“화사한 꽃의 색감으로 자연과 호흡하는 작가”
한국화 기법의 새로운 가치성 보이며 화단에서 커다란 화제

우리 전통의 한국화는 서양화와는 다른 방식의 미학을 추구한다. 붓을 통해 먹으로 번지는 독특한 선의 미감과 더불어 화면을 일부러 비워둬 그 안에서 새로운 심상이 발전되도록 만드는 미학으로 매력이 있다. 한국화는 수묵화, 수묵담채화, 진채화(채색화) 등으로 나뉘는데, 사용하는 기본색 역시 은은하고 담백한 아름다움이 물씬 풍겨 보는 이들의 마음속에 진한 행복감을 선사한다. 이런 한국화 특유의 미학에 ‘소호(素湖) 김옥숙(金玉淑)’ (한국명인 제 2015-24호) 화백이 그만의 채색기법으로 진일보 시켜 화단에서 많은 주목을 받고 있다. <편집자 주>

자연의 숭고함을 화폭에 담는 ‘한국화 명인’  
올해로 화업 34년째를 맞이하는 김옥숙 화백은 색색의 들꽃에서부터 바다, 산, 들 등 자연의 풍경을 그려오는 작가로 명망이 높다. 작품은 일찍이 그 독특한 미감과 쉽게 범접할 수 없는 내공으로 한국화 기법의 새로운 가치성과 창작의 의미를 보여준다는 평을 받았다. 우리 전통 미술인 한국화 안에서 새로운 가치를 찾는다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닐 텐데도, 김 화백은 묵묵히 자신의 역량을 다하여 자연의 고요함과 역동성을 동시에 보여주는 빛깔을 선택하고 있다.

김 화백이 작가의 길을 걸으며 처음 선택한 것은 유화 물감이었다. 20년 세월을 유화로 작업을 하다가 어느 날 먹의 매력에 빠져 서예, 문인화를 하게 되었고 이로 인해 한국화의 하나인 채색화에 본격적으로 몰입하기 시작했다. 이렇게 해서 올해로 14년째에 이른다. 작품들은 수없이 되풀이 되는 붓질을 통해 관객과 소통하며, 숭고한 이미지까지 지니고 있다. 

김 화백은 한국화를 시작한 이래, 2009년 경남여성미술대전 최우수상, ‘내설악 구곡담 계곡’으로 2014년 33회 대한민국미술대전 입선, ‘추암’으로 2015년 대한민국현대미술대전 최우수상, ‘일월오봉도’와 ‘홍련밭’으로 2015년 34회 대한민국미술대전 전통미술 및 구상 부문 특선, ‘도학지몽’과 ‘행복’으로 2016년 35회 대한민국미술대전 전통미술 및 구상 부문 특선 등 다양한 수상 경력을 쌓았다. 특히 자신만의 꽉찬 수묵채색 기법으로 한국화 고유의 여백의 미를 살려내는 진일보한 작가로 한국명인에 이름이 올려져 있다. 

장지 위에 수천 번의 터치로 꽃을 피우는 작품들 
들꽃의 아름다움 포착, 보는 이들 행복함 젖게 해.
김 화백 작품은 다양한 색채와 기법, 소재를 동시에 품고 있지만 그 중에서도  수국, 작약, 모란 등 들꽃의 아름다움을 포착해 낸 작품들이 단연 돋보인다. 이 모두가 한지에 친근감 있게 발화해 내는 작품으로서 고유의 이미지를 살리면서 보는 이들에게 행복감이 절로 피어오르게 만든다. “그림 그리기에 몰입되어 있으면 저는 꽃이 되어 화판 속에 있습니다. 꽃을 그리고 있지만, 실은 저를 그립니다. 화사한 연분홍 낮 달맞이꽃을 그리면서 풋풋했던 소녀시절의 저를, 해바라기를 그리면서는 그림에 대한 꿈과 희망을 가득 품은 중년의 저를, 연꽃을 그리면서는 스스로 무욕한 주인으로 우뚝 서는 노년의 저를 그립니다. 이렇게 화판 속에서 저는 늘 꽃으로 피어나고 있으니, 그림을 그리고 있으면 비길 데 없이 행복합니다. 꽃은 계절에 따라 피고 지는 것이기 때문에 한 순간의 아름다움이 금세 사라져 버리는 태생적 비극성을 품고 있다. 그러나 김 화백 작품 안에서는 그 쓸쓸함을 금세 잊은 듯 화려하게 피어나는 색채를 선보이며 다가올 생명에 대한 희망을 품게 만든다. 김 화백은 “꽃은 딱딱한 지각을 뚫고 나오거나 진창 속에서 피어나면서도 흠이나 얼룩 없이 그토록 아름다우니 경이롭고, 보이지 않는 곳에서 오랜 시간 쉼 없이 움직여 비로소 그 자태를 드러내었으니 그 성실함과 열정을 생각하면 꽃의 아름다움에서는 깊은 비감마저 느껴진다” 며 연꽃 등에 대한 애착과 더불어 화폭에 담는 이유를 설명했다. 

김 화백은 전통 화선지를 서너 번 이상 겹쳐 만든 장지 위에 수천 번의 터치를 통해 꽃을 피워내는 그녀만의 작품 방식을 펼쳐간다. 자신이 바라보는 세계의 아름다움을 화폭 안에서 충실히 전달해내기 위해 모든 노력을 다하고 있다. 그것은 매우 힘든 작업이지만, 과거 유화를 그려왔던 경력이 있었기 때문인지 이러한 작업 방식이 전혀 어렵게 느껴지지 않는다고 한다.

한국화 기법의 새로운 가치성을 보이며 인정 받아

김 화백은 교사의 길을 갔으면 좋겠다는 부모의 바람에 따라 선생님이 되었고, 그 후 평범한 생활을 일궈갔다. 하지만 마음속에 품었던 화가의 꿈은 늘 사그라지지 않았다. 이런 김화백이 작가의 길을 걸을 수 있었던 원동력은 어머니였다. 어머니는 꽃을 무척 사랑하셨고지금도 대구의 어머니 집엔 꽃들로 가득하다고 한다. 꽃에 무한한 애정을 쏟듯 삶에 열정적인 어머니의 내음을 모든 작품에 닮게 담아내고 싶었던 것이 김 화백의 마음이었다.

여기에 전적으로 격려하며 응원 해준 남편의 힘도 한 몫을 했다. 중간에 갑상선을 앓는 등 죽을 고비를 넘길 만큼 건강이 안 좋은 적도 있었다. 그때마다 그림으로 받는 위안은 컸고 남편과 아들은 커다란 힘이 되어 주곤 했다. 오랜 세월 작품을 하며 유화에서 한국화 채색화로 옮겨 가면서 잃었던 건강과 활력도 많이 되찾았다고 한다.

김 화백은 2011년 ‘The Artist 100 발행기념 올해의 미술작가 초대전’에 참여하여 ‘신선나비의 외출’, ‘양귀비와 나비’, ‘해바라기’ 등 다양한 작품을 선보였다. 2015년 10월 국회의사당 초대전 ‘선과 색이 만나다’ 에서 중견작가로서 면모도 유감없이 알렸다. 출품 작품들은 대표작으로 꼽히는 꽃 시리즈 뿐 아니라 ‘해국이 피어있는 바다’, ‘추암바다’, ‘송림’, ‘요정굴뚝새’ 등 자연의 다양한 풍경을 화폭 안에 담아낸 것들로서, 스스로의 한계를 뛰어 넘었다는 평가를 받았다. 이 전시에서 한국예술문화단체총연합회 하철경 회장은 “김옥숙 선생의 한국화는 우리 전통기법을 기본으로 작업하는 것뿐만 아니라 창작 활동을 통해 자연 친화적이고 창의적인 문화 가치를 제공했다” 며 호평을 쏟아냈다.

“다양한 장르 접목해 작품세계 더욱 발전시킬 터”
김 화백은 하루 작업량도 어마어마하다. 장지에 붓을 들고 그리는 작업이 쉽게 이루어지는 것이 아님에도 워낙 작업량이 많은 탓에 경남권에선 꽤 많은 17회 개인전과 다수의 그룹 전에 참여하는 등 부지런한 작가로 널리 알려져 있다. 

현재는 한국미술협회, 마산미술협회, 경남한국화가협회 등에 가입하여 활발한 활동을 이어가고 있으며, 대한민국 미술 발전에도 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다. 그녀에게 있어 2016년은 특별하면서 바쁘게 보낸 한 해였다. 중국 항주, 부산을 비롯해 6월 말부터 7월 초까지는 인사동 갤러리 미술세계에서 열린 KOAS(Korea Art Special Exhibition) 전에 참여해 출품한 작품 중 6점이 팔렸을 정도로 미술 애호가들의 마음도 사로잡았다. 이와 함께 부산국제아트페어에서는 2015년 대한민국미술대전 특선작인 ‘홍련밭’이 인도의 미술품 수집상에게 판매되었고, 10월에는 거제시청에 ‘송림’ 그림으로 전시를 하는 등 전국 각지와 해외에서 러브 콜을 받았다. 새해에도 1월 중에 LA 아트페어, 2월에는 벨기에 아트페어 등에 참여할 예정이다. 

우리의 삶 속에서 소박하고 정갈하게 다가오는 찰나의 순간과 감정을 명민하게 포착하여 화폭에 되새기는 것은 작가에게는 커다란 자긍심의 원천이다. 김 화백은 기존 한국화의 수묵채색화에 새로운 재료와 기법을 적용하여 자신만의 작품세계를 더욱 깊이 있게 발전시켜 나가고자 하는 바람을 가지고 있다. 기품과 더불어 아름다움이 묻어나는 김 화백의 끝없는 작품 행보에 기대가 크다.

“Artist who breathes with nature in gorgeous flowery color”

Creating sensation in art circle with new value of Korean painting methods
‘Master of Korean painting’ who pours nobility of nature into canvas
Artist Kim Ok-Suk has gained popularity for her landscape painting containing wild flowers, mountains, fields and the sea for the last 34 years. Her works have been praised for unique beauty and unreachable endurance through which she showed a new value and the meaning of creation. It might have not been easy to find a new value in Korean painting but Kim has demonstrated nature’s stillness and dynamism through various colors. 

Kim chose oil painting from the very moment she grab a brush. She devoted herself to oil painting for 20 years before falling into the charm of Korean ink and created numerous works of calligraphy and literary paintings. She then moved on to colored picture which she has done for 14 years now. Her works communicate with appreciators and they even have noble images. 

Kim won the first prize at Gyeongnam Women Art Festival in 2009, was selected for 33rd Grand Art Exhibition of Korea in 2014 with her work ‘Gugokdam Valley in Inner Seorak Mountain’, won the first prize at Korea Modern Art Contest in 2015 with her work ‘Chuam’, special prize at 34th Grand Art Exhibition of Korea in 2015 with her works ‘Ilwolobongdo’ and ‘Red Lotus Field’ in the category of traditional art and figurative art and special prize at 35th Grand Art Exhibition of Korea in 2016 with her works ‘Dohakjimong’ and ‘Happiness’ in the category of traditional art and figurative art. Especially, she listed her name in Korean Masters for Korean ink and color painting.

Catching the beauty of wild flowers captivate heats of appreciators
The subjects of Kim’s works contain various colors, methods and materials but hydrangea and peony in particular stand out. Kim livens up its original images on the Korean papers and it makes appreciators naturally have feeling of happiness. “I’m in the painting in a form of a flower while I’m painting. I draw a flower but I actually draw myself; a girl charmed by pinky evening primrose, a middle aged woman with full of dream and hope through sunflower and an old woman standing desireless. I always bloom myself in the painting and I’m truly happy.” – From artist’s note – 

Flowers live with tragedy that they have to die away as seasons change. But in Kim’s painting, they provide hope of new life in splendid color. Kim showed a great affection towards lotus flower by saying “The flower buds up from sturdy field or mud yet it is beautiful and marvelous and I feel a deep mystery when considering its diligence and passionate effort to bloom.” 

Kim blooms flowers on Korean paper by giving thousands of brush. She does her best to deliver her artistic world onto the papers. It is a really difficult process but for Kim it is not that difficult as she has experience in oil painting in the past.

Kim used to work as a teacher following her parents’ wish and walked a rather common life all the while carrying her dream to be an artist deep inside her heart. But her mother’s love of flowers eventually became the driving force of Kim to take her way and she shifted her mother’s love of flowers into her own works. Her mother’s house in Daegu still is full of flowers. 

Her father’s support also played an encouraging role. She once suffered from thyroid and bad health but found comfort from painting and the husband and the son served as great energy and power for her. She gained her health to a significant level during her shift from oil painting to colored pictures. 

Kim participated in ‘The Artist 100 Publication Invitational Exhibition for Artists of the Year’ in 2011 with her works ‘Going Out of Nymphalis Antiopa’, ‘Poppy and Butterfly’ and ‘Sunflower’. She also demonstrated her artistic ability with her work ‘Meeting of Lines and Colors’ at an exhibition held at National Assembly building in October 2015. Other works displayed included ‘The Sea with Arctic daisy’, ‘Chuam Sea’, ‘Pine Forest’ and ‘Fairy-wren’ with which she was praised for overcoming self-limitation. The chairman of The Federation of Artistic & Cultural Organization of Korea Ha Gyeong-Chul said “Kim’s Korean paintings are based on traditional methods and they have provided eco-friendly and creative cultural values to us.”

“I will develop my style with a variety of genres” 
Kim’s daily workload is enormous. As a result, she is known as a diligent artist and has had 17 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions in South Gyeongsang Province. 

Currently, she is a member of Korea Fine Arts Association, Masan Fine Arts Association and Gyeongnam Korean Artists Association and is contributing to development of Korean art. 2016 was a special and busy year for Kim. 6 of her works were sold at KOAS (Korea Art Special Exhibition) held in Hangzhou (China), Busan and Insa-dong gallery Misulsegye from late June to early July. Her work ‘Red Lotus Flower’ also was sold to an Indian art collector at Busan International Art Festival and her other work ‘Pine Forest’ was displayed at Geoje City Hall in October. Meanwhile, Kim is scheduled to participate in art fairs in LA and Belgium in January 2017. 

Capturing the moment’s feeling into a work is the source of her pride. Kim hopes to develop her style deeper by applying new materials and methods to Korean ink and color painting. <Power Korea> is looking forward to seeing a continuous passion of Kim in 2017.
