시간이란 이미 받은, 그리고 앞으로 받을 선물이자 인생에 찍는 방점
“캔버스 앞에서 가장 솔직하기에 더 이상 붓질이 필요하지 않을 때 그림이 완성된다”

시간과 계절변화는 자연이 인류에게 준 최초의 철학개념이고, 나이가 들수록 시간이 빨리 간다는 상대성 체감 이야기도 계절변화를 몸으로 느끼면서 얻게 된 인식이다. 교직에 종사하며 깊고 강렬한 표현주의 추상화를 30년 간 그려 온 화가 전옥희 작가는, 이러한 체감에 대해 남아있는 나날들이 살아온 나날보다 적을수록 시간과 세월이 자신에게 주어진 선물이라는 것을 깨닫게 된다고 설명한다. 지천명(知天命)과 이순(耳順) 사이에서, 점점 좁혀지는 계절과 시간이라는 공간 속 황혼을 열정으로 채색할 준비를 마친 전 작가를 만나본다. 

누구에게나 세월이 선물로 변하는 시기가 온다. 예술가에게도.
글을 배운 사람은 글씨로 자기표현을 하지만 화가는 그림을 자기표현의 기호로 사용한다는 기호론으로 대학원 시절 논문을 쓴 화가 전옥희 작가는, 고흐와 고갱도 이론으로 그림을 그리는 대신 관찰과 묵상으로 떠오른 발상으로 창의적 표현을 했다고 운을 뗐다. 지난 30여 년 간 시간과 삶의 접점을 강렬한 색채로 승화한 표현주의 화가, 대구 화단에서 평범한 소재도 유니크한 아이디어로 재구성하는 추상 연작 작가로 인정받고 있는 전 작가는 2년 전부터 시간이라는 형체 없는 선물의 철학적 단상을 캔버스에 옮기고 있다. 신조미술협회의 우수상을 받은 <세월은 흐르고..>와 비슷한 주제의 연작을 그릴 때, 전 작가에게 시간이란 지지부진하고 때로는 빨리 지나버려도 상관없는 개념이었다. 어머니, 아내, 며느리, 그리고 교사라는 임무에 치어 40대를 순식간에 보내고 난 후, 고단한 삶에 처음 쉼표를 찍게 된 50대 중반을 넘어선 전 작가는 문득 초등학교 때부터 시종일관 장래희망이던 ‘화가’라는 직함을 꿋꿋이 지켜 온 자신이 자랑스럽게 느껴졌다고 한다. 그리고 이해받지 못할 것이라는 두려움 대신 오랜 숙고를 응집시킨 표현일수록 미덕이 되는 예술가의 특권을 인정하고 자존감으로 승화시키게 되었다.

그리고 도슨트의 설명에 의지하는 관객에게도, 마음을 비울수록 작품 속 작가의 생각을 읽기 쉽다는 조언을 건넨다. 전 작가는 시간의 흐름에 조바심을 내지 않고 오히려 감사하며 황혼을 준비하다 보니, 같은 일을 겪어도 나이에 따라 다르게 받아들여지기에 소재는 더욱 무궁무진해졌다고 한다. 
그래서 세월과 기억을 주제로 한 <쉼터>, <혼란>, <축제> 등은 비슷한 톤이지만 그 중 어느 것도 똑같은 것이 없다. 무채색과 브라운 톤, 배경과 시공간의 공존으로 일상에 파묻힌 작가의 인생을 그린 세월 시리즈는, 그렇게 믹스드 미디어를 활용한 파격적 융합의 영역으로 들어간 <시간과 선물> 시리즈로 바뀌었다. 이 새 시리즈를 2015년 대구아트페스티벌 참가를 위한 테마로 시작한 전 작가는 이제 각진 화면 분할에 넣은 화려한 원색들을 경계도 영역도 불분명할 정도로 갈퀴다시피 하는 거친 비정형성 패턴형 화면분할로 끌어왔고, 이를 통해 시간을 받아들이는 작가의 심경 변화를 시각적으로 밝게 묘사한다. 

남아있는 시간을 개봉하기 전의 설렘도 예술가에게 주어진 선물
세월 시리즈를 그릴 때 전 작가는 일터인 교정에서 몇 시간이고 서서 같은 풍경을 바라보는 취미가 있었는데, 3월에 시작해서 2월에 마무리하는 10대 학생들의 1년을 수십 년 반복해 바라보는 동안 나이를 먹었지만 생각은 젊어졌다. 그리고 전 작가는 루앙대성당의 연작을 그리며 사계절을 관찰한 모네처럼, 고교 때부터 지금까지 같은 동네에 살면서 같은 계절과 사건을 반복한 일상에서 지나간 과거가 곧 다가올 미래가 된다는 시간의 순환을 깨달았다고 한다. 지루할 수도 있는 삶의 동굴에서 빠져나와 캔버스를 2개씩 붙여 한 쌍으로 그리기 시작한 것도, 그림을 일기장 개념으로 생각하고 털어놓다 얻게 된 ‘신이 주신 삶의 평균은 누구에게나 같다’는 작은 깨달음 덕분이었다. 그것은 큰 테두리 안에서 주변의 작은 부분으로 들어오는, 그래서 정면보다 측면에서 해답을 찾는 작가의 삶을 닮았다. 

지난 해 뉴욕에 갈 때도 화랑에 추천할 만큼 전 작가가 애착을 갖는 2007년 세월 시리즈 연작 중, 가는 세월을 자각하지 않고 누운 자화상은 그런 성향의 작품이다. 전 작가는 늘 수많은 이슈와 세상 경험을 꾸준히 접하며, 그러한 생각들을 마음속으로 정리하는 칩거를 거쳐 고도의 집중력을 발휘해 하나의 주제를 단숨에 그린다. 그 빠른 붓질로 더 이상 더할 것도 뺄 것도 없다고 생각하고 붓을 놓는 순간 그림은 완성된다. 이러한 유니크함 덕분인지, 아름다움을 의도적으로 비껴감에도 대구에서 수많은 교류전과 초대전이 개최될 때마다 전 작가는 초청 작가에 자주 이름을 올린다고 한다. 그림에 대한 자부심만큼 책임감을 지니기 위해 화가란 더 많은 경험과 예술가로의 소신을 가져야 한다고 강조하는 전 작가는 삶에서 시간이 ‘바쁨’에서 ‘여유’를 의미하게 된 요즘, 여행이나 조화로움 같은 새로운 테마에도 관심이 간다고 한다. 

93년 경 일본화가 니시오카와의 단체 교류전으로 일본 땅을 밟았을 때, 혼자 전봇대와 건물에 스티커를 붙여가며 낯선 곳을 개척하며 견문을 쌓았던 전 작가는 언젠가 5년 정도 시간을 내어 뉴욕을 찾아 뒷골목 예술가들과 어울려 그림을 그리는 것을 미래의 버킷리스트에 담았다. 컬러드로잉과 드리핑을 2차원 공간 안에 숨기고, 너무 서둘러 찾아온 삶의 눈보라도 붓 한 자루로 지휘해 온 전 작가. 언젠가 찾아올지 모를 새로운 예술 인생이 그곳에서는 어떤 주제로 전개될지 벌써부터 궁금해진다.

Time is a gift already given and will be given

Time and seasons are the first philosophical conception given to humanity and we cognize how faster time goes by as we grow older. Artist Jeon Ok-hee, who has painted, and also worked as a teacher for the last 30 years, says that she has less time to live than have lived, during which she realized that time is a gift already given and will be given. Shifting from the age in the 50s to the 60s, she now is ready to color her twilight years with passion. <Power Korea> met her.

The time when seasons become a gift comes to everybody
Jeon wrote her master’s thesis on semiotics that writers express themselves with words and artists with pictures, with Gogh and Gauguin, as example, who did the same with observation and contemplation. Jeon is an expressionism artist with her intense colors given to the borders of time and life. But she is better known in Daegu as an abstract series artist who can reorganize simple things into unique things. It has been 2 years now since she has moved her stray thoughts about time onto canvas. Jeon did not give much thought about time before but reaching the age to the mid 50 through various roles such as a mother, wife, daughter and teacher as well as being an artist, which has been her dream since a child, made her feel proud. She achieved her pride by keeping the privileges of being an artist with deeper thought and expression gained through time. The emptier the mind the easier to read her mind in her work, says Jeon. She does not feel anxious about time but rather thankful because as she gets older and her flexibility to take things have brought her limitless ideas to her works. <Rest Area>, <Chaos> and <Carnival> are, for example, themed in seasons and memories but have each unique style. The Seasons series themed in her daily life buried in achromatic and brown color combined with time and space, on the other hand, has been turned to the <Time and Gift> series which she boldly used mixed media and the works were displayed at the 2015 Daegu Art Festival. Jeon raked up the brilliant primary color into no borders and areas but atypical patterns which she poured her mood changes affected by time both visually and positively. 

The thrill, right before opening the time left for them, is a gift for artists 
For her Seasons series, she habitually watched the same landscape for hours at one spot during her dozens of teaching years at school. But she felt that her thoughts rather became younger while watching the landscapes. She also gained a realization that the past becomes the future by living her daily life where the seasons and events repeat themselves. She attached two canvases as one to express her understanding that a life is given to us all by god and she found life’s answers on the side rather than the front. Her self-portrait in a lying position (2007) is a good example of this and the painting was finished at a heat through intensive focus. For Jeon, a painting is completed when she thinks that there is nothing more to add or deduct. Thanks to this of her uniqueness, she has been a highly sought after artist for exhibitions held in Daegu. Jeon emphasizes on conviction and experience to secure pride and responsibility as an artist. When she participated in a group exchange exhibition in Japan with a Japanese artist Nisioka around 1993, she walked many streets to attach stickers on telegraphy poles and buildings. When asked about her future plan, she said that she wished to stay in New York for 5 years to create and to exchange with local artists. <Power Korea> is already curious to know about her new styles in New York.
