이원국발레단의 12월 가족발레, 한국 정서 도입한 <호두까기 인형> 선보여

체형과 실력, 재능과 노력 모두가 필요한 세계 발레 무대에서 활약한 이원국 수석무용수의 국립발레단 은퇴는, 이별이 아니라 ‘왕자 배역’ 발레리노 1세대가 발레 대중화의 새로운 역사를 개척하기 시작한 것을 의미했다. 2004년 창설되어 2009년 노원문화예술관 상주예술단체 자격을 얻고, 서울에서 한반도 남단의 작은 마을까지 발레를 열렬히 홍보하는 이원국발레단은 2016년의 대장정을 마무리하는 <호두까기 인형>을 준비 중이다. 발레의 정석과 창조성 사이에서 늘 탁월한 안정감으로 대중적인 발레행정의 귀감이 되는 이원국 단장을 만나보았다.

발레단의 3대 필수요소 창작, 공연실적, 레퍼토리 갖춘 소극장 발레단의 기적
지난 2014년 이원국발레단의 창립자, 이원국 단장의 자서전인 <이쇼라스(러시아어로 ‘다시 한 번’)>가 출간되었을 때, 이 단장이 최고의 발레리노에서 국내 최초의 클래식 및 창작발레 레퍼토리를 겸비한 소극장 발레단 단장으로 거듭난 여정은 많은 발레 팬들에게 감동을 주었다. 이 단장은 발레리노 교육체제가 잡히지 않았던 시절, 20세라는 늦은 나이로 입문한 지 1년 3개월 만에 KBS무용콩쿨 대상을 비롯해, 한국 무용수들의 등용문인 동아무용콩쿨, 모스크바 국제무용콩쿨 베스트 파트너상 등 화려한 이력으로 국내 2대 발레단인 국립발레단, 유니버설발레단 모두 주역을 맡은 한국 발레계의 큰 별이다. 세계적인 안무가 보리스 에이프만이 격찬했던 그의 타고난 감성, 테크닉이 2004년부터는 현역 무용수로서는 물론, 발레 교육과 발레단 행정가로서 빛을 발하고 있다. 이 단장은 국립발레단을 떠난 37세의 나이에, 이원국발레단을 창설하여 발레 창작과 공연의 모든 과정을 바닥부터 차근차근 섭렵해 나갔다. 이 단장은 늦게 시작했기에 그만큼 빨리 찾아온 은퇴 분위기가 안타까워 하루를 마치 한 달 같이 살았다. 그렇기에 이 단장은 스탭이 부족하여 공연 섭외, 홍보, 무대기획, 캐스팅, 스폰서 섭외까지 버거운 작업을 모두 소화하던 초창기, 순천에서 비오는 날 물기를 닦으며 열심히 급조한 무대에 올라 받은 관객들의 박수갈채를 아직도 잊을 수 없다고 한다. 또 이 단장은 182cm의 장신과 빼어난 외모로 주목받은 이면에는, 카브리올, 주떼를 비롯한 여러 발레 동작을 완벽하게 해내기 위해 수천 켤레의 가죽 발레슈즈가 찢어지고 6개월 간 뼈 속까지 파고드는 고통을 진통제만으로 견딘 노력이 숨어 있었다고 전한다. 발레리노들은 남자가 발레를 한다는 선입견 뿐 아니라 발레리나를 리프트하는 장면도 소화해야 하기에, 그는 어머니의 조언으로 발레에 입문할 때 보디빌딩으로 만든 근력이 상당히 유리했으며 지금도 21세에 입문한 남성 단원을 철저히 훈련시켜 27세의 나이에 정식 단원으로 활동하게 만드는 저력을 보이기도 했다. 아울러 이 단장은 클래식발레에 대한 관심을 안무가, 작품까지 넓혀가는 발레 팬들을 위해서 수많은 창작 발레를 제작했다. 창작산실 프로젝트로 지원받아 큰 성공을 거둔 <맥베드>, 러시아가 20세기 초 중국풍으로 번안한 작품을 한국의 원작 그대로 재창작한 <춘향>, 드라마티컬 발레의 한국식 접근인 <여명의 눈동자>, 시벨리우스 탄생 150주년 기념 창작발레 <펠레아스와 멜리장드>등 이원국발레단은 그간 소규모 발레단으로서 불가능에 가까운 작업을 연달아 성사시킨 것이다.

예술의 깊이와 우리 문화 접목한 <호두까기 인형>으로 어린이들의 발레입문 도울 것
2008년 3월부터 시작한 소극장 <월요발레 이야기> 프로젝트는 이 단장에게 2000년 문광부선정 ‘오늘의 젊은 예술가상’을 안겨 주고, 민간발레단이 추구해야 할 가치를 상기시킨 이 단장의 업적 중 하나다. 이렇게 한층 강해진 생활발레인구에 보답하기 위해, 그는 어린 무용수들의 프로 입문을 돕고 발레애호가들의 참가를 독려하는 <이원국발레콩쿨>을 올해까지 2회 째 개최하여 대중 발레 저변을 확대하고 있다. 이러한 일정을 뒷받침해주는 이가 바로 그의 아내이자 같은 국립발레단의 스타무용수 출신, 이원국발레단의 부설 KBEC 발레아카데미 이영진 원장이다. 6세 때부터 발레를 전공한 이 원장은 엘리트 발레 및 조기교육의 노하우를 적용해 이원국발레단의 미래 인재 발굴 및, 해외 유명콩쿨의 우승을 석권하는 10대 스타 발레무용수들을 양성하며 이 단장의 측면 날개 역할을 하고 있다. 이 단장은 2009년 노원문화예술관의 상주예술단체로 선정되어 서울과 수도권 관객들을 위해 정기공연을 하는 한편, 농협과 협력하여 한반도 최남단 소외된 지역에도 발레를 소개한다. 그래서 100명 내외 인구의 남해 인근 마을에서 ‘명예이장’으로 위촉되기도 한 이 단장은 이러한 문화마을 만들기 일환으로 어르신들에게 생애 최초로 발레를 보여드리는 사업에서도 보람을 느낀다고 전한다. 이렇듯 무대에 오르는 쾌감은 큰 시험에 합격하는 것처럼 크다는 이 단장은, 자라나는 어린이들에게 발레를 알리는 데도 열성적이다. 12월 10일부터 31일까지 각각 성수아트홀, 국립김해박물관, 노원문화예술회관에서 개최되는 이원국발레단의 <호두까기 인형>은 프티파 안무를 기준으로, 출연진이 우리 정서에 맞는 마술을 보이고, 태권도를 활용한 안무와 소품을 소개해 한국 어린이들에게 쉽게 다가갈 수 있도록 해석했다. 마지막으로 이 단장은 장차 한국을 대표하는 민간발레단이 될 것이며, 80여 년 역사를 가진 우리 발레의 세계화를 이루고 세계무대에서 인정받는 작품을 보유한 발레단으로 성장하겠다는 포부를 보였다.

A little theatre ballet company boasts power of creation,
repertoire and performance 
Lee founded Leewonkook Ballet in 2004. When he released an autobiography <Еще раз; Ishoras ‘one more time’ in Russian> in 2014, many readers were touched by the story of his new life as a creative director of a little theatre ballet company from one of the top ballerinos. Lee started ballet at the age of 20 but won the grand prize at the KBS Dance Concours within 1 year and 3 months followed by winning the Donga Dance Concours, which is the Korean gateway to be a professional dancer, and the best partner prize at the Moscow International Dance Concours. He also took leading roles when in Korean National Ballet and Universal Ballet. The world class choreographer Boris Eifman once praised highly of Lee’s sensitivity and technique. Since 2004, however, he started to equally share his passion in education and running a little ballet company as an administrator. He left Korean National Ballet at the age of 37 to found his own ballet company in that year. He had to face many difficulties due to lack of experience in running a business at first. He did everything by himself from planning and casting to stage and PR. The performance on one rainy day during this period, however, has remained unforgettable as the company received an explosive applause from the audience on the day. His tall (182cm) and handsome appearance might attract people’s eye first but he had to have thousands of shoes torn apart and stand the pain of his foot with painkiller. His muscle, made through bodybuilding, was of a big help anyway to digest high level of difficult movements and holdings. He once trained a 21 year old ballerino to be accepted as a regular member at the age of 27 and has introduced many creative ballets. Some of the successful works, supported by the Changjaksansil Project, include <Macbeth>, <Chunhyang> the Russian version on Chinese style, <Eyes of Dawn> and <Pelléas et Mélisande> made for the 150th anniversary of Sibelius.

Lee started a little theatre project <Monday Ballet Story> from March 2008 and it brought him the ‘Today’s Young Artists Award’ from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2000 for demonstrating a role model project for many private ballet companies. Encouraged by this, Lee introduced <Lee Won Kook Balle Concours> 2 years ago in order to foster talented children ballerinos and ballerinas with the support of his colleague ballerina wife Lee Young-jin who is also from Korean National Ballet and now CEO of KBEC Ballet Academy, an affiliate of Leewonkook Ballet. Lee (wife) started ballet when she was 6 and her years of experience and knowhow in the field have made some of her teenage students sweep prizes at numerous prestigious international dance concours. In 2009, Leewonkook Ballet was appointed as the permanent art organization of Nowon Culture and Art Center and Lee has organized regular performances as well as itinerant ones for people in remote areas. In recognition of his social contribution, Lee was appointed as an honorary head of a village in Namhae County and he feels so proud of it. <The Nutcracker> held in Sungsu Art Hall, Gimhae National Museum and Nowon Culture and Art Center from December 10 to 30 will provide children a variety of fun from ballet and magic to Taekwondo so that they become more familiar with ballet. When asked about his future plan, Lee said that he would grow Leewonkook Ballet to be the best private ballet company in Korea and to create more quality Korean ballets that can be recognized in the global stage. <Power Korea> wishes the Lee couple a prosperous 2017.
