[Art] Power Interview – Artist Bae Sung-mi
The artist of water reflection who catches the moment
Bae adds density to her works in the Netherlands

The figures reflected in the water look upside down. Water shows things as they are but ironically reflects the world upside down. What’s the truth? Me standing on earth or me reflected in the water? The tree shouldering the sky or the tree treading on the sky? My heart sinks into the beauty of the reflection over this puzzle anyway. When the light hits the surface in the wind, the water creates unimaginative ripples with brilliant vibration. I catch and shift the very moment onto canvas and it becomes the color and the shape of my heart and body. I examine myself during this shifting process from Water Reflection to Self Reflection. – Artist’s note –

Water Reflection receives positive feedback in Europe
“The trees reflected in the water seem to have shaken the photographic image. It was clear at first but gradually turns into afterimages through repetitive tremor and shake. Yet it keeps its essence intact. A memory is born at the tip of the quiet gaze and exposes one’s existence. Modesty and simplicity in color give a sense of closeness. The thick brush lines are similar to Korean wash drawing and sometimes reveal the surface of water through photo-like images. Yellowish green supports a blank space on the canvas and the harmony between silent vitality and rhythm delivers a soundless chorus of nature.”

This is what one might feel like when seeing some of her works ‘Blending’, ‘Diffusion’ and ‘Beautiful Struggle’. The works catches a moment of water surface or its surrounding reflected by the light to reveal the true nature of the property of matters. ‘Blending’ in particular reflects the trees on the water around a canal in the Netherlands. Bae reinterpreted and expressed the reflected images with restrained colors and applied brush works of oriental painting before the colors dry up.

Water is abundant in the Netherlands as an eighth of the country lying below sea level. While staying in the land, Bae observed with keen eye the reflected images and ripples on water surface. She felt that she found a new world. “I started to shift the world onto canvas with oil paints but oriental brush work in order to emphasize my own identity. Physically it is the world upside down but morally it is a reflection of me: reflecting myself as I am, my pure spirit.”

Exchange with local artists
Bae walked a single path as an artist for the last 13 years. She lived overseas for 20 years following her diplomat husband who had to travel 7 countries. Bae obtained a master’s degree in food engineering at Seoul National University Graduate School in 1985. But her interest in art started from childhood: she learned the basics of drawing at an adult school in the US and studied painting in Japan in 1996. In 2001, she learned ‘finger painting’ from a German artist and participated in an exhibition and in 2003, obtained a Bachelor of Arts at Hongik University Art & Design Center on Academic Credit Bank System and pushed forward her creative zeal in earnest from 2004. At one time during her 20 years of journey following her diplomat husband, she stayed in The Hague and had a chance to exchange with local artists at De Vrije Academie where she deepened her passion in art. De Vrije Academie is known to have one of the best artist support systems. Bae obtained a right to create her works there in full time for 3 years from 2004 to 2007. From 8 in the morning till 10 at night, she held tight of her brush and poured all her passion. Her work ‘Blending’ was created during this time.

Trying something new
Alongside her creative zeal at De Vrije Academie, Bae also is proud to be a member of ‘Haagse Kunstkring’. It was established in 1891 and renowned architects, writers, actors, musicians and artists have been active as members. She joined the society in January 2007 by presenting her portfolio and she still is a member. She held 3 solo exhibitions at the gallery of the society and in the Netherlands. Her finger painting work ‘Mama’ received positive feedback for excellent depiction of the portrait especially in South Africa. ‘Blending (2006)’, on the other hand, was invited to ‘2009 Florence Biennale’ and received love calls from many galleries in Europe and the US. So far, Bae has held 8 solo exhibitions and 50 group exhibitions and won numerous prizes at various exhibitions including Kyung Hyang Art Festival.

“I visited many galleries and museums during my overseas stay. What I saw and felt and learned there have become my inspiration and sources of creation. My husband is soon to be retired and we recently came back to Korea. And I’m determined to push forward the second phase of my creative zeal in the homeland for more and better works and exhibitions.”

From brush to finger to mixed media, Bae’s methods of creation will continue its way to uniqueness. She will widen her eyes to reflection on matters over water and we might soon have a chance to appreciate reflected objects in the eye or in a puddle.
<Power Korea> wishes Bae a great 2017.
