Fostering great talents for the age of convergence through humanities and capability empowerment projects
"Humanities is the foundation of all studies and it leads us to better personality and job"
Kim Yang-hyun, director of CORE (Initiative for College of Humanities’ Research and Education) and philosophy professor of Chonnam National University

CORE livens up importance of humanities

It has become a trend today that star lecturers in the fields of Korean and English literature, history and philosophy are gaining popularity by appearing as regular panels in Cable TV programs. Naturally, the trend is raising public interest in reevaluation and importance on humanities. In accordance with this trend, the government introduced CORE (Initiative for College of Humanities’ Research and Education) to universities. It is designed to connect humanities specialists to university curriculums and to promote personality education and students' learning ability through specialized programs onsite. 19 colleges of humanities nationwide currently are carrying out this 3 year-based CORE. Based on the 12 core departments, Chonnam National University, in particular, is exerting its effort in fostering talented humanities specialists who will be able to apply it to various convergence projects. Director Kim of CORE of Chonnam National University has gone one step further over the existing supportive BK Project and HK Project to push forward both supportive and two-way communicative training which will make CORE of Chonnam National University stand out from others. As a philosophy professor himself and the director of CORE, Kim is leading three models: Global Regional Studies (Departments of German/French/Chinese/Japanese Language & Literature), Deep-Foundation Studies (Departments of Korean/English Language & Literature, Departments of History / Philosophy), Convergence Humanities (a combination of Humanities, Computer Technology, Design, and Culture). Following these education programs, students have three possibilities. One is to continue on to graduate school to study Deep-Foundation Studies further. The other is to become global regional experts by studying politics, economy, society, culture, history, philosophy, etc. on the basis of Language & Literature. The third is to complete the course of Convergence Humanities mixed with communications technology, cultural industry, and design curriculum. The College of Humanities at Chonnam National University have developed and offer not only the regular curriculum but also various extracurricular programs for students. These teaching-learning programs consist of ‘the studying humanities group bunched together,’ ‘the group of teaching and learning humanities,’ ‘academic research group for humanities,’ ‘development of teaching method,’ ‘English Writing Lab,’ ‘program for basic humanities competency’ ‘program for writing in humanities,’ etc. To improve students’ employment competency, the College of Humanities at Chonnam National University runs various programs, including International/Domestic Internship, Course/Employment[work] Training Camp as well as Scholarship.

Academic competency and internship/employment program support development of talented students
The Korean government is granting KRW 2.9 billion to CORE of Chonnam National University for 3 years and the director Kim is confident to say that the university's CORE, as an extracurriculum, is better than the regular courses of other universities in terms of its substantiality. The CORE's three models aforementioned effectively back up student's competency and employability and secures the promising future of follow-up  students. Currently, Kim is planning a convergence technology-based winter vacation program to be held in December this year by inviting specialists in IT and design to give lectures on creating video images and commercial graphics using PowerPoint and Photo Shop. The program will be followed by a seminar that will include consulting with professors of each department, and students are already showing their interest. Also, 50 students are scheduled to have work experience in 12 organizations including Gwangju Metropolitan City during the winter and they hope to carry out this field-based study in a long term perspective. Kim said that 290 students so far have participated in their self-organized studies where professors and students converse and communicate freely and it had contributed to raising interest in humanities and academic performance.

Long term support is needed for coming age of post-human
The existing government-led educational support programs have rather focused on performance-based while the scope of personality education on elementary, middle and high schools.  However, the government's support for CORE this time is highly expected to create a renaissance in the field of Korean humanities. According to Kim, humanities is the foundation of all studies that builds self-esteem and freedom and it ultimately makes our lives rich and valuable and will turn today's growth and competition-centered society to a matured and co-existent. For this, Kim says, fostering talented humanities specialists, who will prepare for the coming age of post-human, is a must by introducing innovative systems and by raising their employability. Research on number of humanities-majored employment in advanced countries might also be of help for this, Kim adds. Core of Chonnam National University so far has run a number of effective programs including <Korean Language and Literature Research Institute Colloquium> in August, <21 Century English Language and Literature Society Symposium of British and American Studies> in September, <British and American Studies Invitational Lecture> twice in October and <Gobong Ki Dae Seung Symposium of Philosophical Studies Education Center> in November. <Power Korea> hopes that CORE of Chonnam National University will keep on creating innovation in the field of Korean humanities over the 3 year limitation and will fulfill the plan of introducing a law on humanities support.
