40 years of passion in portrait painting
Oh displayed the pride of Korean portrait paintings at Carrousel Du Louvre
Oh Dong-hee, Portrait Artists/ Director of Oh Dong Hee Portrait Gallery

The beauty of neoclassicism and realism shine their value in a portrait painting. It is a job of a portrait artist to summarize one’s life on facial expression. Portrait artist Oh Dong-hee has poured her passion in portrait paintings for the last 40 years and has become a role model for many fellow artists and art lovers. Recently, she displayed the pride of Korean portrait paintings at Carrousel Du Louvre in Paris and <Power Korea> met her.

Global celebrities in portrait paintings made a unique smile of their own at Carrousel Du Louvre
Oh is famous for her application of neoclassicism and realism in portrait paintings. She recently participated in Carrousel Du Louvre with her representative works including Pope Francis, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Stephen Kim Sou-hwan and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as well as her other famous work ‘Tears of Haiti’. Before the art fair, Oh created a unique space in her own art gallery with her taste of neoclassicism. The gallery opened its door last April in Banpo-dong, Seocho District in Seoul and it is the Korea’s first portrait gallery boasting studios and lecture rooms. Oh loved art and visited many galleries on a regular basis since she was a little girl. She finished a master’s course at Hongik University Graduate School of Art. In order to paint portraits of eight martyrs for The Onong Holly Land, she studied about their lives for over a year and realized facial details of each martyr on the canvas. It took more than a month for one martyr.

A portrait painting is a self-biography
Oh decides composition, proportion, basic colors and color tones before blowing in a life and the detailed look of the face on the canvas. She expresses one’s path on wrinkles and virtue and personality on eyelashes. Her unique style in a set of rules was further enhanced by realizing the first great monk of Guin Temple whose face was only left with a single black and white photo. She also painted the second and the third great monks of the temple and other numerous famous figures including former presidents, politicians and army generals. Oh said that she could persuade appreciators by realizing the person’s realistic face, body, muscle and skin as well as the history of the person. If a portrait painting is emphasized with color only, it might be more like a photograph. For this reason, Oh creates the painting like a self-biography that requires a thorough study of the person’s life like those film directors, who make biographical movies, do. She said that she felt a great sense of achievement from the intensity of this creating process. Grabbing the brush, Oh says, arouses passion and challenging spirit residing in her.

Being the No.1 portrait artist who realizes a great person’s holy soul
Oh said that she opened her own gallery as a place where her colleagues and junior artists as well as art lovers gather together for communication. Oh is a prolific artist and her works were the foundation that have made her famous today. Many people, for this reason, wish to learn portrait paintings from Oh. She advises on the importance of basic skills, realistic facial expression, composition and proportion to her pupils. Being a portrait artist may take years of training and technique. One must have a deep knowledge and understanding about balance, physique and muscle. With these elements as the foundation, Oh maximizes the vitality and personality of the person. In other words, technique, history of the person and creator’s feeling are the three main principles for Oh to create a good portrait painting. She wishes to be the No.1 portrait artist who realizes a great person’s holy soul rather than seeking a quick fame. Some say that people make history but the role of historians is as important as that. In this respect, Oh, as a portrait artist and as a man, will be a role model for many people today and the future.
