Chairman Gwon Ki-sun of Korea Kookhak Kigong Association
Kookhak Kigong gives you sound body and mind
Successful opening of The 4th Kookhak Kigong National Competition
of Sports for All

The importance of keeping sound body and mind for work and stress loaded busy modern people is ever increasing. Not everybody can afford regular exercise at a fitness club or climbing a mountain for fresh air. Thus, introducing this month is The Korea Kookhak Kigong Association. It recently held The 4th Kookhak Kigong National Competition of Sport for All on 1-2 October at EXCO, Daegu. Koopkhak Kigong is a Korean Sport for All designed based on ‘Sundo’, a traditional Korean body and mind training. <Power Korea> met newly inaugurated chairman Gwon Ki-sun of the Korea Kookhak Kigong Association and heard about the vision and prospects of the association.

From 1980 to today
Kookhak Kigong was introduced by Lee Seung-hun (aka Ilji) in 1980 at Chunghyuntop Park in Anyang City as a body and mind training. It corrects the flow of energy and blood and cultivates sound body and mind. About 1 million people are currently practicing Kookhak Kigong in the local and global clubs. The Korea Kookhak Kigong Association registered to the Korea Council of Sport for All in 1999 and was upgraded to a regular membership organization in 2004. The association received ministerial prize from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as an excellent Sport for All organization in 2014 and became a regular membership organization of the Korea Sport Olympic Committee last February. The methods of Kookhak Kigong include energy training (kigong), energy exercise, breathing and contemplation, and navel healing. Kigong is known to come from China but the root can be found from ‘Sundo’, a traditional Korean body and mind training. The young Sundo trainees were called ‘Kookjarang’ and the leaders ‘Chunjihwarang’ in the Gojoseon Kingdom era and the name Sundo kept passing down as ‘Chosonsunin’ in the Goguryeo Kingdom, ‘Munmudo’ in the Baekje Kingdom and ‘Wharandgo’ in the Silla Kingdom. Everybody can do Kookhak Kigong at anywhere anytime and more and more people from the world are finding a great mental and physical pleasure in doing Kookhak Kigong.

“Kookhak Kigong, Gwon explains, is a body and mind training through which the trainees realize the law of the universe as the way to make all living things good and beneficial like ‘Humanitarianism’, the founding principle of Gojoseon Kingdom.”

Spreading Kookhak Kigong to the world
The Korea Kookhak Kigong Association has 230,000 members from 2,800 regional clubs. The newly inaugurated last August, the chairman Gwon first stepped his foot in the society as a police officer in 1988 and served as the chief of Gyeongbuk Police Agency and Busan Police Agency. He came to know about Kookhak Kigong when his health started to deteriorate due to overwork.

“I was suffered from choric fatigue during my police officer career. I thought I need to find a way to get back my health and one day in 1990 happened to read a Kookhak Kigong brochure. I launched exercise straight away and recovered my mental and physical health after 3 months” adding that “Although I offered a place in university and political world after 30 years of my service as a public servant, my heart told me to spread Kookhak Kigong to more people with stressed mind and fatigued body. That’s why I’m serving as the new chairman of the Korea Kookhak Kigong Association.”

The 4th Kookhak Kigong National Competition of Sport for All held on 1-2 October at EXCO, Daegu attracted 5,000 competitors; 4,000 domestic and 1,000 overseas.

“Popularizing Kookhak Kigong, said Gwon in his congratulatory speech, will bring sound body and mind to the people not only in Korea but in the world and we will do our best to achieve this”, which followed by Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin, “The spirit of Kookhak Kigong coincides with ‘Humanitarianism’, the founding principle of Gojoseon Kingdom, and also the Daegu citizens’ wants to be healthy. I wish the Korea Kookhak Kigong Association a tremendous success.”

Meanwhile, singer Kim Yu-na and students of Benjamin School for Character Education gave a performance called ‘Stand Up’, Fenliudo Art Company the drum performance and the association’s Gyeonggi Provincial team the Ki (energy) performance in the opening ceremony. 5,000 people responded with a round of applause and thunderous shouts to each performance. Introducing Ilji Healing Life / Singing a MOU with KSCA
With the accumulated research results of Kookhak Kigong, Gwon recently developed ‘Ilji Healing Life. The Ilji is the nickname of the founder of Kookhak Kigong Lee Sueng-hun. It is an acupressure device that has three directional bong (pole); Chungbong, Jibong and Inbong. It promotes sound body and mind and helps improve digestion, circulation and immunity.

“Many people today suffer from digestive trouble due to stress, instant food and drinking. And using Ilji Healing Life on a regular basis will not only improve the symptoms but also make breathing easy and brain clear.”

Ilji Healing Life is good for everybody but more effective for people with indigestion, poor blood circulation and constipation. You can just sit or lie down to do it for three to five minutes to feel its effect. Meanwhile, The Korea Kookhak Kigong Association singed a MOU on 28 October with the Korean Senior Citizens Association to promote the health of elderly people with less movement of Kookhak Kigong.

“Korea today might not be as it is without the sacrifice and devotion of what we call today ‘elderly people’ through the 60s to 70s. We value their effort and spirit very high and would like to show our gratitude with Kookhak Kigong.”

The association also launched last June ‘Naval Healing Service Corp’ in cooperation with NGO organizations to promote naval healing method and the Corp pays a weekly visit to local governments in Daejeon and Cheonan.

Spreading Sport for All / Systematizing Kookhak Kigong
Gwon sees the integration of Sport for All and Elite Sports as an opportunity to promote public health.

“Cooperation between Sport for All and Elite Sports will foster more talented elite sportsmen. The activation of Sport for All also promotes public health, local community activities and national solidarity.”

As communication is one of the keywords of the association, Gwon is planning to closely work together with more cultural organizations while preparing for systematization of Kookhak Kigong through National Kookhak Kigong Training Center (tentative) and Graduate School of Kookhak Kigong (tentative).

<Power Korea> wishes the Korea Kookhak Kigong Association yet another great success next year.
