“컴퓨터와 미술 세계를 넘나드는 작가”
대중적 이미지와 그래픽 활용해 창의적인 세계 연구

뉴미디어 시대에 디지털 컴퓨팅 기술이 녹아든 유화, 수채화 등 전통회화 작품을 이제는 어디서나 쉽게 만날 수 있다. 컴퓨터 기능의 비약적인 발전으로 순수미술에서 응용미술에 이르기까지 널리 사용되기에 필수 미디어 중 하나가 된 것이다. 하지만 하루가 다르게 급변하는프로그래밍과 소프트웨어 툴의 발전과 그 기능의 다양성은 디지털 매체 예술가들의 작품을 자칫 빈곤한 예술 철학을 감추는 첨단 기법의 실험으로 전락시킬 수 있다는 우려도 나온다. 이런 가운데 한국 디지털 예술 1세대로 불리는 ‘박천신 작가 겸 대학교수’ 가 이에 대한 끊임없는 연구와 창작을 거듭해 가면서 주목을 받고 있다. <편집자 주>

미술의 새 지평 연 ‘박천신 디지털아트 작가’
동아아트갤러리 개관 2주년 기념전에서 ‘화제’

미술 분야의 기능에 디지털 이미지를 활용한 ‘디지털 예술’ 에 대한 관심이 갈수록 높아지고 있다. 이 분야에서 지금까지 발전에 큰 역할을 해 온 인물로 ‘박천신 작가’를 절대 빼 놓을 수가 없다. 박 작가는 일찍이 그래픽 디자인에 큰 관심을 갖고 멀티미디어 디자인과 컴퓨터 아트를 공부해 한국에 실질적으로 처음 알린 ‘디지털 아트’ 의 개척자다.

현재는 컴퓨터와 미술 세계를 넘나들며 ‘소프트웨어의 미학’ 을 그림으로 표현하고 연구해 가고 있다. 박 작가는 1982년 스위스에 처음 유학했다가 프랑스 파리의 ‘에꼴 슈페리에 데 아트 그래피끄’ (ESAG, Ecole Superieure des Art Graphique)에서 슈퍼디플롬 컨셉츄얼 그래픽디자인을 전공했다. 당시는 오로지 디자인 공부만 몰두했었다. 이곳에서 게임용 ‘아미가 컴퓨터’(1980년대 중반에서 1990년대 초반 컴퓨터)를 다루는 예술가들을 자주 보면서 깊은 관심을 가졌고, 세계적인 아트 디렉터가 되는 것이 꿈이었던 그녀는 한동안 빠리의 잡지사와 로고 디자인 회사에서 일하다가 다시 미국으로 건너가 뉴욕의 ‘스쿨 오브 비주얼아트’(School of Visual Arts) 컴퓨터아트 대학원에서 컴퓨터 예술을 전공해 1993년에 석사과정을 마쳤다. 첫 개인전을 연 것은 1991년. 당시에 박 작가는 뉴욕의 다중매체 커뮤니케이션(Multi dimenrional communicarion Inc) 회사의 아트디렉터로 근무하면서 대학원에 재학 중이었는데, 처음 접한 컴퓨터 드로잉세계의 매력에 빨려들게 되었다. 1983년 그래피디 아티스트 ‘키스해링(Keith Haring)’이 그의 그래피디를 컴퓨터 상에서 구현하는 실험을 했고, 릴리안 슈월츠(Lilian Schwartz) AT&T 벨랩의 미디어센터에서 심볼릭 3600컴퓨터로 컴퓨터의 페인팅 구현 능력 테스트를 성공적으로 끝내고 SVA에서 강의하고 있었는데 이 만남이 박 작가의 인생을 컴퓨터 아트로 끌어들이는 계기가 되었다. 상업예술에 사용되는 사진에 순수사진 분야가 발전하였듯 컴퓨터를 매체로 순수미술의 새로운 분야가 발전 할 수 있으리라 믿고 컴퓨터 그림에 빠져들어 그림을 만들기(박 작가는 그림을 그린다 하지 않고 만든다고 표현)시작하였다. 전액 학교 지원금으로 소호에서 컴퓨터를 사용한 실험적인 순수 회화전을 열면서 많은 관심과 호응을 얻었다. 박 작가는 개인전 직후부터 예술가로 프랑스와 미국 등 해외 미술계로부터 많은 관심을 받았으며, 1993년 ‘압구정 갤러리’에서 귀국전을 열고 국내에 ‘디지털 예술’ 세계를 알렸다. 그녀는 1995년 동아갤러리 개관 2주년 기념으로 한국과 미국 작가 19명이 참여한 ‘인간과 기계 : 테크놀로지 아트’ 전에서도 크게 주목 받았다. 이 전시에서 박 작가는 디지털아트의 새로운 비전을 제시했다는 평을 받았다.

대중적 이미지와 그래픽 활용
‘창의적 세계’ 구축

‘컴퓨터 아트’ 하면 팝 아티스트 ‘앤디 워홀’이 컴퓨터로 제작한 디지털 작품을 먼저 떠올리게 된다. 지난 1985년 ‘워홀’이 코모도어 인터내셔널사(社)의 <아미가 1000 컴퓨터>를 이용해 제작한 대표작 ‘캠벨 수프 통조림’, ‘마릴린 먼로’ 이미지, 록밴드 블론디의 데비 해리의 얼굴 등은 컴퓨터를 활용해 재 작업한 것으로 세계적으로 큰 반향을 불러 일으켰다. 박 작가는 이런 면에서 당시로는 획기적인 혜안으로 학문을 했고, 이를 국내에 적용 시킨 것이다. 그녀는 그림을 그리는 도구가 단순히 펜이나 붓만 있는 게 아니란 것을 보여줬다. 컴퓨터가 사무적인 기계에 머물지 않고 미술 분야에서 그림 그리기 위한 도구로서 기능을 정리했으며, 자신이 근무하는 서울예술대학에서 제대로 학생들에게 가르치는 ‘디지털 이미지’ 표현 작가로서 큰 의미를 갖는다.

‘디지털 이미지’ 표현 기법은 두 가지로 나뉜다. 하나는 ‘벡터 그래픽스’(Vector Graphics)로 이는 매트릭스 사각형 안에 구성된 픽셀과 점, 선, 곡선 등으로 물체를 그리는 이미지 표현 시스템이다. 함수 연산으로 표현되며 하나의 도형은 한 가지 색으로 표현되므로 색의 뭉개짐이 없다. 다만 복잡하고 정교한 표현에는 적합지가 않다. 이것은 그래픽부터 특수효과에 이르기까지 컴퓨터 미학이 발달하는 핵심적인 그래픽 기술로 구현된다. 2차원 프로그램의 대표적인 예가 일러스트, 코렐드로우, 플래쉬 등이다. 다음은 ‘래스터 그래픽스’(Raster Graphics). 이는 컴퓨터 그래픽스(CG)에서 도형을 생성하는 방법의 하나로 화상이 개별적으로 제어 가능한 수많은 행과 열로 배열된 도트(dot) 또는 화소(pixel)로 기억되는 방식을 뜻한다. 래스터 그래픽스에서는 하나의 도형을 미세한 도트들의 집합으로서 다루며, 비트맵 그래픽스(Bitmap Graphics)와 같은 의미다. 요즘의 카메라나 유화 물감 만큼 널리 알려진 포토샵, 페인트샵, 페인터 등이 그렇다. 박 작가의 작업은 ‘벡터’ 와 ‘래스터’ 를 활용해 디지털 이미지의 발상과 표현을 다룬다. 그녀는 배우 ‘줄리아 로버츠’ 등 대중에게 친숙한 대상, 또는 자연의 변화 등 소재를 찾아 회화적인 미학을 담아 그래픽을 이용해 창의적인 세계를 펼쳐 보였다. 박 작가는 자신의 작업을 위해 이미지를 만들어 내는 알고리즘을 직접 개발해 프로그램을 제작하는 등 열정도 쏟았다.
 

2002년 예술의 전당 한가람 미술관에서 서양화가 고 상하 김서봉 선생과 함께 오일페인팅 이후 새로운 페인팅 재료로서 디지털페인팅과 오일 페인팅의 융합을 실험하는 전시를 가져 페인팅 세계의 융합과 변화를 주도했다. 이 전시는 디지털 시대 화가의 모습을 알리며 많은 관심을 모았다. 무엇보다 서양화가들이 뉴미디어 페인팅에 관심을 보인 전시였다. 2010년 하나아트갤러리 초대전에서 디지털과 미술, 동양과 서양, 과거와 미래가 자유롭게 뒤섞인 작품 세계를 보여준 것도 좋은 사례다. 이로써 박 작가는 범람하는 디지털 이미지 속에서 한국적인 미학을 발견할 수 있는 인간 중심의 작가로서 명성을 더욱 공고히 한 계기가 되었다.

“뉴미디어 시대 따른 작품세계 변화해 갈 터”

박 작가는 ‘미디어는 예술이다’, ‘산에는 꽃이 피네’ 등의 개인전을 개최해 중견 작가로서의 경력도 쌓아 갔다. ‘산에는 꽃이 피네’ 전은 김소월의 시 ‘산유화’ 에서 영감을 받은 작품들이며 이는 꽃을 소재로 고요하면서 힘 있는 자연을 디지털 매체로 구현한 것이다. 특히 봄부터 겨울까지 계절의 흐름을 따라 구성한 작품은 평면과 애니메이션, 영상 등으로 구성해 다채롭게 선보여 관람객은 물론 전통회화 예술가들까지 큰 관심을 보였다. 그녀는 디지털아트가 무엇인지를 알리는 <Blossoming Flowers>, <디지털아트: 디지털페인팅> 등 저서도 집필했다. 특히 <디지털아트: 디지털페인팅>은 기술의 진보에 따라 그 외연을 넓혀 온 디지털아트의 제작 원리와 예술적 가능성 등을 분석한 저서로 작가로서 경험, 오랜 기간 학생들을 지도하면서 경험하고 컴퓨터 응용표현 교육에 대한 연구 결과, 그리고 동시대 디지털 페인팅의 정체성과 확장성을 함께 논의한 책이다. 디지털 페인팅 작품집 <Blossoming Flowers>은 꽃을 주제로 한 자작시와 에세이를 담아 대중적이면서도 현대적 작품을 함께 감상하게 만들었다. 그리고 교육자로서 서울예술대학에 디지털아트 학과도 신설했다. 그 학과는 현재 글로벌 문화예술컨텐츠를 확장해 예술과 과학의 융합 과정을 시도 하는 중이다. 

박 작가는 “시각 미술에서 전달 방식으로 사용된 모든 질량을 가진 것 즉, 물질적인 재료는 매체라고 하는데, 디지털 매체는 비물질이라는 점이 매우 새로운 대상이다. 디지털 매체 미술은 21세기 주류 문화의 시각적 반동으로서 탄생한 만큼 향후 어떤 방식으로 발전을 이루게 될지 명확히 유추해 내기 힘들다. 기술이 끊임없이 발전하기 때문이다. 21세기의 디지털아트는 누가 어떤 방식을 사용해 얼마나 전위적으로 작품을 만들어 내느냐에 따라 전혀 다른 예술이 될 것이지만, 그러나 컴퓨터아트의 드로잉과 페인팅 부분에서는, 기술의 신비함에 감동되던 실험적 시대를 넘어서, 이미 그 기술의 종착역을 본 듯하다. 누구나 하나씩 소유하고 있는 카메라처럼 대중적인 것”이라고 말했다. 그녀는 2017년 정유년을 맞이해 ‘루브르 박물관 아트페어'의 성공을 바라며 야심찬 준비를 하고 있다.

‘Digital art’ is a field that applies digital images to art. It is reported that more and more people are showing interest in digital art today and we cannot miss mentioning a digital artist Park Cheon-shin when talking about the art. She studied multimedia design and computer art and  is the one who introduced ‘digital art’ to Korea. She currently is expressing ‘beauty of software’ into pictures by crossing over the worlds of computer and art. She went to Paris to study super diplom conceptual graphic design at ESAG (Ecole Superieure des Art Graphique) in 1982. She met and exchanged with numerous amiga artists (relating to computer art between the 1980s-1990s), worked for a magazine and a logo design firm in Paris, went to New York to study computer art at School of Visual Arts and finished the course in 1993. She held her first solo exhibition in 1991. Around that time, she worked as art director at Multi dimenrional communicarion Inc in New York and was charmed by computer drawing. In 1983, a graffiti artist ‘Keith Haring’ experimented to create graffiti with his computer, successfully tested computer’s painting ability with the symbolic 36000 computer at Lilian Schwartz AT&T Bellep Media Center and was giving lectures at SVA. Meeting with Haring around this time encouraged Park to engage in computer art. Park believed that she could make a picture with computer. She held a pure picture exhibition with works created by computer in Soho and the school supported the fund by 100%. The respond was great and Park started to attract attention from the art world in France and the US since the exhibition and held homecoming exhibition at Apgujeong Gallery in 1993 to introduce her ‘digital art’ to Korea. She also attracted a great attention, alongside 19 fellow artists, in ‘Human and Machine: Technology Art Exhibition’ held to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of Donga Art Gallery. She was praised for suggesting a new vision in the digital art. 

Building ‘creative world’ with popular images and graphics

‘Computer art’ might remind of the pop artists Andy Warhol first. Warhol made ‘Campbell's Soup Cans’, ‘Marilyn Monroe’ and ‘Debbie Harry’, the singer of Blondie, by using <Amiga 1000 computer> of Commodore International in 1985 and they created a sensation in the world. Park studied the field with insight and applied it in the Korean soil. She demonstrated a computer can also be used for creating an art work and she also taught students at Seoul Institute of The Arts. Expressive technique of ‘digital image’ is divided into two. ‘Vector Graphics’ draws a picture with pixels, dots, lines and curves in matrix. It is expressed in arithmetic operation and one figure is expressed in one color so there is no smudge of colors. It is not suitable for precise expression but good examples are illustration, Corel draw and flash. ‘Raster Graphics’, on the other hand, is one of the methods to create a figure in CG and it is memorized as dot and pixel which are individually controllable in screen; it is same like Bitmap Graphics. Good examples are PhotoShop, PaintShop and Painter. Park uses both ‘Vector Graphics’ and ‘Raster Graphics’ to create works. She finds popular images for her works and ‘Julia Roberts’ is a good example. She developed algorithm to make her own image. In the joint exhibition with artist Kim Seo-bong (diseased) at Hagaram Art Museum, Seoul Arts Center in 2002, she experimented on combination of digital painting and oil painting and it attracted an eye of western artists in new media painting. Park also showed mixed contents of digital, art, west and east and past and future at Hana Art Gallery Invitational Exhibition in 2010 through which she strived to find values of Korean esthetics.

“My works will change according to the age of new media”

Park has strengthened her status as an artist through her solo exhibitions ‘Media Is Art’ and ‘Flower Blooms in Mountain’. Park had an inspiration from the poet Kim So-wol for the latter one and she realized the power of calm nature with flowers through digital images in forms of flat surface, animation and video according to the flow of the four seasons. She also wrote books such as <Blossoming Flowers> and <Digital Art: Digital Painting>. The latter contains manufacturing principles and artistic possibilities of digital art as well as Park’s knowhow in the field and in teaching her students. Park also discussed on identity and expandability of digital painting in the book. <Blossoming Flowers>, on the other hand, is a workbook of digital painting themed on flowers and it contains poems and essays of Park. As an educator, Park opened Department of Digital Art at Seoul Institute of The Arts and the department is now covering global culture and art contents. Park said “Digital computing now has become a media or a material in the fields of drawing and painting and it will lead to a new world of creativity and art works.”
