The pioneer of the Korean PET bottles industry
Chairman Han Gyu-Bum of Hanil Placon

Thanks to the high durability and portability, PET bottles are widely used as containers to put something in. It is estimated to be produced 6 million tons a year globally. Introducing this month, Hanil Placon was the first company that introduced PET bottles to Korea and CEO Han Gyu-Bum is sometimes called as the God Father of the Korean PET bottles industry. <Power Korea> met Han.

A success comes from passion and tenacity
PET (Polyethylene terephthalate; a plastic resin and a form of polyester) was first developed by an American company Du-pont in 1976. It is mixed with less dye and foreign substance and has strong durability, thermal resistance and regenerative power. It also is light and recyclable. CEO Han not only is the one who first introduced PET bottles to Korea but also is the one who developed world’s first PET container for cooking oil in 1979 despite the issues on unit price and facilities that made it hard to be commercialized around that time. Han stepped his foot in the industry in 1961 by taking over the plastic lid manufacturing company run by his relatives. He started to supply the lids to renowned pharmaceutical firms in Korea and expanded the manufacturing scope to cosmetics containers, during which he came to know about a cooking oil factory being built on a harbor of Incheon in 1979. He made a journey to the factory to persuade the owner to use his PET containers but he found out that the factory almost finished installing PE (polyethylene) product line. Undaunted by this, Han explained the PET bottles’ excellent transparency, lightness and practicality that can surely make the bottles stand out in the market. Han’s persistent persuasion eventually brought an OK sign from the management and the bottles hit the market, as Han predicted, as housewives got surprised that they could see the contents in the bottles with their eyes. This also brought a huge success to the cooking oil company and it even took over its rival company at the end.

PET has brought innovation to our daily lives
The success of PET in the form of cooking oil bottle in Korea was the very point that sparkled the boom of PET bottles in the 80s Korea. The first follower was a PET water bottle which has become absolutely common today. Its recycling effect also brought low production cost when compared to glass bottles which were heavy and must be produced in quantity. The sodium hydroxide used for cleaning the glass bottle also caused water pollution as it directly flows to rivers without the process of decomposition.

“People at first were rather negative about PET bottles due to the difficulty in recycling. So I gathered materials and cases home and abroad and demonstrated the innovation and benefits it could bring to our lives” looked back Han.

Han formed the Korea PET Containers Association with 32 related companies in 1992 on the order of the Ministry of Environment and served as the president for 10 years during which he introduced a facility that can recycle 8,000 tons of used PET bottles a year. He also solved the pressure issue of the bottles by developing a device that makes a hole on the bottles.

Contributing to economic development
Han has walked a single path with passion and conviction for the last 50 years.

“We get an accident if we close our eyes even for 5 seconds when driving a car. We have to focus and see the direction we are heading. The same applies to business. Honest, principle, passion and conviction, I think, are the four core elements to make a success. I feel proud that I took part in contributing to Korea’s economic development despite I had to get through many hardships. On the occasion of having an interview with <Power Korea>, I particularly show my gratitude to my staff and employees who made it happen through closely working together.”

Currently, Hanil Placon is developing new PET bottles and containers that can satisfy both practicality and aesthetic value as well as eco-friendliness. A company is like a tree. And the tree is part of environment as a whole and they affect each other. <Power Korea> hopes that Hanil Placon will keep playing its role to make a better living environment in Korea and in the world.
