth to mouth to more people. Seo said “I feel happy whenever art lovers visit my house and go back with satisfaction. I usually spend 18 to 20 hours without moving once starting a painting. My body aches here and there as a result but I still feel empty when I’m washing my brush. Then I start again and find a sense of comfort and happiness.” 

Love calls for exhibition from the world 
“I want to create works that satisfy the God” 

Seo received a good feedback from the exhibitions in Athena, Paris in 2004 and the Louvre in 2011. She has held 17 solo exhibitions home and abroad including Seoul, New York, Paris, Shenyang, Beijing, Milan, Zürich and Sweden and is still receiving love calls from the world. She won the grand prize at Korea-China Cultural Exchange Exhibition held by Art Expo Shenyang Government and in Beijing to celebrate the Beijing Olympics, the New York UN Headquarters artist prize, gold prize at an exhibition in Switzerland and the first prize at an exhibition in Sweden. She participated in ‘Drawing A Heart’, a women’s exhibition held in 2013, as a member artist of Korea Fine Arts Association Gwangju and one of her works won the first prize at Korea Excellent Artists Invitational Exhibition for Successful Pyeongchang Winter Olympics 2018’. 

Seo calls herself as a hermit. Recently, her health declined and she had to endure a surgery. But her passion in art never has ceased and she always opens her heart to the world. Seo pursues bigger value than worldly desire and said “My work is about feeling the Providence of God in nature and the process of realizing myself. I want to create works that satisfy the God.” Like many housewives, it was also difficult for Seo to leave her own life behind for the sake of her husband and children. Yet she passionately carried out her creative zeal while also taking care of the husband’s family by overcoming the hardships with religious faith. Who might dare judge her life once hearing her story? Seo said that an artist talks with the works and added “Painting never ends even after tens of years. I want to complete my own art world with works which will be neither realism nor abstract.” That is why many art lovers keep paying attention to Seo. <Power Korea> wishes Seo a fruitful 2017.
