부곡온천 관광특구의 화려한 부활을 꿈꾸다!
부곡온천은 옛날부터 가마솥처럼 생겼다고 해서 부곡(釜谷)이라 불렸다. 전해오는 이야기에 따르면 마을에 뜨거운 물이 솟아나는 우물이 있다는 소문이 퍼지면서 옴 환자와 한센병 환자들이 치료를 했다고도 한다. 현재 하루 온천 관광객은 평균 1만~2만 명으로 연간 400만 명에 달한다. 현재 부곡온천 관광특구에는 20~30개의 다양한 온천 휴양시설이 들어서 있다. 그 중에서 최근 리모델링을 통해 고품격의 깨끗한 시설로 관광객들을 맞이하고자 탈바꿈한 창녕 화왕산 호텔의 강대길 대표이사(www.화왕산호텔.com)를 만나보았다.

국내 유일 최고의 수온인 78℃의 유황 온천  
부곡온천의 생성 연도는 정확히 알 수 없으나, 동국여지승람의 영산현조에 "온천이 현의 동남쪽 17리에 있더니 지금은 폐했다"라는 기록이 있어 오래전부터 부곡에 온천이 있었음을 알 수 있고, 동국통감의 고려기에도 ‘영산온정’이 기록되어 있어 태고 때부터 자연 분출되어 오늘에 이어진 것으로 전해지고 있다. 특히 창녕 부곡온천은 국내 유수의 온천들 중에서도 단연 최고의 수온인 78℃를 유지한다. 1973년에 발견된 유황 알칼리성 온천수이며 1일 용출량이 6,000톤으로 국내 최대량을 기록해 1970~1980년대 국내 최대 규모 온천지로 명성을 떨쳤으며 1990년대 중반부터 침체되고 있던 부곡온천을 살리기 위한 창녕군의 각종 시책 추진과 더불어 민간부문에서 시설 리모델링 사업으로 관광객이 매년 증가되고 있음에 따라 옛 명성을 점차 되찾아가고 있다. 또한 지난해에는 경남개발공사와 해외관광객 유치를 위해 업무협약 체결 후 중국인 관광객 1,300여 명이 우포늪을 방문하는 성과를 거뒀다. 최근에는 부곡온천 지역에 2010년 개장한 스포츠파크와 2013년 개관한 실내경기장인 국민체육센터에 매년 6~7만 명의 동계전지훈련팀이 찾고 있어 부곡온천관광특구는 겨울철 포화상태에 있다. 겨울 날씨가 따뜻한 데다 온천 일대 숙박업소에서 숙식이 가능하고 훈련 피로를 온천욕으로 해소할 수 있기 때문에 감독 및 선수들이 부곡에서 전지훈련을 선호하고 있는 것이다. 

“부곡 온천수가 전국 최고의 78℃ 수온에 100% 유황 온천수가 확실한 점에 매료되어 화왕산 호텔을 리모델링하게 되었습니다. 이와 더불어 머지않아 창녕 부곡온천이 전 국민들의 사랑을 받게 될 것입니다.”

창녕 화왕산호텔은 VIP실, 스위트실, 온돌실 등 60개의 객실과 250여 명이 한 번에 사용할 수 있는　연회장(대/소) 및 뷔페, 레스토랑, 헬스장, 대형온천대중탕, 키즈카페로 이루어져 있다. 최근 들어 주말뿐 아니라 주중에도 많은 관광객들이 내방하는 등 화왕산 호텔을 비롯해 부곡을 찾는 관광객들이 증가하고 있는 추세다. “창녕 부곡온천은 최고 78℃의 온천수를 하루 6,000톤 채수할 수 있는 유황 알칼리성 온천으로 유황 이외에도 규소, 염소 등 20여종의 무기질을 함유하고 있어 호흡기질환, 피부질환 등에 효과가 탁월한 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 이로 인해 전국에서 많은 관광객들이 부곡을 찾고 있습니다. 부곡이 활성화되기 위해서는 주중에 공무원 연수 등 행사가 많아야 합니다. 뿐만 아니라 온천물이 좋기 때문에 국내 관광객과 더불어 외국인 관광객 유치를 위한 창녕군의 노력도 필요합니다. 이와 더불어 온천물을 이용한 난방 시설을 하기 때문에 난방비용이 별도로 들지 않아 유지관리비 경쟁력이 아주 우수합니다.” 또한, 부곡 온천수가 혈액 내 활성산소 제거에 탁월한 효과를 보이는 점이 임상실험으로 증명되었으며 건강 기능수로 탁월한 효능이 있음 역시 학자들에 의해 입증되었다. 지난 2010년 한국기승수학회는 “유황온천인 부곡온천수로 목욕을 하면 혈액 내에 있는 활성산소를 제거해 피부 노화 억제에 탁월한 효과가 있다는 것을 임상실험으로 증명하였으며, 이에 따라 인체에 미치는 영향은 강한 항산화 효능과 피부손상 회복 속도 상승 그리고 피부노화 억제가 일반 수돗물 대비 9배가 높다”는 연구결과를 발표해 눈길을 끌었다.

강대길 대표이사는 “온천물에 몸을 담글 때 느끼는 ‘좋은 느낌’은 온천의 세 가지 작용 때문입니다. 첫째, 온열작용으로 따뜻한 물이 몸에 열에너지를 전달시키고 몸의 모세혈관을 확장시킵니다. 뜨거워진 혈액은 심장을 경유해 온몸으로 퍼지고 이 때 노폐물이 몸 밖으로 빠져나가 신진대사가 원활해집니다. 그리고 온천물의 수압 작용으로 사람의 몸은 따뜻한 물 속에서 깊이 1m마다 몸 표면의 1㎝당 100g의 수압현상이 나타나는데 이것이 말단의 혈관을 자극해 혈액순환을 좋게 만듭니다. 마지막으로 뜨거운 온천물에 들어가 둥실둥실 뜨는 부유감을 온몸으로 느끼게 되면 그것만으로도 스트레스가 해소됩니다. 최근 불경기로 우울증이 사회적인 문제가 되며 특히 주변과의 관계를 깨뜨리고 사회와 가정까지 파괴하는데 이럴 때 피로를 풀고 심신의 활기를 회복시키는 데 온천만 한 것이 없다고 생각합니다”라고 설명했다. 

현재 온천수의 기준은 나라마다 다르다. 우리나라는 1981년에 제정된 온천법에 따라 온천을 25℃ 이상의 온수로 그 성분이 인체에 해롭지 않은 것으로 정의하고 있다. 일본은 지표에 흐르는 물의 온도를 25℃ 이상으로 기준하고 있는데, 우리나라는 지하 몇 m에서 나오든 이 기준을 적용해 온천허가를 내주고 있다. 1981년도 온천법 제정 이후 전국 각 지역에 온천개발 붐이 일었던 것도 이 때문이다. 한국에 온천수가 저절로 용출되어 흐르는 곳은 단 한군데도 없다. 따라서 한국의 온천법은 현실에 맞게 개정되어야 한다. 국내 어디를 파도 100m 이상만 내려가면 25℃ 이상 수온이 나온다. 따라서 한국형 온천법 즉, 수질과 온도의 기준을 국내 실정에 맞게 재설정해야 한다.

“부곡온천이 예전처럼 명성을 되찾기 위해서는 잠과 휴식은 숙박, 목욕은 대중탕, 먹거리는 식당으로 전문화가 되어야 합니다. 그렇게 되면 상호 경쟁에 따른 사소한 마찰과 갈등이 해소되고 관광객들에겐 보다 질 높은 서비스를 제공할 수 있게 됩니다. 또한 창녕군을 찾는 대부분의 관광객들은 우포늪, 화왕산, 산토끼노래동산, 우포따오기복원센터 등 관광을 마치고, 온천욕으로 하루의 피로를 풀 수 있습니다. 앞으로도 화왕산 호텔과 더불어 창녕 부곡온천 관광특구를 찾는 관광객들이 늘어날 수 있도록 최선을 다할 것입니다”라는 강대길 대표이사의 바람처럼 창녕 부곡온천 관광특구가 국내뿐 아니라 해외의 많은 관광객들이 찾는 지역 명소로 거듭날 수 있기를 기대해본다.

The name of ‘Bugok’ Hot Springs comes from the shape of furnace from a long time ago. According to a story, there was a rumor that a well has hot water and this can cure scabies patients and Hansen's disease. It proves the hot springs has a lot of good ingredients in it and people see the result. Thank to this reason, plenty of people have been to Bugok Hot Springs and it is about 10,000~20,000 of people per day at average and it reaches at 4 millions of people a year. Currently, there are 20~30 of various hot springs resorts and facilities at special tourist zone of Bugok Hot Springs. Among them, Hwawangsan Mountain Hotel recently finished remodeling. They are now ready to welcome tourists with clean and exquisite facilities and we met CEO Gang, Dae-Gil of Hwawangsan Mountain Hotel in Changnyeong. 

The one and only sulfur hot spring with 78℃ of hot water
We don’t know what year Bugok Hot Springs exactly were built up but just guess it has been such a long time from a record in Yongsanhyeonjo of <Donggugyeojiseungnam>. It says “There was a hot spring 17-ri away from this village in east-south but not it is gone”. 

Especially, Bugok Hot Springs in Changnyeong stays with 78℃ of water, which is regarded as the best temperature out of other famous hot springs. This is sulfur alkaline hot spa discovered in 1973 and the net water amount record was the largest in the country with 6,000 ton, so this area was renowned for the biggest hot springs between 1970’s and 1980’s. For a while the popularity was going down but since the middle of 1990’s, Changnyeong County promoted the industry and started remodeling business steadily. As a result, it seems tourists are increasingly visiting here every year. Also, last year made a big success as Changnyeong County made a MOU with Gyeongnam development public corporation for having international tourists and after that, 1,300 of tourists from China came to visit Woopo swamp. Lately, 60,000~70,000 of winter training teams to Sports Training Center opened in 2013 and Sports Park opened in 2010 in Bugok Hot Springs area so, it is always conjugated in winter season. The reason why they prefer here is the weather is relatively warmer and sleeping and cooking are possible at accommodations in the hot springs. Also, trainees can relax in a hot spa, therefore, directors and athletes like to have training in Bugok Hot Springs area. “Since I was attracted by that Bugok Hot Springs has the best quality with 78℃ and 100% of sulfur hot springs in this country, I decided to do the remodeling Hwawangsan Mountain Hotel. With this, I am sure Bugok Hot Springs in Changnyeong would get loved by all the people sooner or later.” 

Hwawangsan Mountain Hotel in Changnyeong has 60 rooms by every purpose like VIP room, Suite room, Ondol room and there are banquet halls to hold 250 people at once, buffet restaurant, gym, big public hot spring and kids café. Recently, many tourists visit here during the weekdays not even on the weekend and actually, many more visitors tend to come to other hotels as well. 

“Bugok Hot Springs in Changnyeong stays in 78℃ of water and has 6,000 ton a day with sulfur alkaline hot springs. It contains different type of minerals including silicon, chlorine and sulfur so, it has been known for great at respiratory disease and skin disease. Because of that, many people from all over the country come to Bugok. To activate the promotion, it is mandatory to have many government employee training sessions. Other than that, we need the effort from Changnyeong County for holding many foreign tourists. On the other hand, we have an excellent competiveness in terms of management expenses for heating as we have hot springs.” 

Besides, hot water in the Bugok spring has an effect to remove active oxygen in blood and for healthy wise water and they are proved by scholars. In 2010, Korea Functional Water Association reported, “We proved it is effective to get rid of active oxygen in blood and good for anti-ageing when people use the hot water from Bugok’s sulfur water often with clinical demonstration. From that result, the influence on human body has a strong anti-oxidization effect and recovery of skin problems. As for preventing skin ageing was 9 times than normal tap water.” This study was getting attention. 

CEO Gang, Dae-Gil of Hwawangsan Mountain Hotel in Changnyeong explained, “When we put our body in the hot springs, we feel it is good and there are three reasons to feel like that. First of all, it is thermotherapy. Hot water makes body warm by transiting heat from it. Then, capillary gets bigger and warm blood travels to heart and it spreads out to the entire body. And then, Body wastes come out from inside body and metabolism goes smooth. And, the water pressure of hot water makes the body feel pressed every 1m depth of water. 100g of water pressure per 1cm happens and it stimulates blood on the edge to make the blood circulation better. Lastly, stress can be released only when we are in the hot spa. Nowadays, depression becomes a social issue out of economic slump and people under the pressure disconnect with others and break the family and society. I think going to hot springs can be an answer to feel better and recover body and soul.” 

Currently, the standard of hot springs varies in every country. Korea established hot spring law in 1981 and it defines hot spring water is over 25℃ and the ingredients are harmless to body. For Japan, they permits the license for only water on the ground with over 25℃ but Korea applies this rule for water out of some meters depth under the ground. This was the reason we had a boom of hot springs development after 1981. Certainly, there is no hot spring that comes out naturally out of the ground. Thus, it has to be changed by the reality. If someone digs out 100m in anywhere, the person can get warm water with over 25℃. So, we have to reset the water and temperature standard to fit to the business. 

CEO Gang, Dae-Gil of Hwawangsan Mountain Hotel in Changnyeong said, “To get back to the fame of Bugok hot springs like before, it has be specialized and divided into food and accommodation, respectively. For example, people sleep in the accommodation, they do hot springs at the public bath facility and they eat at the restaurants. If we have that responsibility, conflicts and fraction out of competition would be disappeared and tourists could get better service. In addition, most of people who visit Changnyeong County visit Woopo swamp, Hwawangsan Mountain, Woopo ibis renaturation center and hare singing hill and later they go for hot springs to relax. In the future, I will do my best to have more tourists heading to special tourist zone at Bugok Hot Springs in Changnyeong along the Hwawangsan Mountain Hotel.” 

We expect special tourist zone at Bugok Hot Springs in Changnyeong would be a popular place not only for domestic visitors but also for overseas tourists like his wish.
