“There still is hope for Korea standing at the crossroads
of leap forward and slump”
CEO Park Yoo-jae of ENEX

Where does crisis come from?

We all might agree that Korea at the moment is at a critical juncture. Whether we move forward towards economic growth or chaos, division and conflicts will be decided in the year 2017. CEO Park Yoo-jae of ENEX says that Korean history has been a series of overcoming crisis by its reserved strength. Korea underwent the Japanese colonial rule for 35 years but we cannot repeat this ever again, says Park, but the current political situation rather seems to be similar to the late Joseon Dynasty period; exclusivism, party strife, labor aristocrats, spider web-like regulations, anti-corporate sentiment and high unemployment rate. Park continues “Active investment leads to economic recovery through job creation which then again leads to an increase in national income and middle class. The nation must come first before an individual and friendly rivals before party strife between the politicians bring national unity. National prosperity and the welfare of the people must be the top priority of them. So I suggest ¨ç policy-oriented politics like advanced countries ⓶ the separation of economy and politics ⓷ cooperation between the management and the labor ⓸ deregulation ⓹ creating good investment environment ¨ì raising national status. We need to remember the history that Korea faced the disastrous Korean War within 3 years after the liberation but eventually achieved GDP 27,000 (USD) starting from 70, ranking No.10 economic power in the world within 70 years, turning the country as giving the support to developing countries from receiving it.” Park ascribes the current political and economic crisis to 1) unbalanced development of the 4 core values (economic affluence, mental health, social justice and freedom), materialism and administrative opportunism but neglect on the moral side 2) proliferation of negativism and objectors and lack of bargaining power 3) lack of civic consciousness and consideration for other people 4) regal power of the president and corruption of its circles and undemocratic National Assembly Advancement Act 5) lack of leadership and policy making.

Centralized power as administrative absurdity in the wartime
Some people say that the current crisis is a temporary phenomenon but Park regards it as vague positivism is most dangerous. He says “Many people think that Koreans are great people but that is only a delusion. Koreans being the most industrial and the smartest in the world actually encourage the people to stay where there are now rather than to challenge for a better future. It is true that Koreans achieved the Miracle on the Han River but it was time to examine carefully what side effects it has brought to us especially in terms of Korea’s poor politics and incompetent politicians.” Park takes ‘the 5 year single term presidential system’ called as ’87 System’ as a good example. It was a dubious product in 1987 where political parties reorganizing themselves on their own interests. The 5 year of centralized power has encouraged the people close to the president to involve in corruption and the policies have been made to showcase its achievement while leaving economic growth and public welfare which need to be set in a long term perspective all behind. Park says “If we look at all the elected presidents so far, none of them were free from corruption either him/herself or by the people around. We must take this as the clear indication for a change.”

Leaping forward one more time through change and innovation
Park continues “Revision of the Constitution is needed to turn the centralized power to ‘a small government’. We must clear out of the 87 System and launch a new type of ‘the 7th Republic. The centralized power needs to be spread to local governments with the central government only taking its role on controlling the overall national structure and its policy while the National Assembly completely separates politics from businesses but focuses on economy, security and foreign affairs. Economic crisis comes from lack of investment and the government needs to take a bold step for deregulation while supporting cooperation between the management and the labor. The effective reform on the public, educational, financial and labor sectors and a strong and stable monetary system are also needed.” However, Park gives most of his emphasis on public awareness. He says “Korea indeed has grown to a considerable level in terms of its economy but the people’s manners and the social justice are way below its level; lack of consideration to other people and lack of ethics.” Park mentioned that the difficulties facing right in front of us is not to be afraid of but a sign to call better things in the future so we must fight it through with spirit. He added “Communication and reconciliation are the keys to consolidation and prosperity of the nation. Through this, I believe, Korea will make yet another miracle to be one of the 5 advanced nations in the world.” <Power Korea> wishes Park and ENEX a great 2017.
